  • Highlights of New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor playing against the Philadelphia Eagles in week 10 of the 1986 season. Prior to the game rumors circulated that Buddy Ryan had placed a bounty on Lawrence Taylor. Just 4 weeks earlier Taylor had shutdown the Eagles offense, recording 4 sacks, 7 QB hits and 11 tackles en route to a 35-3 Giants win.
    Buddy was out for revenge.
    He wouldn't get it.

      I hate listening to that dude so much I sometimes pull up the clips where Artie Lange ruined his show by crapping on him just to get a laugh. The universe still has a way of righting itself. For every Joe Buck it creates, an Artie Lange is born to neutralize.

    When I hear Pat Summerall and John Madden in their prime, it takes me back to a time when life was simple, all of my favorite relatives were still alive, and we’d be at my Aunt’s spacious house in New England where the cousins would throw the ball around at halftime in the freezing cold. My Patriots were awful back then, and were never on TV, and teams had to earn their way to MNF, the only prime time game that existed. So, I probably watched this game.

    I will never forget watching a game between these two teams in Philly, around 1990-91. It's late in the season, and by the 4th quarter it's a blowout in the Giants' favor. Since it was also very cold and windy, a lot of the Philly fans headed out. But the camera, looking for something interesting to show, zeroed in on two guys sitting way up in the nosebleed seats of Veteran's Stadium. Everyone else around them were gone, and these two guys were all bundled up to keep out the cold. You could barely make out their features, except for one of the guys, who had very pronounced jowls. Pat Summerall commented, "Well, apparently former President Richard Nixon is not letting the cold winds force him inside". He and John Madden then talked about how "Now THERE'S a real football fan for you". They commented on Nixon's advancing age and poor health, and the game being a blowout and late in the 4th quarter. Madden even added "I guarantee you he also could have gotten much better seats, but chose to sit way up there. That's a real football fan".
    Whenever I see or hear any clips of those two legendary broadcasters, I think of that fleeting camera shot of an elderly, disgraced ex- President Nixon, huddled against the elements, just trying to watch a game he loved.

I don't think he's "over credited" really. It's true that the 46 needs a middle linebacker with Singletary's instincts & athleticism to maximize it's effectiveness; but at the same time it was under that 46 system that Singletary's natural abilities were best utilized.

    Also, another time, Jaworski called a timeout because he couldn't find where LT was on the field before starting the play... LT wasn't even in on that play... that's how much fear he put into players, especially QB's!

    That play was designed for one purpose, to blindside Taylor; and it was executed perfectly by the offensive lineman #62. Watch it slowly. Nobody blocked Taylor at the line of scrimmage, and 62 shakes off his block and turns back to get Taylor. The Eagles probably hand picked #62 for the assignment because he was their fastest lineman. You can see he looks leaner and more athletic than the typical offensive lineman, he looks more like a linebacker. A normal lineman wouldn't be fast enough to do that. It was a brilliantly conceived play, even though it wasn't designed to get any yards, and it clearly backfired by only serving to piss off Taylor.

    • @ericschroeder8932
      @ericschroeder8932 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great assessment. This is the first time I have watched the play, and noticed the same thing. 62 moved like he probably ran a 4.7 40, and weighed 250 or so. Like they say, do NOT tug on Superman's cape.
