Well this will be my official first opera that I have seen from start to finish. It was recommended as one of 5 to try for people new to opera. The recommendation was correct. The music was upbeat and opera itself was fun along with the word Figaro which I recognized 😉.
Thanks so much for posting. This is an important record of a role she never sang on stage. Her only Rossini role on stage was Semiramide which was quite another thing altogether. She sang it for over 20 years.
Never understood why she didn’t sing Rosina, il Turconin Italia, L’Italiana in Algeria! She was to the manner born, and she was a mezzo in her first career!
@@maxcornise7204 Well, as she herself said, you can't sing everything! Her true glory though were the more dramatic coloratura roles. Bonynge was looking at "La Donna del Lago" I believe but it never happened.
@@fabriziogarzi9892 Thais and Norina were the two roles I believe Bonynge and Sutherland regretted they never had time to tackle. Linda di Chamounix would also have made a fabulous recording but Bonynge said it was unstageable now because of the absurd story! Physically Sutherland could not have played Manon - I'm sure she recognized that fact!
I heard in an interview once that Richards said that although the role of Rosina fitted her like a glove vocally, 'the soubrette does not suit Joan'. (I think I am quoting him correctly.) I suppose he is right, but sometimes casting out of character can work. I think her Rosina is pretty fun dramatically as well as musically. I would have loved her to do Adele in Fledermaus. She almost did in San Diego, but Beverley Sills wasn't able to do the alternation due to commitments. I suppose some things just don't happen and the important thing is to focus on the positives!
"Bubbles" had two severely disabled children,so they understandably came first.Which would account for the fact that she didn't sing much(if at all?) abroad. Our loss in the UK!

I wish she had recorded the complete opera, and Don Pasquale, too¡¡¡
Who’s Afraid Of Opera inspired my channel! Love these! ♥️
Thank you so much for uploading this. This right here is my childhood.

Great singing. These should be made on dvds. But there are a few available on vhs.
Tom was 32 in this clip, and Joan was 46.
Tom is alive and well, and aged 83 ( as of October 2023).
Brava Joan ,Brava Tom McDonnell
Stunning singing by Joan. The others are fine.
26:13 26:20 this has to be one of the most beautiful ensembles ever (even more with Sutherland) It has a very Bellinian melody.

I agree. Adina is also soubrette and suited in her voice perfectly.

@@MrSwifts31 Yes and at the time Sills was transitioning over into management. Her second book is worth reading.
@@danielintheantipodes6741 Thank You Daniel for that info!

The volume is too low.
And that look between that pair of two? Ah? 🤨
