    I do think this is the worlds best splitting video! Great work. I hope the guys from Eastonmade take note of the issue with the handle, it’s not even a year old so pivotal parts like the handle shouldn’t be breaking. That’s a design flaw. Nice fix on your part though, keep the videos coming.

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a very easy/cheap fix and Andrew is well aware of it the part I think is not of his design or manufacturing but probably from the valve manufacturer. I do abuse/use it a lot more than the average person, I think I am up to 8-9 or so truckloads split with it now.

    Hi Chris - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. Heres my tuppence worth, as they say over here. Perhaps you are the main reason for the lever breaking if you apply excessive force to operate it. Teach yourself to be more gentle. I surprised myself by fracturing my lever doing 150 cords a year, which I repaired with a simple weld. When I analysed the issue I had to admit that I maintained far too much force on the lever, subconsciously thinking that the more I pressed, the better the machine would operate. When I trained myself to merely activate the lever I never encountered another problem - and I found my hand didn't ache!

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you might be right! I had a few experts tell me it was the detent slap that caused the stress break in the bold?!? Maybe it is both? Thanks Mr. Big!

      @@InTheWoodyard Rodders again. Well, I'm certainly no hydraulics expert, just a simple West of Ireland log splitting guy! Stick with the soft threaded bar, make up a spare one for your tool box so it's no big issue if you have to replace it once in the blue moon.

    Chris get a grade 8 bolt and it will hold up a lot better. Grade 5 won't hold up. Used to have same problem with the boom control levers in yard trucks that the company I worked for had.

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is 1- I could not find one the right size and 2- would that cause the valve to then become the weak link and break instead of the handle????

    • @davidcole2685
      @davidcole2685 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@InTheWoodyard The issue is the bolt or stud being to weak to last under hard usage (constant rate of shocks/back and forth). Valve is built to last under this use. You could also contact Easton and find out if this was designed to fail as a safety feature to extend the valves life. May offer them your services as a test/quality control option for their product in a real world harsh operating condition usage. Just a thought. Thank you for all of the useful info!

    Great idea for the fix! I was just thinking about how many times that lever has gone back and forth since you got your splitter. You sure go through the wood! If you're anything like me it's more liable to be a slap than a gentle push too! It's a testament to Eastonmade's use of quality components that it was just the handle and not the valve that failed! Chris do have second thoughts about wishing you got a bigger splitter? Like a 9 or 12-22 with 4-6 way or box? I often wonder if it would be better or worse seeing you have a fairly easy time resplitting with this splitter being it is designed for it. On the other hand the log lift is a nice feature to have for staging and auto cycle does save some time but bigger is definitely harder to move around your yard.

      This bolt is one I got at a local hardware store. The handle breaking is a very small cheap easy fix and it is the only thing after 7 truckloads...105 full cords.

    The threads actually fractures the strength of the shaft.

      Yes, that is where it breaks each time, just above the bolt.

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might have been! I say it because it is a song that is considered a classic and has been redone a lot. My family sometime says good night Irene when saying good bye. My grandmas name was Irene and my father in law used to sing it all the time too!!!

    Check the tightness of the nuts every now and then. If you keep them tight up the stack, the roots of the threads on the bolt will be protected from flexure fatigue, which is what has been breaking the bolt.

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Thomas, that is my plan. If/when it breaks again, I'll just screw it back in again!

    • @clarksimmerman5968
      @clarksimmerman5968 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You probably say this in jest but it is true. Good designs have the cheap parts break to save the expensive ones. Like a shear pin. I would replace the handle a few times a year to save the valve for the life of the splitter.
