My little sister’s last horse when we were growing up was a retired parade Palomino who could do anything on command including rear indefinitely. She was nearly 5’ 4” and 110lbs soaking wet in all her clothes. The horse was a monster just shy of 20 hands and over 1700lbs. She had to vault to get on him, when you’re young you can do that. She rode him bare-back and bare-foot. They had a amazing relationship and were quite the sight...

He'd lean his left side against the rails and I'd climb up the other side. 60 years later I still miss that gentle talented good boy. As little as I was I could use my knees and legs and he'd respond.
It's a great source of pride in being physically able to step up onto such a large horse, truly. And after 33+ years as a trainer/exhibitor, I will attest that myself, and most trainers I know suffer pretty severe hip joint pain in the left hip joint from all that torque suffered over the years. Cool as that is, to preserve your health, and possibly avoid the hip replacement so many of my co-harts have received, use the mounting block. Once your up there, you still look just as fierce!

My appaloosa was 16.2HH. I had a student who at age 12 was about 4'6 and had been partially paralyze either just prior to or shortly after she was born. I always taught my students not to use a step stool. She asked me if she could get on Mandi without my help. We were both so proud of her when after several attempts she was able to reach her goal. Her momma was so happy with that as well. You can do anything you set your mind to do. Thank for posting this video and bringing up that memory. Ride safe, lady.

A giant horse named Porky bit me on the shoulder when I was cleaning his stall. I said, ok, you can stand there in you own poop till tomorrow! (I usually took him out but I didnt that day so It was my own fault...sorta)

i don't have a horse, I just use other people's horses, it's easier that way especially if you don't have much time to care for one. Its the same with dogs, cats, kids, etc.
If she is around 5'5" or so and her horse's withers (shoulder) is about the level of her neck, the horse is probably about 17 hands high. I had a bay gelding that size. If I wanted to ride bareback (which I did in winter to sit on his warm body!), I'd have to find an ant hill or brick to stand on! 😂 Horses are amazing creatures, this one is magnificent and the young woman has perfect posture. Lovely!
That's kind of where I was at. I did my height based on the brickwork behind her. The bricks measure 3.5" in height. The total door height is right around 7 ft or slightly more and that horse's shoulder is about halfway up the open upper half of the door. Easily all of 16 hands, maybe 17 or a bit more.
Horse? bricks? I need to watch again! And before you dig in, do you really think this women would have done this video in the way she did if she didn't look the way she does.

At 71 years of age, I use a mounting block, train my rides to stand still while I get on, and reward good behavior with treats.
