I hoped you'd mention Rurik in Rus, since he founded a ruling dynasty in russian lands up until Ivan The Terrible died, which led to numerous dark events, until Romanov dynasty came
Sadly most people have a very anglocentric view of the Viking Age. Viking Age Russia is usually either ignored entirely or just superficially mentioned at best. It's really sad if you think about all the great achievements of the Vikings in the East. We have tons of evidence for a significant Norse presence in the Kievan Rus during the Viking Age. Viking Age Kievan Rus is very rich in archaeological findigs of scandinavian origin. As a matter of fact genetic analysis of human remains from the Viking Age found in the area of Staraya Ladoga/Aldeigjuborg clearly show a strong genetic affinity towards Scandinavia. During the Viking Age Ladoga was just as much part of the Norse World as Hedeby or Jorvik. The Vikings lived in Russia and ruled large parts of european Russia for hundreds of years. It just baffles me how so many people just ignore the Viking Age in the East.
@@dennisroriksson1889 Vikings in Russia (or Variags) even traded with Byzantium. And slavs got Rurik as thrir leader because they asked him to, and not because he conquered them, putting himself as a sole ruler of the lands in the name of Odin or smth like that.
@@inspector_beyond Not only did the Varangians trade with the Byzantines, they also traded extensively with the Arabs and pretty much any people living at the shores of the Black Sea and Caspian Sea. Though the Varangians were not only skillfull traders, they also raided quite a lot of coastal villages and cities. They even successfully raided big fortified cities such as Baku the capital of Azerbaijan. They also waged massive spectacular Wars against the Byzantines and Khazars. As a matter of fact the Varangians completely anihilated the Khazars.
@@dennisroriksson1889 Variags are underrated. A mercenary Vikings that could lead entire cultures, trade and wage destructive Wars on land and sea. And clasic Viking did? Tried to conquer England and failed, then changed their ways. Honestly, Variags should be the definition of a true Vikings.
@@inspector_beyond I absolutely agree. The Varangians deserve much more appreciation. The Varangians should be much more present in literature, movies and documentaries about the Vikings. The Varangians deserve much more than just being briefly mentioned.

The title got my full attention instantly - it would have been interesting to hear about the Iberian Peninsula though. The Reconquista process was a very long period in the Iberian Peninsula's History, that ultimately forged what is modern day Portugal and Spain. Being from Northern Portugal I'm very curious about the early stages of the Reconquista, since my region was part of the former Roman Province of Gallaecia, which did have its own unique chapter in this long story. Tariq's invasion of the Visigothic Kingdom happened in 711, and the Reconquista started at the 722 Battle of Covadonga. But the 740 Berber Revolt against their Arab companions left Gallaecia practically untouched by the Muslims, and much debate still exists about the theses of the _Ermamento_ , that tries to uncover how was this territory managed during the power vaccum that prolongued until precisely around the years depicted here. Theories are that either the territory was utterly emptied of people (I don't buy that), or it remained with scarse populated communities that responded to neither Christian rule from Astúrias or Muslim rule - although maintaining some cohesion through the Church/Clergy, that didn't left the territory. In either case, the _Presúria_ (an ancient term for the reconquering of a town for that period) of the city of Porto, in which Count Vímara Peres took the city for the Christians, happened precisely in 868! This episode marked the birth of the First _Condado_ _Portucalense_ (County of Portucale), being thus the first seed to the birth of Portugal. By the end of the IX Century, all of former Gallaecia was back again in Christian hands, and I only recall of a punitive campaign from Almansor around the turning of the millenium, that was able to push the frontier back to the Douro river in some places, and sacked Santiago de Compostela. PS: Viking raids, the fragmentation of the Carolingian Empire, and the Muslim invasion were the cause for the creation of the medieval castle.
At least in CK2 christian Iberia gets steamrolled 100% of the time by the muslims. I hope they fix that, in my opinion the game should run as historically faithful as possible UNLESS the player steps in. In the current state the christian iberians get destroyed every time, unless the player is playing as them and is skillful.
@@JuanManuel-ii1ov Balance is really hard to maintain in this kind of game. Hello, I love history and I’m new to this channel. Your videos are great and I’m glad you cover this game since it’s one of my favorites. Also thanks for mentioning my country Algeria in the video, indeed the rostamids were descendants of the Persian sassanian General Rostam who fought in Al Qadisiya, the rostamids were not really in good relationships with Baghdad and their aghlabid vassals, however they maintained good relationships with the Umayyads in spain. Yet the Fatimids imams who came in early 10th century completely changed the Maghreb. New berber dynasties rose to power. And religious conflict erupted between pro Fatimid shias and prob Umayyads sunnis. Over time when islamic spain went into trouble, it became hugely dependent of the situation in maghreb. It would be good if you cover the history of he region from time to time ! Best Regards
If yall ever get to the late middle ages, I really hope you'll do a video on King Casimir III, "The Great" of Poland. This era is over fascinating me to the east Turkic tribes and Slavic Clans to the west Viking invasion of the England to the south wars in Hispania And over all this video perfect, nice art work and scripting.
If you notice, history really is a long list of nomads/tribal people from the boonies and outskirts of the empire (mongolian steppe turks, Southern Russian Khazars/turks, Arab desert nomads during Islamic conquest, Scandanavian Vikings) invading and causing massive havoc and settling down. It's actually what the first crusade was as well.

Then Roger allowed some of these prisoners to escape, to spread these horrific rumours

Man, knowing how much the world has evolved in the past 1000 years, it’s crazy to even try to imagine what the world will be like a thousand years from now in the year 3020.
It was also around that time when the small States of the Hispanic Marsh were declaring their independence from the frankish kingdom. Between those, the counties of Barcelona and Aragon gained the upper hand due to conquest and dinastic unions. Then later on, the county of Aragon became a kingdom thanks to their family relationship with the royalty of Pamplona... until they married their princess with the count of Barcelona and formed the Crown of Aragon, wich later on became a major power at the Mediterranean.
@@tobiasL1991 If you mean the American continent, Canarias, etc... not exactly. The only kingdom who had rights over those were Castille, not Aragon. Even if both were already "unified" by then, it was just a dinastic union. They were still split entities with their own rights and dominions. So the kingdom who did the conquest and colonization was Castille. It wasn't until 1715, after the Succession War, that the spanish kingdoms were oficially unified.
@@tobiasL1991 Nope. While it's certain that they did a lot of joint operations together, those were mostly on the european side, to defend the Crown's interests on the Mediterranean and the surroundings. Not even the kingdom of Aragon was an unified entity by then, since it was composed of the kingdoms of Aragon, Valencia, Mallorca, Sicily, Naples and the principality of Catalonia(old county of Barcelona), and those were most of the time acting independently. They'd even had sepparate kings at some points of their history. And respecting America, they had no rights of conquest, colonization or commerce until 1715, when the Borbon king erased all the divisions. If you see, you'll almost never find catalan family names in Latin America.
@@tobiasL1991 However, you can read about the Catalan Company(1302) and their whereabouts before they arrived at Constantinople. There are a lot of sources explaining their travels between the entities inside the mediterranean dominions of the Crown of Aragon which, if I remember correctly, had 3 kings by then: One was king of Aragon, Valencia and count of Barcelona. Another was king of Majorca and lord of Montpelier. And the third one was king of Sicily.

@@MrSwedjen Everyone calls them magyar, Old Hungarian was spoken more than 1000 years ago, I just noticed it that they use the Old Hungarian form. I have no idea why it became written 'gy' in Hungarian.
The narrator literally mispronounced every single Arabic name in the video, so I don't really trust him in pronouncing anything else of the other cultures correctly. Not that I care much about how they pronounce things, I came for the narration, not to double-check their pronunciation skills.
@@PrinceDolos They mispronounced Mohács at first too, but when they made the battle of Mohács video , the pronounciation was quite good, they also pronounced correctly the Pest (it is sh sound in Hungarian and not s) , so I see they try their best. 4:30 "The future Holy Roman Empire" that's not quite accurate. East Francia would be known as the kingdom of Germany by the mid 11th century. The "Holy Roman Empire" was consisting of the kingdoms of Germany, Italy and Burgundy.
He’s not wrong. East Francia was the predecessor of the kingdom of Germany which conquered the kingdom of Italy to form the Holy Roman Empire under Otto the great. The empire later absorb the kingdom of Burgundy under Conrad ll. So it makes sense that it is the future Holy Roman Empire.
@@hoonshiming99 Yes, I was just nitpicking about the phrasing. Technically the title of "(Holy) Roman Empire" at the early stage wouldn't be attached to any specific territory but to the entirety of Latin Christendom since the emperor was understood to be the secular equivalent of the pope.
@@TheLocalLt Wow, that was one hell of a read :D interesting though I don't think you got my point though: During the early and high middle ages the concept of the Roman Empire in the West was rather unclear. The Roman Empire was presumed to exist outside or independently from any specific Germanic kingdom. According to the theory of "translatio imperii" the Roman Empire of antiquity never ceased to exist but only shifted from one people to another (so they would argue it went from the original Romans to the Greeks, to the Franks, Lombards and Germans). It also was supposed to be around until judgment day according to Biblical prophecy. So, when Charlemagne got crowned emperor he just fulfilled a role that was temporarily vacant. The later Saxon and Salian emperors saw themselves in the same tradition of being some sort of supranational rulers when they crowned the kings of Poland, Hungary and Bohemia and disposed popes. I would say that maybe during or after the Hohenstaufen era the notion of the Holy Roman Empire became one that could be connected to the German ruled realm, meaning that the emperors lost the claim towards universal rulership.
Thank you for the informative video. To be honest, I’ve never really learned history as cohesive parallel stories. I’ve always thought that the history of a certain place happens in isolation from one another. This video is truly an eye opener
Exactly what I wanted to see for so long! A slices of the world at certain year. I am enchanted by the innovative theme of this video. I believe a lot of people would appreciate videos of this kind, i.e. the summarisation of what was betiding the world in a particular period.
I really hope you continue to do these broad overviews of years. It's a great way to get a handle of the big picture of how things play out. Keep up the great work!
The video was so good!!! Thank you for this video. I just miss you talking about the Iberian Peninsula.
I mean Paradox is my favorite franchise as it taught me a lot about history just Like Kings and Generals so it was only natural for this to happen so well done as always
Finally a muslim that likes paradox I thought I was the only one 😂😂
I love this type of deep dive into a starting date type video. I really hope Paradox agree to make more sponser video like this not only for their Cursader Kings series but their other games too. A deep dive into one of the Eu4 starting date would be awesome.
Hell yeah, finally a good explanation about 867, good job
867 never forget
I absolutely love these waterpaint like graphics! Nice job!

This might be the longest ad I've voluntarily watched while not desiring to skip. Very machiavellian of you K&G.
It would be really cool to see a series of these 'the World in year ...' overview videos. Super interesting! 😁👌🏻
Thanks
Glad you did a minor historical look into Balkan Slavic historical foundings (Croats, Serbs, Bulgars). Looking forward to when you will fully dive into unexplored histories of this Slavic nations foundings.
This is the best ad I've ever watched on TH-cam. And I don't even play the game (Crusader Kings) at all.
In my games, Muslims take all of spain and are invincible until crusade time, and then, crusades just crush every muslim leader in the Middle East, ending up with at least 3 large catholics kingdoms in Anatolia, Egypt and Jeruslam.
Hi, I'm from 2023. Your comment was ahead of its time.

This is a great idea. Make more of these: Pick a random year and then explain everything going on in the world in that year.
By far one of the best channels on TH-cam. We're honestly very lucky to have resources like Kings and Generals to learn about the world in such an accessible and entertaining way.
Great choice in utilising the 'Crusader Kings II Soundtrack - The Byzantine Empire' when mentioning the Seljuks, as if forshadowing the invasion of Anatolia that is to come!

Just a quick correction: Oghuz started to convert Islam in 10. century and were not "Islamized" until mid 11. century.
If you searched for Turks religion converting situation in history you can see Tengrist Turks even in 16 century.

He really deserves his own video, but aside from the big details we already know, a lot of details of his life and reign are still in Polish. Here's hoping.

I LOVE how you used PDXs map. Hyped for the game, played CK2 since 2013. Amazing episode as always
This era is over fascinating me to the east Turkic tribes and Slavic Clans to the west Viking invasion of the England to the south wars in Hispania
And over all this video perfect, nice art work and scripting.

@@tobiasL1991 Oof. I cannot think of any, since I learned it from historic novels, biographies and school.
@@tobiasL1991 However, you can read about the Catalan Company(1302) and their whereabouts before they arrived at Constantinople.
There are a lot of sources explaining their travels between the entities inside the mediterranean dominions of the Crown of Aragon which, if I remember correctly, had 3 kings by then:
One was king of Aragon, Valencia and count of Barcelona.
Another was king of Majorca and lord of Montpelier.
And the third one was king of Sicily.

Pronounciaton is 'madyar'. Hungarian gy=dy sound. The pronounciation of 'a' letters were good.
They are called Mogyer Confederation on the map , which is cool. Mogyer is the Old Hungarian word for magyar.
After decades (centuries) of
mispronouncing the name, it is finally corrected here. In an ad. For a game.
Thank you, R. B.
@@MrSwedjen Everyone calls them magyar, Old Hungarian was spoken more than 1000 years ago, I just noticed it that they use the Old Hungarian form.
The pronounciation of gy is always incorrect in every foreign video, foreigners can't imagine what are these double letters , and g is also misleading, because this sound is a palatalized d and not g.
"The future Holy Roman Empire" that's not quite accurate.
@@TheLocalLt Wow, that was one hell of a read :D interesting though
I don't think you got my point though:
During the early and high middle ages the concept of the Roman Empire in the West was rather unclear.
