  • Watching someone file and hand sand can be boring, but it is a necessary part of finishing the forged herb chopper from the last video. We will look at hardening and tempering as well.

    John, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Ever since I was about 8 years old, I wanted to be a blacksmith. I am self-taught, and while I have much to learn, you're the smith I aspire to be like. I've never had any proper, in-person instruction, so watching your videos is as close to having a master as I have gotten. Of course, I mostly prefer to make blades, So this project is near to my heart. I've learned so much from you, and I hope to one day be good enough to make you proud. Greetings from my hometown of Pueblo!
    Sincerely,
    Santis

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any steel that needs to be hardened requires quenching. Some steels quench in water, some in oil and some in air. Anything that has been hardened by quenching should then be tempered. Water and oil hardening steels may be cooled slowly in air to remove stress, but that doesn't work on air hardening steel.

    For reaching the temperature of 1475F have you ever tried the salt trick? I've seen it a few times on Forged in Fire. The melting point of table salt is about 1473F or so so they put some salt in the forge and see if it melts to test the heat for quenching. I am not sure how they do it though. I don't know if they put it on the steel or what. Do you know about this method and if it works or not? Thanks!

    • @BlackBearForge

      Salt quenching requires some very specialized equipment and can be very dangerous if done wrong.

      Thanks for the information on that @@BlackBearForge. I am still new and I don't know much. I don't think they were quenching in salt. I just saw them put a little bit of salt somewhere in the forge to see if it would melt to check the temperature. After the little bit of salt melted, they quenched their knives in oil. If that is dangerous I wouldn't try it. Thank you for taking the time to respond to my comment!
