The uk had to give hong kong to China as it was written in the treaty after the opium war that the uk would control Hong Kong for 99 years, but due to the Chinese civil war it was extended (correct me if I’m wrong with anything here, this is coming from the top of my head)

It’s 99 Years and the treaty is meant for the extra territory that British empire got from the Qing.
the chinese followed the treaty signed by qing cause it suited them they dumped the indo-tibetan border treaties to expand their claims on parts of India.

It’s been 4 years… I am a half chinese half british girl, I grew up in hong kong and it hurts to think about, but it’s also empowering to listen to this. I moved to the UK to live with my dad due to covid and partly the protests, and I haven’t been back since 2020. I’m young, so none of this was my choice, but I’m glad I’m here, but simultaneously so sad to think about Hong Kong.

The district council handles local town size affairs, like housing, public facilities and services, funding, roadworks, tourism, transportation, etc.
I know it seems like it means nothing (compared to LegCo where they pass legislation), but since the pro democracy camp are essentially in control of the District Council, they can still utilize that power to win more support from the opposite camp.
And also, the pro-Beijing government and their allies had always been under the illusion that the protesters are just the minority of Hong Kong, that the public does not support them, which was proven wrong by the election results.

Its an insult to them in a way, noting their own hypocrisy but turning their tyranny into a cry of freedom. It's similar to the US when the British made the song Yankee Doodle to mock us for thinking we're all fancy and mighty, so we started singing it and now it's a famous and American recognized song.

In fact, my support for them would increase and I'd probably start sending them money if they started killing people because that would mean that they had moved past being mere protesters to being revolutionaries. And there is nothing more worthy of respect, honor, or admiration than sacred and God-given right of revolution.
