    That Cat must have had a rough 5000 hours. We have a 1972 D8H with 23000 hours since the last overhaul and it has very little blowby, and you certainly won't see it on camera coming out the radiator. People laugh at us because we change our oil every 100 hours but it sure has paid off.

    That camera angle with the dozer passing over was boss. Great stuff.

    Fine old tractor. We used to have 4 of them with V-blades. Thanks for sharing.

    That's a damn good looking D8K, y'all need to put the side doors back on it. It sure would look better

    That cloud is dust being picked up off the grade due to the engine fan in pusher mode, if it was on pull mode the operator would be dusted right out of the seat as well as cooked from engine heat on a hot summer day.

    That is a very clean and straight tractor. Seems to run quite well, even with the blowby going on there. Maybe the owner will feel frisky one winter and freshen that motor up. While he's at it he should probably check out the finals. They're a bit overmatched on these machines due to the increasing horsepower from the H series to the later K series. Looks as if the owner must baby this machine anyway. Good idea. Just look at the results! Great vid.

      localcrew, With maintenance, we get great life out of the final drives on a D8K. We use 80W90 gear oil and change it every 1000 hours and we add 2 litres of STP to them. What the STP does is make the oil to stick the gears and using it triples the life of the final drives. I never found there to be any difference in the life of the finals of the D8Ks from the D8Hs.

    Ya it looks like there is more smoke coming out the road draft tube than there is out the exhaust stack.
    So you going to add one of those to your fleet of toys

    I guess he doesn't back drag with this machine because there is no paint wear behind the blade.

    That Cat sure didn't make someone money if those hours are original.

    Have to love the sound of old Cat iron, despite the little blow by you mentioned she looks like one clean, straight tractor. In HS I ran a D6C that had the blade tilt on a split pedal on the far left, how's the twin tilt work on that particular dozer?

    • @tyfrank3427
      @tyfrank3427 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      2009deerejohn, the tilts on the D8Ks works off the dozer lever and they are a joystick. It moves back and forward to lift and lower the dozer and side to side to tilt it. The D6C was the last machine to use the foot pedals for tilts. On the D7Es and D8Hs the joystick was used on the last of the low horse already. The D6Ds use the joystick but have a similar hydraulic tank and valves as the D6Cs

    • @tyfrank3427

      Are you referring to the blowby? Blowby occurs when the piston rings no longer seal properly against the liners. Some engines have blowby from new. The Cat 3200 series engines are bad for that because they only have one compression ring on each piston. D8Ks normally don't have much, especially after 5000 hours. Shutting the engines off hot is one thing that will accelerate the time they will get blowby. In fact, that is my guess what happened on this machine. If the engine was dusted, it will also do that.

  • @skadill

    engine blowby

    • @loyross3466
      @loyross3466 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      it looks like a good running dozer with maybe no blow by. the pusher fan will blow the dirt off a small blade like this.

    • @tyfrank3427
      @tyfrank3427 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      loy ross, I am sure it is blow by. they run good even if they do that. What causes blow by most of the time is operators shutting them off hot and it cooks the rings. We have a 1979 D8K that has blow by like that but runs that nice. But we have 3 other D8Ks and 3 D8Hs with very little or no blow by. The D-3s and D-4s with the 3204 engines are bad for blow by because they only have one compression ring on their pistons.
