    Garret you are one in a million. I love how your advice isnt about following trends or a particlar formula. Its all about design and quality and making those two things fit in to how your life functions. I have slowly been remodell8ng my house and it has largely been based on your advice. I love how you give design advice and advice on how to work around existing structures, not just formulas on how to follow latest trends. Your ethos seems to be about quality, longevity, sustainability and artistry. Not latest trends and fashion.

    Another wonderful video. The one thing I would add as a mom of 3 sons and a grandmother to 2 granddaughters I would recommend good quality synthetic rugs until the kids move out. It’s amazing what young kids and teens can do to a home. 😣 And once they are gone buy a nice wool or silk rug. If you are childless and plan to stay that way you can do whatever you want. 😉

    I agree about the TV armoirs, but they hold a ton of stuff. I put one in my grandbabies' playroom, it holds all their toys! The other one is now my husband's clothes armoir. They hold a lot of stuff. I'm probably too utilitarian.

    LOL, I am hideous, Garrett!
    I have two 'design-don'ts' !
    I have my living room t.v. in an armoire. I love it for me, because I have the armoire on an angle, so it helps block me from seeing my 'entry door table' and hall closet. Also, when the tv isn't on, and the doors are closed, it makes the living room feel more 'quiet'.
    Second no-no: I have an old la-z-boy rocker chair(looks like a regular chair, with a tight-back). And, it is an orangey-gold fabric - tone on tone pattern, sort of a really faint floral pattern. I have it by my stereo, where I can see into living room, hall, entry, kitchen. My husband hates it. Not because it is unappealing (he actually found the fabric for me!) but because he calls it my 'bitch chair'! I can see so much when I am sitting in it, and that usually means I am always finding something to complain about- usually involving something that he is doing wrong. LOL!
    Have a great upcoming weekend, Garrett. Thanks for another entertaining and informative video.

    I've got a damask patterned armchair 😅 it's pretty subtle (almost the same colour all across) and my design style is sort of traditional/grand millennial light (apart from that armchair and a couple of other small bits, I'm more about texture than pattern). I think it works, but I can absolutely see why it doesn't work in most instances.
    I also agree with other people about office chairs - I WFH and my office chair needs to be comfortable. (I also close that door when I'm done working!)

    You are right about the rake for the shag rugs. I'm giving away my advanced age, but when I was a little girl we had *wall to wall* shag carpeting, in every room of our home except the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room. Small objects tended to get lost in it, and stuck in it, and then stepped on painfully. And we were the cool house on the block! The neighbors' homes with hardwood floors were considered old-fashioned. The '70s were kind of a parallel universe to today. LOL

    Maybe it‘s because I’m not American but this nonchalant dealing with a TV in the living room feels so cringeworthy for me! No matter if it regards the living room layout with the TV as a focal point or simply displaying it openly on the wall. I mean, why on Earth?? I don’t keep a bowl of used tampons on the coffee table either. If it’s necessary, just do it in private. Long live the armoire! And NO- the Samsung frame TV is NO solution! We all know it’s no Art! It has no texture, it doesn‘t look like real art- and Most likely the piece of art you have chosen is so generic like an art piece you bought from IKEA.
    *end of the rant finally* Nice video. As usual. Thanks.

    • @GarrettLeChic
      @GarrettLeChic  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks! I don’t think it is a matter of being American or not. People have different tastes and ideas when it comes to the TV. Preferably, I like a TV in the informal family room and not in the formal living room at all. Some people don’t have a formal living room and an informal family room. In that case we need to place the TV in the most sensible and functional location in the room which will be different in various homes. It should not be used as a focal point whenever possible. However, I don’t personally like a big bulky armoire just to house a TV. That just creates another aesthetic issue.

    When my kids were young teens, I let them choose their room decor - paint, linens, etc - and they chose shag throw rugs. They were pretty awful by the time they went off to college, but they loved it! I agree in general about office furniture except the chair. I work from home doing telehealth and while my father-in-law’s old FBI office oak desk looks great, I need a good office chair that rolls and has back support. But I did find one in a black fabric with pretty clean lines, and my office is in a rarely used guest room with nice bedding and art, so it doesn’t give off that corporate vibe.

    My husband "inherited" a pair of wing back chairs from the later 70's early 80's, and when I sought to get them reupholsterered in 1997, the business owner said furniture made after mid-80's is made of cheap pine for frames and not worth it to reupholster. But these frames were good and worth it to replace the fabric which was starting to shred/rip. So the rule is, if it's made after the mid-80's, don't salvage, throw it away.
    Only if you get a super high end piece, like from Baker, is it worth it to keep, if made after mid-80's.

    The shag rugs seem to last about a year in low use areas. I keep them inexpensive cause I do love the look on a bare dark wood floor. I do replace them every year in our bedrooms. It’s nice when my feet land on them in the morning. And it works so well with our mid-century/boho home.

    Yes … I have a make-shift office/cat room & I use others items for a desk…. But I too have the office chair… I need the comfort & support of a good ergonomic office chair. I agree it screams office chair but working 9-10 hour days you need a good chair. I am fortunate I have the extra room to hide the room. Thanks for sharing 😊❤😊 Happy Memorial Day weekend!!!

      Thanks and same to you! I was talking about using office furniture as general furnishings throughout a home as not being a great idea. Using office furniture in a home office especially an ergonomic chair is fine though.

      @@nitamccall9289 Sorry Nita. I did not realize you haven’t had a chance to watch the video yet. A few people have mentioned that about using office furniture for their home office, and I think that’s fine, but the part of the video concerning using office furniture being tacky is when it is done so as general furnishings in the overall home.

    I understand what you are saying about the cheap patterned lampshades. But I love the vintage patterned lampshades of hight quality, the handmade pleaded ikat shades and so on and my problem is that I cannot stand white things. Nothing is white in my home, not even a single wall or vase. So all my shades too have colour and I have one patterned Danish vintage shade that I love very much.

    Those pleated lampshades are dust catchers and hard to clean. I swapped out the one that came with my Stiffle floor lamp for a nice neutral PB shade. Would never use a patterned shade.

    I have my office in the basement, so away from the living spaces. That said, with working from home at least 2 days a week, it is so much more comfortable to be in a space designed for that function.

    • @GarrettLeChic
      @GarrettLeChic  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a great idea! I think it’s totally fine to have office furniture in a home office, but I don’t care for office furniture being used as general furniture around the house. I think that’s pretty reasonable for an interior designer to feel that way. 🙏

    I have seen a good use for those big old TV cabinets. A friend of mine who is into retro gaming made it into a self contained retro game station - he has several consoles, an old TV and all games and controllers contained. Very easy for clean up - just shut the door.

    No TV and no armoire. I had a landlord who loved shag rugs. I hated them. I rented a rug cleaner. It couldn't get it clean. I got on hands and knees then to clean it. I just couldn't get it clean. Horrible! My office is a separate bedroom. People dont walk in there. I work in there. When I leave, I shut rhe door. Im now home.
