Sometimes a person needs to be careful when they are criticizing and condemning someone. This Rupert guy has no clue that he is; in actuality; describing himself: Ugly, charmless, characterless; a Clunker."
Paul, you have touched my heart. Thank you for sharing your beautiful voice with the world.

Paul Pots has a beautiful voice. I am a voice teacher and I'm saying that, that is a beautiful voice. He might not be singing full opera's but those snobs feel insecure because this man has natural talent and he didn't go throught their hands they don't own a bit of him.

YES, Paul...we do love what you enjoy doing...please, turn a deaf ear to the ones that don't, let them continue with the with whom-evers; we think you have the "corner" on this market, one that's based on one who truly loves to sing just for the joy in singing, steeled with just the right amount of humility. We are so appreciative that you had the guts to step out on that stage years ago and you didn't run off...we love you here in the US...thanks so much!

Paul Potts is Britains Got Talent’s Aladdin. He may not be Povoratti but he has brought a mellow, masses reaching version of opera that the average person can love and appreciate. Even now, after all these years he gives me goosebumps when I hear him sing Nessus Dorma. We all love him no matter what the critics say. I never listen to their opinions anyway, be it music or movies.. I judge for myself and I love Paul!!!

Rupert Christiansen's soul pours out misery... as he evaluates from deep within his darkness an art which requires purity, humbleness and love. An Art which embraces the listener with a melody which naturally touches and heals hearts in need of Honesty. A virtue made of an ingredient known as "real" not falsely fabricated by structure which pretends to patent an art bestowed to certain people by God. The world fell in Love with Paul and Susan just like England did. They make the world a better place to live in, God's world seeks this touch, and when they see it they fall for it hook, line and sinker. Oh yeah..this makes sense and that's, that.

  • @cybeara215

To Rupert Christiansen, yes, he is not an opera singer (Of course, he sold phone...). He is more than a opera singer ! You can judge his performance. But whatever, we love his song, his passion and voice ! By the way, he won the competition of Britain got talent not "Opera got talent" at all.

Mar 30, 2019 ~ Like Paul Potts I'm an ordinary man and not a kid any more. What the snobbish Critic doesn't appear to understand is a nobody can go from the coal mines to the top! It takes a gift of God to grant that voice and then the fortitude to do what this ordinary man did. // Well I'm not an opera Fan, because most is sung in a foreign tongue. I didn't say I don't like the sound. You see, I do. ;o) Also: I love it when the crowd is assuming your a loser and all of a sudden "Quasar" A star is burning bright, clean and shiny. Paul Potts, My hat off to you.

In hind-sight, Paul proved them all wrong.
Rejected and maligned by the opera community for years, he instead gave his voice to the world, and was rewarded with the Echo Award for the International Artiist for 2009. A Very sweet victory, indeed

These opera critics who are critical of Potts reminds me of the old-school country singers who say todays country music isn't "Country". Paul has brought in a new crop of opera listeners that would have never given opera a second thought, much like the Carrie Underwood's and Brad Paisely's of the new country world. Thank God for them because I would have never listened to the "old-school" country if that's all there was today. Paul has done the same thing for opera. Congrats you deserve it Paul.

I remember teenagers in Germany being enthusiastic about him. Yes, maybe there are better opera singers in the world. But if they don´t reach the masses but only a very exclusive audience and Paul Potts managed to reach the masses and introduced opera songs to them, he did the better Job. I don´t care wether his voice or singing abilities are good enough for the opera critics….I like it. And I like that he got all kind of people being more interested in opera songs.

I went to an Opera while working in Europe. The stage, the orchestra, the set and music was wonderful. It was at intermission when you really see what opera is all about. It certainly was an eye opener for this Rock & Roll only person, me. It was during the intermission that I got a look at the real meaning of opera. The people attending the performance ruined the whole evening. Every person thought they were better in some way or another. I think these people contribute large amounts of money so they can be seen and be important. I was so sad that I didn’t go back into the theater.

Yes...although racked with fear and self doubt, he tapped into lionhearted courage and found his way past the socially generated obstacles of disapproval.
He shows us what we can all do and be if we conquer our fears.
That's what brings so much power to his performance.

They really don't know what it is that music and song has to bring to the audience.

I can only assume that Rupert Christiansen feels this way because he thinks only "Blue Blood" and "High Brow" are the only ones that know opera. I do not know opera, but I know what sounds good. Ruppy more than likely has his bloomers wadded up because a "nobody" has brought opera to the common people. Opera is no longer in Ruppy's personal world. Maybe it's also because Paul Potts has more money and fame and the only thing Ruppy can hold on to now is his "refinement". The Queen seemed to like Paul, guess Ruppy needs to go educate her on opera too. Bad form, Ruppy, bad form.

Kind of makes me wonder who are the REAL critics are when it comes to movies or music or even sports for that matter. Is it the little beady eyed pencil pushers who themselves probably couldn't start SING opera? Or is it the people who go to these shows and events or buy the cds or dvds... who are moved to tears (as in Paul's case) that really, truly enjoy themselves. I think the answer is the latter. Paul moved me to tears when I saw his first audition. He has a wonderful gift. It was, as Simon said, "a breath of fresh air". Bravo Paul!!!!

He is doing nothing more than sharing his form of EXCELLENCE! People confuse excellence with perfection and discipline with punishment.... they are NOT THE SAME THING.

How can you not be a fan! This man was born a supertalent!!! Al those so called snobby "wonderkids" with there high education who have been "learned" to listen to opera just can't stand the fact that someone is born with a good voice without having to have learned for it should just shut up.

I am sorry I am really late but I have only just watched this series of recordings. I like opera, I read the Telegraph (at least until now) and I hear a man who is so far removed from reality of life that I am sad. Paul Potts hold your head up high for everything you have achieved you could sing in La Scala - I have been there and would be hon oured to listen to you. Ignore the comments recorded by a sad few on this clip and go out and make us happy.

Wow the Daily telegraph fools, goes the PERSONAL attack on Paul Potts, rather than technical opera analysis. And even their 'analysis' of Pott's singing is totally subjective according to their narrow own taste, subjective opinion only. And they don't like how Potts looks? God look themselves yourself. Which shows the truth that the daily telegraph fools are just jealous that somebody outside their little world is doing so well.
And the Daily telegraph fools are 100% WRONG people like Paul Potts and Amira DO bring people into the Opera world for a while. What a sad people these critics are.

The Rupert Christiansens of the world show an isolationist mentality that's part of an exclusionary mindset that would be best left behind.
It's sad that he drives people who would otherwise be open to learning about opera far away into another direction.
Who wants to associate with such closed mindedness?
Paul Potts has a tender sweet appeal in his voice that reaches the heart in a way that brings people together and that counts for something.
Too bad Christiansen can't feel that.

Opera is a play put to music. Singing is beauty in sound put to words.
