  • Kaayal is an ancient port town that is 1500 years old town established during the Pandiyan Empire. Its present name 'Kayalpatinam' is derived from two tamil words 'Kaayal' and 'Pattinam' - both denotes the coastal landscape of geographical distribution of Tamilnadu (i.e., Neithal Thinai). Kaayal port was an ancient port in the east coast other than korkai, poompuhar during the Sangam period where traders from different parts of the world such as Misr (Egypt), Syria, Arabia, Ceylon (Srilanka), South east Asia etc reach the Kaayal port to trade across ancient tamilagam. Few of the settlements also happened from Arabia such as Misr and Syria and they got settled in Kayalpatnam.
Archeological Survey of India in its record maintains the monuments, sculptures and graveyards of kayalpatnam which is 1500 years old. It also has historical monuments of 1000 years old such as 'Periya Pallivasal' for which preservation efforts are taken by locals with the community support. Such buildings can be preserved as a 'Monuments of National Importance' with the efforts of both the Union and state governments.
Kayalpatnam is a culturally significant town which has religious shrines at both the corners of every street which attracts religious devotees from Tamilnadu, Kerala, Srilanka to visit the religious shrines.
Kayalpatnam Food which is of very unique in its taste and origin has its own history which needs to be preserved and developed with the help of Geographical Indication tags (GI tags) offered to the selected food products so that the economic development can be promoted among the locals who are doing business related to kayalpatnam special food items.
Atlast, Kayalpatnam beach is selected by the tamilnadu state goverment as one of the 10 beaches in Tamilnadu to develop the beach area as 'Blue Flag certified beach' offered by an International NGO called FEE along with United Nations bodies.
