I don’t want to wake the house up, so I play unplugged at night, doing scales and riffs. I have other LPs and this is my favorite, as it has specs like a custom shop, and I think it’s better. Thanks again for the time. Steve
Jack you are the PREMIER Demonstrator on line! This demo was precise to the point and you showed us that the LES PAUL is the KING of great Guitar tones.. Not to take it away from the Amp sounds killer!
Beyond happy with my 60’s standard. I play both clean and high gain. Now my clean isn’t completely a true clean because I have a Marshall dsl20cr so it’s a clean gain. But you can turn the gain down, volume up, use your guitars knobs to get the desired tone, then between my drive and compressor pedals I can boost the volume. I know it’s a lot to get desired tones but you have a ton of range. Also once you switch over to channel 2 it’s absolutely glorious. Gives all the old school rock tones you desire. I love the 50’s especially for the fatter tone. But it doesn’t fit my playing style and I prefer Grover tuners and a thinner neck profile.
I have a 2019 Les Paul Classic Satin limited edition, with classic 57 and Super 57 pickups and a 50s rounded neck with Grover tuners, built in Dec 2018. It’s a real hybrid between 50s and 60s. Great guitar and has that woodyness I was searching for in a single cut. BTW Jack, your playing is absolutely fantastic! Wish I had your chops brother!
I ended up getting a 60s standard in bourbon burst. I kinda like fat necks but it just felt easier to play for longer on the 60s and something about the feel and tone and the beautiful top on this particular one sold me hard. I fell in love for sure.
I have a 2019 Standard, but it has all the tonal options of the Classic. Seafoam Green. Best of both worlds. Locking tuners, Burstbuckers, thinner neck, some weight relief.
Yeah, unfortunately your guitar was one of the last to come out of the "dark ages" at Gibson. Your Standard isn't the same as these new back-to-basics standards. All those features you just mentioned are exactly what they wanted to separate from the Standard. I'm sure it's a great guitar. But Seafoam Green, push-pull pots, weight relief, etc. Those things aren't indicative of the classic Les Pauls. Glad they still kept that guitar around but just changed the name. These new range of Standards are exactly the way the Les Paul should be, and should have always been.
@@ScottXC91 2019 was in the dark ages? Less than two years ago. I hear you, but I am a little sick of all the the "classic" LP bursts. Everyone has them, and they all look and sound exactly the same. Gibson still makes the Les Paul Moderns and they sell pretty well. I guess you can say mine is a Modern with the "Standard" name on the Truss Rod cover.
The new 60's is the perfect storm for me - non-weight relief, Grover tuners, thinner neck, Alnico 5 pickups with unbalanced coils and a nitro finish. I've bought two of them (an Iced Tea and an Unburst - btw the unburst looks better on the internet, the iced tea looks better in person). All I did was swap out the awful truss rod cover that says "Standard" on it with a blank one, and put the non-reflector top hat knobs on (like the 50's one). Literally the perfect guitars. I love them to no end.
Played all of them this past weekend, and for me the classic was the best playing, sounding, and resonating. I bought the classic. I’m in love with it! Owned a 2001 standard and the classic is the only one that comes close to it.
Best Les Paul demo video I’ve ever seen. Intelligent format, thorough yet concise, points out similarities and differences in each model, and features great playing. This is the video I will be showing my students. Well Done!
Just found your channel a few days ago with the "Tele / Strat / LP Riffs" series. Really nice job comparing these and you have an excellent playing style for these demos. Thanks.
It looks less cool in person honestly. I thought the exact same thing but seeing it in person... the high gloss with the worn out finish just don't quite match up. Not to take away from the guitar at all I was just a little let down personally
Very impressed with the sound of the ‘60s Les Paul. The classic is ideal for those who want coil splits (and looks so much better than the ‘modern’). A Les Paul 50s does what it says on the tin, though to me the one with P90s (not in this video) sounds so much better. Was disappointed with the Slash guitar pickups though, too much middle & treble in the sound for me. Then again, it’s all about individual choice. I think I’d go for the ‘60s or get a ‘50s with P90 pickups.
I have the 60s and I found that it is the most comfortable neck that I have ever played. I tried the 50s but got quickly swayed away by how chunky its neck is.
Really well done. Fantastic tone, fantastic playing. You really do these proper justice and milk everything a rock and roller would do with them (though I have a feeling that you're capable of quite a few styles!) I love the 'dry Marshall' tone you dialed in. I got a 60's Standard 6/19. Before that, I looked for a new Les Paul for 20 years and finally settled for PRS Singlecuts, but they never scratched my itch. Since the Les Paul purchase, I've added an SG '61 Standard and a Les Paul DC Special. Love them all - though the new SG needed fretwork done (dead spots) which kind of disappointed me, but my tech will get it right in no time. Thanks for a great vid!
Killer playing and demo! In the old days (mid '90's), the "Classic" model had ugly greenish fret markers, super high output uncovered 498/490 pickups, and a '1960' engraved on the pickguard. It was the only way to get a slim taper neck though.
I've got a 60s as I prefer the slim taper. I consistently find it to be a very sweet and round tone. I've got a '61 SG RI that also has the 61r/t pickups. I guess I'm just an unabashed fan of those pickups - though I know I would be more than happy with the BB 1&2s. I've got BB 2&3s in another Les Paul. Like them a lot, but prefer the 61R&Ts for their sweetness and complexity. Got a great deal on a blem Classic (which consisted of few scratches that I easily polished off). I LOVE it! It's become my workhorse LP. I grab it 4 to 1 over my others because there's just something about its presence and punch. Funny thing about the weight relief - can't notice any difference than my 60s, though my other LP is definitely heavier.
A lot of money for any of these. I got a used 97 ebony with gold trim studio with ebony fretboard. Came with 496/500 pups ,straplocks and a chainsaw case. Since I've had it Ive changed a lot of the parts like Kluson locking tuners, Tusc XL nut, Tonespro locking bridge, CTS 500K pots, 50's wiring and IMHO made it a better guitar. All that for about $1400. Looks classic, plays nice.
Regarding the tone diff between tuners …. I changed all the screws on my dsl from Phillips to slotted… you wouldn’t believe the tone changed … i am in the process of removing the R from my cab
I got the LP Special a year ago, and it's just a monster guitar. Right now I recently got an Eastman SB59, waiting for it. Really looking forward to it. But from the video it's the Standard 50's. Has the perfect neck profile and love the BB 1 & 2. But for the money, the Gibson LP Special and Eastman can't be beat.
Great comparison and and great playing! Thank you for going over all the options and features of each guitar....very helpful. I really like the versatility and the different sounds of the Classic. Thanks again!
I heard the riff which I instantly recognised, then spent half an hour trying to rack my brain to think what track it was, then I eventually had to go through the comments so thank you, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to sleep, still trying to think where it came from 👍
Wow! That intro blew me away brother! I have a question, I have a 2021 Gibson Les Paul Studio. Which I love a lot.I like the 60's Les Paul. Really cool. I play quite a bit of Classic Hard Rock, i.e., Zeppelin, Beatles, Stones, Green Day, 38 Special, Skynyrd, AC/DC, Sabbath, that kind of music. Can you recommend another Les Paul for this kind of music? Thank you.
I Liked the Slash and 50s models the best. Hard to say which one I'd buy but more than likely I would go for the 50s. But if I got the right deal on a Slash model in appetite burst I couldn't say no.
I prefer les paul custom black beauty than slash, and for all around i pick traditional pro III - IV - V ,and for newbie i choose studio for value or standard 50's (classic tone) / traditional (beefy tone) if you have more budget
Excellent comparison vid! I’m currently awaiting a Flame Maple Trad Pro V that’s shipping my way. To me, it seems to marry the 50’s trad feel/sound with the modern tech and multi-tonal options from the splits&taps of the push-pull pots.
The Burstbucker 61s are actually lower in output the BB1 and 2 but use A5 magnets which give a tighter more aggressive tone with tighter bass and and a sharper treble attack . The BB 61 are also wound differently. They have more windings on the screw coil where the BB1 BB2 BB3 are wound hotter on the slug coil which give them more low mids and a fatter warmer tone . More windings on the screw coil gives more upper mids and treble and a brighter thinner tone. So between the A5 magnets and a hotter screw coil the BB 61 sound more aggressive while actually having a lower output reading. By 1961 gibson started to tighten up their winding practices and those latter Pafs from 61 were starting to become more consistent and end up with output levels lower and closer to the target output of the original PAf spec . The hottest PAfs come from 1959 and 1960 and have a wider output range compared to the ones from 61 and 62 even though the ones from 61 and 62 are brighter and more biting due to lower output and A5 magnets. A lower output pickup with an A5 magnet will often times sound hotter then a hotter wound pickup with an A2 magnet .
You did a great job on this video I needed to quickly understand the differences between all the Les Pauls and you really helped. The Standard 50s is the one I should look for and the others, once I understood the differences, were obviously not for me. I think it would be the case for anyone. Know the options and then go for what suits you and your journey. Cheers!
I'm glad we could help, that is exactly why we put this video together. To give viewers a better understanding of what makes each individual model unique and hopefully help you make a more informed decision as to which one will suit you best!

Since I've had it Ive changed a lot of the parts like Kluson locking tuners, Tusc XL nut, Tonespro locking bridge, CTS 500K pots, 50's wiring and IMHO made it a better guitar. All that for about $1400. Looks classic, plays nice.
Great demo!
That 60s is a beast
You rocked that 60s standard man!! If that wasn't your favorite guitar of the bunch you could of fooled me...
60s sounds awesome
The absolute best channel for guitar shopping!
I have a pelham blue 2018 (true)Classic with P90s, natural back, non-relieved. Killer guitar for every genre, not sure about the player in me tho. 😂🙌🏼
Great video. I could hear the most tone difference in the 50s model!
Hello from France.
Classic for me, and the duesenberg caribou just behind you. I have the same...
Now i want a les paul classic in addition
Great comparison and and great playing! Thank you for going over all the options and features of each guitar....very helpful. I really like the versatility and the different sounds of the Classic. Thanks again!
Will have a Fiddy's, matter of time. Letting go of my Studio will be like
watching a kid go off to college. Tears will fall. Great review, thanks.
Id like to see the Classic vs the Modern as they are both in the modern collection.
I have the Slash guitar, and the 50's style, and just picked up the Trad Pro V
Nice!!! Old Rush. Best I Can. And for Jack, that's quite good lol
I heard the riff which I instantly recognised, then spent half an hour trying to rack my brain to think what track it was, then I eventually had to go through the comments so thank you, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to sleep, still trying to think where it came from 👍
Haha nice. Been a huge rush fan for about 35 years lol.
Excellent review, thanks!!
Great demo. I recognized Rush Best I can. What were the other songs you played?
Jack is so good! Thanks bro...great comparison....50s tobacco!
Really enjoying these demos Jack, well done sir!!
Superb video, great presentation.
grown into a great player jack, awesome stuff dude
Great playing, as always!
Great demo vid. Excellent product knowledge - cleared a few things up for me. Thanks.
I used to be around shredders , thiese players will have you believe it was all about thin necks, but when I try the 50 styles , it made me focus on slowing down and listening more .
Great playing Jack, just curious, whats the name of that ditty you played on the 60s Std, at about the 18:45 mark ini the key of A? Thanks guys!
Very Good assessment of all the Les Pauls would love to see a Murphy Labs assessment as well ,Great Job
