[Quick Walkthrough] Maruti Alto Auto Dimming Inside Mirror (IRVM) - Autophile MOD#4

This video demonstrates how to install as DIY an auto dimming inside rear view mirror (IRVM) in Alto. An auto-dimming mirror uses electricity to dim the light reflecting from its surface. It offers greater safety when driving at night, as it reduces glare of light coming from trailing vehicles & prevents driver from being dazzled. Auto dimming IRVM is an exclusive feature offered only in top-end car variants by OEMs, even in expensive Indian cars.
To begin this upgrade for Alto, firstly, the stock mirror assembly has to be removed. In Alto, the mirror and dome light are integrated as one part. After removing the assembly, the mirror stem has to be cut to separate the dome light which then can be installed back in car. The auto dimming mirror components were conveniently purchased online from Boodmo. The mirror assembly part is common among four Maruti models (Baleno, Ciaz, VItara Brezza & Scross). For installing the mirror, only major work required is to mount the auto dimming mirror to windshield for which compatible mounting bracket is needed. Unfortunately, it is not available as spare part from Maruti. I had to procure a used bracket from a windshield repair shop and got it fixed to windshield using strong adhesive at marked position. Before starting the wiring process, disconnect the negative terminal from battery. Only ACC and ground signal is necessary input for the mirror. ACC wire is tapped into cigar lighter socket and ground signal taken directly from nearby body mounted screw. The upper and lower cover trims are fit which help hide the wiring. After successful installation, the mirror will switch on automatically each time car is started and auto dimming will be activated. 'Auto' button on the mirror can be used to toggle the dimming feature. Finally in terms of cost, I spent Rs.3,809 for this upgrade.

The mirror and two plastic cover trims are Suzuki genuine spares. OE part no. for the cover trims - Lower 84781M61M00, Upper 84781M68P00. The Lower trim fits normally over the mirror stem, but I had to shorten the Upper trim according to available space. Used a hand saw blade to cut the top edge of the trim. There are two small tabs, which are necessary to hold onto the headliner. So I cut the trim in such a way to retain the original shape profile of the edge, including the tabs, and finally it should look as if only its length is reduced.

Really glad the video's useful. If I may try to understand the issue you're encountering, the IRVM dimming depends on the ambient light intensity. It dims less in daytime in order to provide a clear view and more in the night to reduce glare. You'll notice there's a sensor at the back. You can perform a test by covering it with your palm, and shine your phone's flash onto the mirror. It should dim completely. In case you feel that it's not dimming enough, recheck the connections (+12v and ground) and confirm the voltage with multimeter. Hope this helps. Drive safe 😀👍

I got honda city's irvm at 350 something, auto dim and fitted in the vehicle (Alto), I have reverse disable wire as well.
Alas, didn't think of cross OEM retrofit 😕. Came about City's low cost A/D IRVM, only sometime after installation. Great you went for it 👍.
@@Autophile well I was initially bit skeptical to go with it coz it had five wires , had no information about that. However 300 odd was worth the trial and test method. Anyways hacked it atlast. Hahaha..
I also have added the door ajar warning lamp in the instrument cluster. It works really nice. Next plan is to add electrically actuated tail gate opener, raspberry pi infotainment with OBD and auto climate control in Alto.

Yes, your interpretation is accurate! The IRVM is configured to deactivate dimming while in reverse, enabling a clear and unobstructed view. This enhances safety by providing greater visibility. And yes, you can connect the positive signal from the reverse lamp. Hope this helps 🙂👍
Which adhesive you used for fixing bracket in windshield
Took help of windshield repair guy. He put same sealant (black) which is used to fix windshield.

So how good is the new irvm setup ? Is it worth the effort ?
Hi Aswin. Honestly, this DIY retrofit required little effort. Only challenge was the mounting bracket. After that, it was almost 'plug and play'. And I think I've managed to nail the 'stock look'. Speaking of the IRVM's utility, I could ask for nothing more. Auto dimming IRVM is the sole answer to the ever growing and selfish practice of people driving with constant high beams on "city roads". Trust me, this piece of technology has made driving a lot more comfortable and safe.

Will it support reverse camera output?
This mirror has only auto-dimming function. No video display for reverse camera.

So before proceeding further, think you should know this. The MGP d/n irvm is really expensive. Alternatively there is a low-cost d/n irvm from Honda. Refer these brilliant DIY threads on TBHP bit.ly/3nZNl1O, bit.ly/3G6NlmS.
You can find the mounting bracket at windshield repair shop. Its same for either mirror (MGP/Honda).
If you decide on MGP mirror, then also get the wiring harness 36820M68P30 for easy connection.

The IRVM and trim covers are OEM genuine. The mirror mount bracket, even though a Maruti part, is not available in spares. Had to procure a used one from windshield repair shop.

Most probably, it would be compatible with the stock mounting bracket and rest is general wiring connection. Sorry bud, am not a Mumbaikar and can't suggest anybody.

Mounting bracket does not come with mirror. In my knowledge, the bracket is not available as an OEM spare part as it is integral with the windshield. Best way to get the bracket is, go enquire at a nearby windshield repair shop. They remove such brackets from broken windshields and stock them. I got one for Rs.100. The technician also helped me to permanently fix the bracket onto the windshield using sealant adhesive.

Can we connect this irvm with dome light wiring if yes then how?
The wiring is actually simple. Follow the video to identify the positive (4) and negative (1) terminals on the mirror. Take positive signal from cigar lighter socket and add a fuse. Route the wire behind dashboard and then along the A pillar to reach the mirror. Take negative signal from any body-fixed bolt which is nearest to the mirror. I took it from the sun visor mount. Here, I did not use a socket connector for the mirror. For that you will have to buy the original wiring harness. I managed to plug the wire ends over the pins as a quick solution. It works perfectly.
@Piyush The dome light has constant +12v wire. If you use this for IRVM, then it will be always ON. So take the accessory signal from cigar lighter or directly from dashboard fuse box.

@@Autophile yes bro we can adjust the mirrors by electrically but there is no auto folding we have to fold the mirrors manually
From OEM, verna transform got only electric adjust mirror, no electric folding. Possibly some conversion kit should be available in aftermarket.
Meanwhile let me also enquire about kit / retrofit possibility.

Guess it shouldn't be of any concern. It's something that only enhances our driving comfort and safety. As long as installation quality is ensured, you wouldn't have to worry much about that.
Bhai apne pins main se wire kaise lagai ?
Kyunki mere pass connector available nahi hai, toh maine ek shortcut tarike se wire ko connect kiya hai. Wire ke end mein ek needle insert karke, insulation ko thoda bada kar liya jitna ki IRVM socket pin wire mein insert ho sake, aur thoda tightly bhi. Kyunki wire ko upar se lagaya hai, tho woh apne aap disconnect ho hi ni sakta.
Please be aware that its only correct and safe to use a suitable connector. But you may try one trick. If you have, take a spare connector plug with female pins, and remove the pins from it. Then join the pins to the wires to connect with irvm.

Yes, absolutely! You can install this auto dimming IRVM in Maruti Swift as well as any car for that matter. You'd need to affix the suitable bracket/button on the glass to mount the mirror. After that it's a simple task of providing +ve 12v and -ve ground. Hope this helps. Drive safe 😀👍

Tell me explain me it's process
First of all, purchase Auto Dimming IRVM, Cover Trims and Metal Bracket needed for mounting. Prepare a temporary wiring harness with positive 12v and ground wires and verify the IRVM working. Next, decide the position of IRVM on windshield and mark the place for bracket. Then, fix the bracket using strong bond glue. You may visit local windshield repair shop and take help for this. Let the glue dry for sometime and set well. In the meantime, prepare the complete wiring harness with positive 12v (ACC signal) and ground wires, and route till IRVM location. Finally, mount the IRVM, connect the wires and fix the cover trims.

Fear not, and proceed with confidence. I can assure you that it is compatible for any car, as long as we feed the correct electrical connection. The IRVM is Maruti OEM genuine. Only trouble is getting the metal bracket. It is not sold separately by Maruti. Try local windshield repair shop for spare bracket (taken from broken glass).

Is your mirror still attached ? Because mine fell down recently which was fixed with epoxy glue but lasted only 4-5 months and it fell down so now i've got it fixed with the same kind of black glue as you did from windshield repair shop , please let me know the status of your mirror so I can get some trust on this glue before going out trusting on this glue blindly and facing issues on the roads 🤣🤣🤣
Hey Michael. Sorry to hear you had to go through such ordeal. Needless to say, epoxy glue needs careful prep and curing. Calling it brittle is a big understatement. Now, as far as the black sealant adhesive is concerned, you can absolutely trust it. It's used to fix a windshield on, which says enough already about its strength. And to give you more peace of mind, yes mine is fixed solid still and believably, it will be so forever. So rest assured and take joy in that glare free rear view. Drive safe 😀👍
