    I was kind of surprised that you didn’t say anything about headphones on the guy at 2:40. I’m not sure how he could know when to “dig in” if he isn’t listening.

      It's European style and it was a foreign language video. Many experienced EU boom ops say they can better hear the world on set without headphones so he many be relying on the quiet of set and his ears to judge.

      @@SoundSpeeds I call that “booming by Braille”. That’s very interesting. Every boom op I’ve had this argument with was in fact, European. They say it’s the mixer’s job to listen. I use my eyes to get it roughly in the right place, but if there’s enough time I can hear it when the mic hits the sweet spot and I’ll try to stay there. Especially with something like a Sanken CS3e, where he pickup pattern is surgically sharp. Even an inch seems to make a big difference with that mic. Without ears, I’d be just guessing.
      I just remembered I already commented on this issue on another one of your videos, where I compared it to a cameraman operating without a viewfinder and just pointing the lens in the general direction. My bad. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      You're more than welcome to comment freely as often as you wish. I welcome you. :-)
      I feel it's the sound department's job to listen and advocate for it constantly. You're right, the CS-3E is very precise. It's also one of my favorite mics. Sounds so good!

    I was watching some of your older vidoes. There was one sign off that was particularly good. "Now that's... (i)Sound Advice(i)". That is a killer line. You need to use that.

      Children and animals. The two most difficult things to shoot with on set.

    I’m the worst boom operator because I have torn rotator cuff‘s. I filled in for my friends independent production, so now I have an even greater respect for the art.

      Sorry to hear that. Rotator cuff injuries are no joke.

    As a boom op one time, I had a spotter walking backward through a dirty alley behind camera. If I had fallen it would have been gravel and broken glass for me. Thank God for my spotter.

    • @SoundSpeeds
      @SoundSpeeds  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never replied on spotters but would if there was a safety concern. I usually pretty to navigate everything myself because I'm extremely adaptive on the fly and may change things up.

      @@SoundSpeeds The spotter was kind of spotting me and the DP together in a backward walking train through a very narrow alley. It was kind of impossible for me not to be spotted. LOL.

    • @SoundSpeeds
      @SoundSpeeds  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely ask for one if you need it. It's a safety thing

    I think I prefer watching good boom techniques and occasionally see you rant on bad techniques. So more of the good booming reactions!
    P.S. Zip fizz is tasty and effective. 👍

      I wish three were more good videos online but most people aren't interested in watching sound in BTS video and the better boom operators are on shows with strict rules against on set recording of videos. NDAs and such.

    Allen, hey man! Great video. A totally unrelated question. I have a TLM 103, Aston Spirit, Aston Origin and two Worker Bees. Would it be totally insane of me to go and purchase another WB? I use mics for work (not VO, but getting there), and I see another mic as an investment and a toy. I am not able to articulate my question, but I thought I'd ask. Thank you again, I really like your channel man! Keep up the great work.

    17:50 come on just admit it that you're completely jealous that you've never gotten a horse. I'm jealous and I worked on a western and never got myself onto the horses. I know it's going on my request list for the next movie along with those green M&Ms to make sure they don't skimp on safety when they don't read my contract.

    • @SoundSpeeds
      @SoundSpeeds  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't mind booming from a horse but only to have the experience of doing it

    This is bit off-topic, but I remember you praising that mic you're using in your booth and I cannot recall its name, nor is it mentioned in gear-commonly-used in the description... Mind sharing the name here?
    + this was probably relatively low-effort but ended up still somewhat educational. Good stuff.
