Is Pax Dei an MMO???

- One of the more common criticisms of Pax Dei is that it is not a TRUE MMO. In the current Alpha state, that could be a reasonable argument. But long term, I don't think that is the case at all. I get into all the details of that in this video.

This is a very good video with a lot of valid points.
Thanks brother!
Sandbox mmos are my jam. So looking forward to this.
Archeage early on Servers could handle WAY over 1K players, only when player counts went downhill AA servers downgraded their servers to lower limits.
MMO = Massive Multiplayer Online. So you got a single player version? Or your version is not online and only on your computer? Great video covering a non-issue.
Yup, thanks
Jesus man, Shadowbane was a name i hadn't even heard or thought about for almost 2 decades ROFL. :)
Pax Dei is coming along great and seems great. I think, as you said, you checked the internet, lol. If the only complaint is "it isn't an MMO" when it will have thousands of players per server... well, yeah, haha. In the end all that matters is "is the game engaging, varied and enjoyable/satisfying" (I include satisfying because MMOs/survival are more about satisfaction than short-term fun like FPS/battle-royals/etc., with the occasional combat/PvP/fun). Anyway, nice summary of past games, the evolution of online games/etc.. Especially liked the ancient Shadowbane short video, haha. (I'll add that the planning/[prep for combat is what can/does make MMO combat epic, as opposed to the 'jump in' PvP of shooters (though when well designed those can have epic combat as well))
Not a single sane person has claimed this isn't an MMO, the problem is people are advertising this as an RPG. It's an MMO Survival game, like ARK. It is not an MMORPG. Now, there are certainly a lot of people that only think of RPGs when they think of MMOs but that's well besides the point. Many content creators have referred to this game as an RPG and I hate to break it to you, a survival game with stats does not equal an RPG.
It is definitely not an MMORPG yet. But, it potentially could be once combat stats are in. Once you have combat stats in, certain gear will not work in terms of giving you the skills attached to it. Once that is in, you can play a role such as tank, and there is progression tied to it. Similar systems were in previous Sandbox MMOs that many also called MMORPGs. Albion, MO, EVE, Shadowbane, Darkfall, etc. Many of those are labeled MMORPG. If those can be, so can this one, IMO.
@@RyveGenesis
Not really. Pax Dei is a Survival Game that will add some RPG elements, but it is not really trying to be an RPG.
There’s considerably more to being an RPG than just having combat roles than can be classified as Tank/Healing/DPS.
Definitely a Sandbox MMO. Yes.
lets not overcomplicate things. Is it massive multiplayer and online? it is an MMO
The ONLY relevant question whether a game is a MMO is the NUMBER OF PLAYERS that share one world!!
What most people are talking about, then they use MMO is saying MMORPG, without knowing what MMO is actually the acronym of!
They all think of the classical RPG-formular and say that a lack of those disqualifies a game to be a MMO.
If it is a settlement, survival game with hundreds or thousand players on ONE server with a persistent world, then it is an MMO-Survival/Settlement Game.
Even a realtime wargame logistic game like Foxhole has more speaking for it to be an MMO (without any skill system).
5:05 now we are talking.
So phasing begins at 150 players... not very high atm.
But you answered my most intriguing question about Pax Dei!
It’s not just “the UI” - the crafting system/mechanics are designed like a Survival Game. That is the foundation of Pax Dei.
Also, NPCs are a key, foundational aspect of RPGs. So, the lack of NPCs pulls Pax Dei farther away from the RPG genre.
If you leave character character creator and have to gather materials to craft a stone ax and a stone pick-axe - as well as pants - that’s the foundation of a Survival Game; not an RPG.
In an RPG, you’re going to leave the character creator with rudimentary weapons, armor and gear.
Most likely those will be relevant to your Class and Race. Class and Race help provide you with a background for playacting you character’s personality as well as their combat role.
Pax Dei having no Classes and only Humans as a Player Race moves the game farther from an RPG and helps cement its foundation as a Survival Game.
It may be that Pax Dei ends up being some other genre of MMO we haven’t seen before.
But, its foundation is a Survival Game - and will add some RPG elements.
Those are some good points. While the starting experience is very similar to Survival Games, there still remains many similarities to Sandbox MMO's in the past. So yeah, this one is more Survival than say MO, Wurm, or Albion. But it still has many of the same characteristics of them
Archeage is not only a mmo with PVP , Wars and Dungeons galore
Yup
Domo arigato, Ryve-sama!
Ultima Online had a skill based, not class based, system. And a free world base building (in reference to your home).
True, and good point
I’m a Pax East type of guy
Pax ERP for me
The copium surrounding this game is astonishing.
It's got potential. It's got a long ways to go still to get there
@@RyveGenesis It does, but not for the people they're marketing it towards. Not to be rude.
No quests, no vendors, no dungeons, no world bosses, or events, or raids. Just an enormous map on a persistent world that will never wipe. Open pvp outside of the starting area means new players will instantly get ganked by veterans who have months of play time on them.
Eight months it will be full of claimed lands and deserted castles and outposts. And you'll have to travel hundreds of miles to find a patch of grass to build a tiny farm on.
There's nothing new here that sets them apart from other games like this except their player count and gigantic (empty) map.
@@MakoRuu Quests after planned, just not delivered by NPCs, they are fine on Notes in the world. Dungeons and Raids already exist, more on the way
An enormous map with nothing, and they don't want PVP to be a thing.... make that make sense to me... what the heck will you do? no PVP no PVE except for farming???
@@MakoRuu
Omg I can't believe you called out Shadowbane... that is my all time favorite MMO. Nothing compares to it. When you mentioned it I nearly spit out my coffee.
Lol. I wish I had played more of it
You start a game without shoes or pants, it's a survival game 😂 but it can be both not an issue.
An MMO wasn't a thing until it was either
EVE is in space lol special case for sure
Another great video, I agree that even with my jokes that it's mad early to judge what it is or isn't
Agreed brother!
Pax Dei will be an MMO-Light (or MMO-Lite) game. It's not being developed to stand beside the likes of WoW, FF, ESO, etc, but more focused on small communities. Keep in mind, this is being developed by ex CCP Devs, the creators of Eve Online, and literally nobody knows how to make MASSIVE Multiplayer (as in how many people can be in one location simultaneously) than they do. Eve holds the record for the highest Player count on grid at once. Granted that's at
It's developed to stand beside Sandbox MMO'S not Themeparks
Its not made by any ex CCP Devs of note... just some kids that worked there and got fired. Pax Dei is going to be an expensive Life is Feudal development... they already stated game-breaking issues that will make a majority of palyers not play it... yall being roped into another Starfield over-hype.... by Asmongold of all people lol.... dude hasn't hyped any game of note ever.
If they do not change + improve, game will nvr be an mmo.. using just a term to make it popular will just kill it faster.
Disagree
I would say it's an MMOSG. Massive Multiplayer Online Survival Game. :)
Fair enough
i dosent loook like a mmo more like a survival
Looks like a Sandbox MMO
it's some kind of conan exiles
Way bigger than that
Pax Dei is definitely an MMO, but so far what I have seen is not very impressive at all. Almost everything that makes it look good is due to the UE5 engine it is using but what I have seen of combat sucks ass and this game looks more in line with the direction Pantheon has taken...ugh...I guess if you are an old style MMORPGer who hasn't come out of that shell, maybe you'd be excited? I mean it is in Alpha but at least show one of the MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS of a MMORPG, which is combat in a completed state. I'm sorry but if the combat that Pax Dei has IS in a completed state, this mmorpgs will flop hard. But, we shall see.
They have stated, the combat is placeholder. It is next up to get worked on. Game has been in development 3 years. The only system with polish is Building. The rest needs work still. It takes time.
Clueless
@@RyveGenesis And I would counter that if you are going to hold an ALPHA or BETA or show something to the public, than it should be what makes the community excited for more. What they have shown is not exciting at all. My opinion, but there it is. I mean at least AOC was smart enough to know this before they had a public test.
Well, the first public test for AOC was nothing really special either. This is the trouble with open development. @@ADesertVoice
They said that the map would be 6 hours to cross. Since its 2 hours to cross current size- its not feasible to jsut say "Oh map size x 3" because we are talking in square kilometers the assumption is that its both increasing insize in all directions increasing to 6 hours. This means, that we're likely going to be experiencing a game that is 2500 square kilometers give or take.
I could see it
