Bungie Magic, But Low on MP | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 398

- While Sony's $3.6 billion purchase of renowned developer Bungie was contentious in some corners from the get-go (including here on Sacred Symbols), it's also true that the deal came loaded with a ton of potential. But only two years later, it's become increasingly obvious that Sony, well, got got. With a significantly lowered headcount, cancelled projects, a spin-out incubation team, lost personnel to SIE, and more, there's a lot to go through above and beyond what we'd ever cover on Sacred Symbols proper. Thus, I (Colin) convened three Bungie Enjoyers from our ranks -- Chris Ray Gun, as well as Punching Up's Gene Park and Summon Sign's Brad Ellis -- to help me get into the weeds. Will Marathon succeed? Could Destiny 2 survive? Should Pete Parsons go? Was Destiny spin-off Payback a good idea? Does Project Gummybears have a shot as a first party title? Is there even such a thing as "Bungie Magic" anymore?
Welcome to Last Media
(Stand sold separately)
Well done.
There it is.
Unfortunately, many won't be able to afford the 20 dollar stand
Sad Cog couldn’t be here he needs this therapy session bad.
Yeah, seriously...next to Chris, I'm pretty sure he's the biggest Bungie/Destiny diehard at LSM?
11:10 bungie talk
Those predator catcher videos are depraved. There is literally a black mirror episode about that. I do love body cam videos though and Colin is right. They made me more sympathetic to police officers because the shit they deal with on these body cams is insane.
What do you mean
I played Destiny everyday for years and was not happy at all when they removed content. Chris wtf you talking about?
CHRIS DOESN'T KNOW FUCKIN' ANYTHIN'
I've gotten to where I straight up can't stand to listen to him.
2:01:11 😄
Welcome to the club. I skip forward when I can tell he's about to babble about something.@@nkw1985
Chris, they've been tuning PVP seperate from PVE for years now. You say you play but you're clueless on the tuning.
Sunsetting happened because the Tiger Engine has memory limitations.
Any Destiny fan listening knows Chris has no idea what he’s talking about.
It’s true Chris doesn’t always know exactly what he’s talking about since he doesn’t play Destiny every week like those of us with Stockholm syndrome, but his point is valid in that having to balance guns and abilities for PVE (dominant player base) and PVP (like 15% of the player base) is still a bit of a nightmare!
I am once again begging for people to comprehend. They have separate tuning now, and for years they weren’t. Thats not even the point I’m making. What I’m saying is that even with separate tunings, there is a limit on the how crazy you can get with weapon design and functionality when you need to account for how it will affect a competitive sandbox. PVP creates a creative ceiling if you also care about balance. It’s not just about tuning it’s about core design.
Also, obviously sunsetting is an engine limitation. I don’t think anything I said anything that contradicted that.
@@ChrisRayGun I love you Chris
@@ChrisRayGun Get lost Gay Gun. You're a do rk.
Gene also forgot to mention that FFXIV took the time to truncate a lot of ARR story content to help get new players into the game faster/easier. That helps a bunch with both the new player experience, and the file size issue as well
Chris defending the removal of any content I freaking paid for is the biggest L he's ever had. I played Destiny from beta D1 and I dropped the game and refuse to touch any Bungie game since they stole The Red War from me.
and get this, they bring back old exotic weapons and armor...pretty much pay for it again lol
Is it any issue? This has been done before Destiny 2 and will continue after Destiny 2 because content will always disappear in Online games. Part if that is copyrighted content in a sense like IP Crossover. For example Fortnite loses skins every month based on old agreements.
@@chris9206 You don't lose Fortnite skins you have already bought ever.
@@OhMyJye you do realize most of the Fortnite skins that were purchasable aren't available currently, right?
I quit Destiny because of this. This is the worst pro concept ever.
Warhammer lore on TH-cam is my new sleepy time routine
We are simple humans. If a company gave us:
- a good salary (to survive and some money to burn)
- good coffe
- good sandwiches
- good company of colleagues
That's all we need to be happy
It was a reactionary move. Microsoft put the pressure on them by gobbling up full on publishers.
I hope they have learned from this. They never went out and bought anyone before working with them directly in a project. This was a massive failure. And it makes me worry about these other reactionary moves. Who thinks Concord isnt going to flop? Cmon
Brad: Just get into Warhammer lore, Colin. You'll be good for 10 years
Colin: yea i think I'll pass on that
😂😂
love you Gene but the 3 b's were Bioware, Bethesda and Blizzard, I think it had something to do with the fact that they made RPGs or RPG adjacent things. Bungie was hugely successful in that same window though for sure, probably more so than Bioware and Bethesda combined before Skyrim happened.
Definitely not bioware. it was bungie. you're tripping bro
LSM really needs to implement a morale-boosting monthly knitting club.
It's funny listening to the bits of Concord talk now with hindsight.
I wonder how different parts of this chat would be now.
Killzone legitimately has some deep lore.
Dang no time stamps
I'll help you...
0:00 - Pure idiocy (for the most part)
Boy the Concord remarks didnt age well! LOL!
What concord remarks?
Those Concord comments didn't age terribly well...
Great cast guys, very insightful each one you
stop with the thirst traps chris!
I still will never understand the argument that someone could’ve used their personal wealth to save the company or people’s jobs. That’s not the company’s money.
How does it look if Pete undercuts Sony's funding? Shame not having Hoeg Law on this show.
Wouldn’t it make a lot of sense for Sony to just move Firewalk into a support position for Bungie, and maybe start to create a family of studios working on shooter series with the best chance to survive
Haven can join them when Fairgames fails
Love Destiny. Bungie devs still have magic. Problem is Parsons and Co. Will keep playing until they shut off the servers. Agree with Chris’ takes.
I don't think Chris plays Destiny more than a couple weeks after each expansion
Talking about the manager of bungie sounds like Jim was the reason this happened. He wanted to get into the live service by any means. Then Hiroki came in and was like “wtf are you doing with our money” and forced him out.
There is a section in the game where they have a curated set of missions from the old expansions. Key moments and cutscenes and not having to worry about the horrible filler fetch quest stuff they were leaning on during that era. There is a lot of misunderstood stuff about this game because most people that comment on it don't really play it or they have played in a very long time. You guys should reach out to people like Paul Tassi or Cog and the Last Word crew to come on and talk about the game and the company. Also the store in game is so bland. I don't know anyone who spends money on microtransactions in the this game. Games like COD and Fortnite are virtual candy stores and make Destiny store look so horribly boring. I love this game and been there since beta with my friends.
24:10 that's was actually funny
27:20 - 27:32
The f is gene smoking
“Access Media” cope
Hey Gene, didn't know you're a Gator
Chris wears a yankee hat and doesn’t even know who Aaron Judge is
Some ball caps are fashion items (Yankees, Tigers, Dodgers, Reds etc) no surprise if somebody who wears one doesn't follow the team.
@@kingarthur6173 that's weird
@@MikeG82 Nah. Simple fashion choices.
@@kingarthur6173 a simple fashion choice would be wearing a hat of something you actually like
@@MikeG82 No. You wear what matches. Simple.
I still think Anthem can be revived.
No one said no more expansions. They said smaller free expansions. Intead of 1 a year, two in a year. Every 6 months. Monotinized by selling Raid and Dungeon keys, season passes, with the current MTX system. I swear I'm listning to ignorant lapsest players.
Hey Gene just wanted to let you know if you do ever get the itch for destiny beyond lights full campaign is in the game it directly followed shadow keep
Destiny 2 is not an MMO. It's an online RPG-FPS.
There's nothing massively multiplayer about it. A large playerbase doesn't mean it's massively multiplayer, otherwise Call of Duty would be an MMO. The "Massively Multiplayer" part refers to the number of players that can be together at once, and the max lobby size is 12, in 6v6 PvP, same as Call of Duty.
Destiny 2 borrows ideas from MMORPGs, but it's not one in itself, it's an MORPG, a multiplayer online roleplaying game.
Marathon will be HUGE!
lol concord
Sony knew, why else would they put in financial conditions in the deal? Why do you think Sony is now taking control of Bungie. Use your brains,
Uhhh because ANY deal where the entity retains its autonomy from the entity buying would have financial conditions in the contract. Like, OBVIOUSLY. Would you buy a company for that much money, and then agree to have NO say in how they run and what they do, but NOT include a clause that says “if y’all start messing up bad and losing me a bunch of money, I’m taking your autonomy away” ??
Dragon Age looks fantastic wtf are you on about?
RDJ is still playing Tony Stark just a different variant. I believe that’s the hole thing now different variants of the same characters.
Actually that’s NOT what Marvel said. They specifically stated that he is playing Victor Von Doom; not Stark. He may end up being a Stark variant, but all we know thus far is that Marvel announced RDJ’s Dr. Doom IS Viktor.
Are they really judging the Bungie purchase before they release a single new game? What idiots, lol.
Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy were responsible for the absolute disaster that was Destiny 2 launch. I don’t think it matters that they are gone.
Destiny is awesome. It’s fuucking awesome!!!
It was fun. Put 4000+ in the franchise. Now I'm taking a long break
No Chris, plenty of Destiny mainstays were pissed at the sunsetting because like most of the game till then it showed Bungie winging it, and missing the mark greatly which ultimately makes for a poor experience...especially when being asked to cough up for hit/miss (often miss) DLC every year. And Bungie wonder why people don't care anymore???? Delusional chumps
Not the best thumbnail given recent events. But we'll let it slide
Deadpool is the best Marvel character IMO
Destiny 2 has no future if they can’t re-add all past content after anything new , it’s pos old engine just like halo 1-2-3, you can’t have new players if you removed 2/3 of old expansions…
All they have to do is destiny 3-4, upgrade the engine, more planets, space combat, marathon nobody cares nor knows of it unless your 40-50 years old LOL.
If they don’t do D3-4, marathon fails, Sony will just move everyone in their studios, bungie has had shit management since halo 1, and leadership gone after halo reach/split of MS, how they can be broke after getting 4-5 billions from Sony/activision ?
I don't know what copium you guys drink but destiny is one of the biggest let down games of my life time. It's no where as good or big as Halo. It's story is as shallow and a thimble. The only thing going for it is ok shooting. The classes the bosses the stages the reskined enemies all of it is horrendously mid. It's mid like condord is mid. Super expensive dlc that gives content not worth it. Destiny is mid af. It's such a huge fumble , bungie was once such a prestigious company. Bungie thinks it's hot shit in a champagne glass, but it's actually just cold diarrhea in a solo cup. It's just meh.
