- Destiny 2's lore has many points at which the Darkness is referenced. However an exotic warlock helmet called Nezarec's Sin might reveal the darkness' identity... or it might not. In this video I try to explain who Nezarec is and if they are the Darkness.

The Taken are also responsible for the chicken having the capability to teleport at will, also it's cousin is Calus.
Another thing is its possible that the chicken has a throne which it commands frogs to kill others.

This entire video has a completely different meaning now that Lightfall is out. It's mind melting how well tied in the lore is to what is currently happening.
So it sounds like once we go into the traveler and try to stop the witness we will lose hope and know fear which allows nezarec to manifest. One can only know pain if they know the opposite. So dark and light combo to create pain.

Wow byf... i literally just spoke about this with my fireteam. Perfect timing my good sir.
It seems so much simpler than all of that. Its a pre-golden age text, so when it was written, we didnt know of the light, arc, void or solar. It seems more like its just a passage from a book describing something like the Devil, similar to Dante's Inferno or Faust. The end? The final god of pain? These seem like traits of the Devil as we know him from current texts. Also, how would we be writing about the darkness at a time when we didnt know anything about it? We probably wouldnt.
Some warlock somewhere read a pre-golden age story about a devil-like character and thought it would be a super cool name for a piece of ability enhancing armor.
i can't remember specifics, but i remember in one lore video (either byf or mylin, i don't watch anyone else) we've had post-golden age stuff date back to pre-golden age before, i believe it had to do with those vex researchers, don't quote me though, time travel i guess? just saying it's not impossible and i woudn't rule it out.

Its on nessus at the arrifacts edge. You receive a message from osiris at the end too. Byf we need this
Ghost and Failsafe make Ghost have a Vex signature so the Vex thought you as a guardian had abducted a Vex program (something like that). The Vex send reinforcements to try and "free" Ghost and are found to be afraid of your Light since they cannot simulate it.
You know a channel is good when you come back to it 5 years after it was made.
It almost seems as though The Witness wrote the lore. “Pain” is something that The Witness talks about constantly
perhaps Nezerec was a psion? the helmet bears a striking resemblance to the shape of a psions head, as well as the helmet itself looking like a psions helmet.
Their designs are similar, but this is a harsh no. Their specific designs are vastly different, and this design also is similar to certain Hive wizard's. Nezarec's words predate the knowledge of Psions existence.

Warlock lore? Hell yeah, but I think the darkness isn't someone, I think it's like an essence, a form, a force, it recruits warriors like the hive and like how the light(the traveler) recruits humanity and previously, the fallen(eleski)

Agreed. It is an essence, a belief. An idiosyncrasy. An ideology. However, is the Light the same? It seems counter intuitive to assume the " Light " is such a thing as I describe the Darkness to be. Powers bestowed. But no real structure to the concept. It's a granting, not a divinity. The Darkness may be the same.
Indeed the darkness is a faction, a cult , one that swallows up everything whole, it cannot be killed .. only suppressed . One without equal power. The darkness is the monster that monsters fear.

Well, going by logic of exotic armour in destiny related to a previous wielder like the helm of saint-14, perhaps the nezarec was a warlock who ventured too deep into the void, or the study of voidwalking, and since many guardians consider void walking quite blasphemous, which is another word for sin, i could believe my conclusion

It states "He will rise again" what if Nezarec is a prophecy of The guardian, as some parts match to this, as Light is capitalised as if it's a pronoun, meaning new Light guardians, and that old light dies cayde is older than our guardian and each of the planetary vendors that died when the darkness came. On top of that The guardian is the purest light as being the chosen one, as well as the darkest hour bc nothing has been able to match the raw power of the guardian.. As well as The guardian doesn't cower at the thought of using darkness. It fits really well, if you see this byf please tell us your thoughts. I know there's almost nothing about Nezarec but just as a theory it seems Nezarec was a warrior of some sort before the golden age and his spirit went on to become the guardian As a prophecy was realized by some Oracle of a sort, predicting the chosen one defeating crota Oryx then caydes death and others like teako and ashermir etc. Then the darkness coming as well as savathun and that all will fall to The guardian aka Nezarec.

lol was just about to post a comment to this effect - I'd guess Nezarec is a psion, possibly one involved with the original OXA Machine (a Psion future-seeing device that the Cabal destroyed when they enslaved them), given the "prophecy" tone of the lore text and its predictions about the Darkness. It's pre-Golden Age, but it couldn't be from Earth since we wouldn't have known about the Light/Darkness yet.
Nezarec is the leader of the Darkness. The "Final God of Pain" quote makes it seem like he is the leader of the Darkness because it's pain related. I'm also going to just note something. There is something called "The Fourth Tomb of Nezarec." Do I also have to mention when it says "He is at which end, and he shall rise again." Seems a little suspicious if you ask me. I think the Darkness are trying to resurrect their dead god by doing something to the Traveler.

Less of a question, but just sheer appreciation of humorious lore in Destiny 2 related to destiny 1. If you read the lore of the Sunshot and the Sunbracers, you get to learn who created those exotic gauntlets that we knew as Sunbreakers. We also get a bit of a funny conversation between two warlock arguing over the name. I just thought this was worth mentioning, not as a question, but to appreciate a little bit of Destiny insider humor for those who were around in Destiny 1. Maybe we could get a video or two about rather entertaining items some day?

Failsafe links your ghost to the Vex network and they are telling him to "come home" then you get a message from osiris within the vex network. Would love to know what you think.

I always assumed that the Vex and the Ghosts share an origin via the Traveler. Wherever you find heavy Vex influence you are certain to find the floating ghost eye symbols. Also the Vex utilize both the same architecture as the Traveler and of the pyramid ships. In fact if you look closely at the exterior of the Pyramdion and the original concept art of the pyramid ships, they both bear strangely similar red symbols/writing.
Whenever I did this adventure and mentioned to my friends the Vex could be related to the Traveler and the Ghosts they laughed it off and said that can't be possible, hopefully I can prove them wrong soon haha.
Seems like this Nezarec fella would be a good person to just sit down and have a cup of tea with.

I am sentinel, Hive grow off of pain. That's my Sylok in D1 is so powerful, he was tortured and burned. I also believe it's Hive because of the similarities to the Void and the fact that the Hive are the most powerful race we fight.
The Hive are basically descents of the Darkness. The Worm Gods are apart of the Darkness and they decided to partner with the Proto - Hive. All and All, the phrase should remind you of the Darkness.

The helmet looks similar to the heads of statues which can be found in one of the concept arts of the veiled (the pyramids' aliens).

🚨Crazy conspiracy theory🚨: nezarec is a psion flayer, he killed the Calus replaces him with a robot 🤖 and tried to release the Psions of their enslavement, Ghaul with the help of Freeborn Otzot deposed Calus, now Nezarec as Calus is looking for an army to take over the Cabal empire and free the Psions. They both offer you something, power in the case of Calus but it seems shady that he does so.
Explains why Calus unexpectedly wanted to free the Psions, why he’s a robot 🤖, and and they both make offerings to you. Idk maybe I’m crazy.
Remember the Psions had built the OXA Machine so building an animatronic robot 🤖 isn’t so crazy, and you can’t tell me Nezarec’s Sin doesn’t look like a Psion helm

Bungie isn't there to explain the story, they're there to lay it out and tell it when it's time.
Bungie doesn't explain it, you silly goose, they tell it. Byfe is just explaining it to people who don't get it or don't have time to look at the lore so much to figure it out.
The point that proves in my opinion that he is more than you describe, actually equal to or greater than “the darkness”, is the part that refers to “new Light’s first blink”. The lore tab directly describes the final scene of D2, the the “new Light” has its “first blink”.

If you remember, in the original enemy race teaser art, there were 5 races, the 5th race we never saw, and it had black triangle ships like in the end of D2 cut scene, and the head of the silhouette looks like this helmet, leading me to believe that the 5th race and the black pyramid she's are the followers of Nezarec

Listening to Byf read that passage of the helmet gave me chills. I 'REALLY' wanna hear Byf as a voice actor in Destiny. I want to deal with a serpentine voiced villain who plays about in the background. Who helps when he deems fit but will be the end. Nothing more, nothing less. His assistance would be at his whim and your actions would be his entertainment, wanting to see you grow to possibly someday have something that may actually be worthy of his attentions....and his power.
Dude seriously hope you can see this because your interpretation of sin is I think lacking a lot. Without getting too theological here: Many of us live in Western Society which is informed from Christian Tradition whether we like it or not. In that understanding... We live in a fallen world corrupted with sin starting with Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. God created all things, and all creation is good. Evil does not create, it can only corrupt creation via SIN. This of course took on many social connotations because civilization can only hope to have a social order that promotes the good. Good being in right order with creations intent. When people deviate from that order... that is a kin to sin. That is the full extent of the social/moral connotation.
With this in mind the Traveler could be understood as a device that puts creation in right order. It essentially creates Eden, terraforming, borderline immortality, a world without want. The darkness could still be understood in many different ways but we could suggest via Sin it corrupts creation into evil. Your right however that to do that it needs all creation to still exist. It can not create anything itself. Its existence is bases purely on corrupting and Nezarec in your assessment as a god of pain (pain which signifies something not being in right order) could very well be one of its agents.

I really like the quick format of these exotic based vids, and I'd like to see one on the crown of tempests, as it talks a lot about old king and taking up the mantle, but I don't really understand if that connects to anything specific in the lore

I know this video is old but I’ve been thinking. In the end of the Shadowkeep campaign our copy/the Darkness says “We are not your friend. We are not your enemy. We are your...salvation.” To me it sounds like part of the Nezarec’s Sin lore “For Nezarec is no demon, but a fiend, arch and vile in ways unknown.” It says he isn’t a demon but fiend is defined as a evil spirit or demon. So he is our friend but he isn’t, just like the Darkness says. Also it is now known that the Darkness is a form because when you switch to darkness it says “Embrace the power within and unleash it upon he physical world.” So I believe, we have already encountered Nezarec.
This is all just my theory/thoughts so don’t use this as fact.
I went flawless this weekend and I was listening to the Huge Blue Vendor at the end lmao and I couldn’t really hear all of what she was saying but I DID hear her say something about Borealis. Might be something to look into? And you haven’t done any videos explaining who this “version” of the Nine are and what they want from us exactly. PLEASE do a video about this!!

when the quote says “he will rise again” and other quotes reffering to liking pain this could refer to the hive or possibly Nokris because hes been dead for a while, maybe possibly Savathun because Oryx killed her to ascend into a higher hive. Maybe hinting at a future DLC?
I think the picture with the triangle ships, the weird totems that glow green and the strange statues are maybe related to Nezarec, because if you look at the statues they kind of look like the exotic helmet

I would like a clearer explanation of what the void or what void light is. Because in many cases it has been shown to be a somewhat malicious force yet in other it is shown as something fundamental to the universe similar to Gravity (the original grumpier card describes it as the secrets of the vacuum belying the reality of matter and light).
If Nezarec is a being of the void as Byf suggested this could lead to their being a being or even species which reside or have total control over each respective element. I think it was mentioned that one of Callus's assassins had control over arc energy.
A pact with these beings in order to stop the oncoming darkness (which based on Ulan-Tans theory would also stop the light) could allow guardians to use their powers outside of the Travelers reach, for example the ships that we see at the end of Destiny 2 or deep inside the Dreadnought. These beings could also present us with another subclass for their respective element. A rawer less refined and more primal ability. If Bungie does decide to take it this way, creating figures that are essentially deities, it could lead to a better reason behind subclass changes.
This actually gave me somewhat of a thought. Byf says that they may be similar to the darkness but will ultimately rally against it. What I think is that the ultimate way to fall into darkness is to think your doing something for the good of the people but it in the end is the people's undoing. Maybe the darkness is using people like Ghaul, who to me, was doing something for the better meant of his people but it lead to his death and the failing of the red legion. Just a thought.
