edit: he’s fairly young too but his dependence on the scooter can also kinda ease the 8 miles a bit. Also, if there’s an electric skateboard it could help with transporting it on and off the train but idk if it makes the record invalid because you use a vehicle to assist you.

This is incredibly impressive to me, but it became even more so when he said that he was beating _his own_ record. Wow. Props to this man for accomplishing this task twice.
It may be nullified around dec 2016/Jan 2017 when the new tunnel opens.

Back in the day we used to call that "Doing the system".
But you were not allowed to physically leave the subway to transfer, you had to use in system transfer points.
I think there's a separate record for that.

Congrats on your Achievement!! I've dreamed of doing this for 40+ years, but have never tried. I always thought you had to stay within the subway system and not leave it to run to another station, no one else has ever mentioned doing this before. So... what do you think your time would be if you stayed in the subway completely?

I would argue between unlimited MetroCard and how the London tube challenge works I can make the argument to split it in two, the unlimited division and the one swipe division. I think the one swipe is the fairer test.

Now that phase 1 of the second avenue subway is complete, he has to do it again. And then he'll have to do it for the other 3 phases.
Took me and my friends 25 hours. There were 467 stations then. We also did it on one swipe and never left the system like he did.

Guiness may allow it, but leaving the system does not count. You do the whole system on one fare, one entry, or its bogus. Guiness can put that in its pipe and smoke it.
Hi. I'm writing something about this and am intrigued by the "American version" (not leaving the system) and the "British version" (leaving the system - happens all the time in London). Why is there such dislike of the latter?
As far as I know, the first few record holders did not leave the system. The Amateur New York Subway Riding Committee was set up by some fellow riders in the mid-1960s to determine some rules for competition, one of which was that leaving the system was not allowed. However, the co-founder and record administrator moved away from the New York area in the early 1970s and had nothing more to do with the Committee. It has not functioned for a long time since then. Some time later, Guinness took up the reins.
The no-exit rule has been followed rather strenuously since, and it's only in recent years that it has been ignored. But there's never been a definitive way of doing it, because there were also three different versions (records) of covering the system according to the ANYSRC: Classes A, B and C.
Class A involved riding on every section of track at least once. For Class B, one had to stop at every station, but not necessarily cover every section of track. For Class C, one had to travel on every line, but not stop at every station; some could be bypassed with express trains when possible. Class C was essentially travelling to both ends of every line but it didn't matter how one did it; if an A train had gone non-stop between Rockaway and Inwood, that would have counted.
Naturally, because Class C took the least amount of time, I believe most record hopefuls used that variant. I've only found one attempt that was apparently a Class A under ANYSRC rules, and none for Class B. The whole thing was unequal. There was no point in comparing a Class A holder with a Class C one. If the subway were a 400m race, Class A would start at 400m, Class B at 375m and Class C at 300m. Furthermore, Class B required stopping at complexes on every serving line (which would be 469 stations today), and Class C only required you to stop on one line (424).
The Guinness record is the equivalent of the Class B, and I think it's the fairest way of judging it, because each station is a unit of measurement for traversing the system. Allowing system exits might be frowned upon, but that's Guinness's version, and it does give the option of staying in. As there was no prior 469-station holder, Matthew could stayed in, but why would he do that and restrict himself to a slower time?
ANYSRC was never an official body. Guinness is. ANYSRC themselves said that it was impossible to come up with rules to the agreement of everyone, hence the Classes. Guinness has at least tried to do the best it can, and they give options. They would accept no-exit records, but there would come a point at which one could go any faster without exiting. If one were desperate enough for the title to exit, it would become a Guinness-only record thereafter.
If you didn't want to exit, you'd have to attempt the record as soon after a new station opens as possible. I will accept, however, that this approach could be considered unfair towards those who don't. One can disagree with Guinness's guidelines, of course, but to dismiss an achievement adhering to them is a bit unnecessary.
All these are just interpretations, and there are many more. A couple went to every station in Manhattan only, alighted, took a selfie and jumped back on. Some people don't personally consider the system done until they have alighted a train and boarded a different one at the same station. In London, where exiting the system is prevalent, there are dozens of partial challenges based on everything from the names of stations to the shapes on the map, and they can be as competitive as the whole network.
It's all subjective. No organisation or individual owns this activity, including Guinness, and I don't think anyone can say that any way of doing it is "bogus".

@@directionoftravel6172 Sorry for the curt answer. It's late and I'm tired. This is a subject more suited to discussion over a glass of beer. Or two. Or stout -- I like Guinness, for drinking, if not for reading. I am not interested in sports, and never have been. I was in the band in high school -- to me, football was something they did before and after the band show Friday nights in the fall. To be concerned about hundredths of a second when someone has run a marathon strikes me as somewhat silly. Besides, the length of the Marathon today has changed from the race in 1896. There may be an asterisk by the record. Don't know. Not even interested enough to look it up.
It's just my feeling that if you're going to ride the subway, you need to cover all publicly available lines, but not necessarily every track. The rules may be different for other systems; New York has many unique qualities, in the 24/7/365 service, the single fare regardless of distance or time, the complexity of routings, the number of stations. In Chicago and Boston, there were and may still be termini where you MUST leave the system, and another fare required to continue. It's not really possible to make comparisons between systems.
And as for getting off at each station and taking the next train -- sheesh. In New York that would take days!
@@directionoftravel6172 Before 1996 (unlimited metrocards) that was the quickest/least expensive way and guinness didn't quite have the stranglehold it does now.
Would Guinness allow someone to take a bike between stations, or do you have to go on foot between stations like he did? If not, clearly someone could pick up an hour on that 8 mile walk/run just by bringing a folding bike.

Maybe instead of being the record holder for all the train lines, he could just be the "fastest for 469 (or whatever number he chooses) stations" since something is always opening up. It will allow him to actually hold the record for a few years especially when the L train goes down and he can't attempt the record during that time.

Impressive. But I am not convinced this took much more effort than running around between stations. Traveling is exhausting but does this make him a efficient subway rider for everyday use? Then this is really impressive.

Planning the route can take months of schedule review, and trackwork announced only a few days prior can force an entire rerouting of your planned route.

HVAC Guy That’s the Staten Island railway. It is not connected to the subway system, so no subway lines can run on it and it’s trains must be trucked over to Coney Island Yard for heavy maintenance.

Dude, this is NY in the summer time we're talking about. The temperatures can go up to 90 degrees in NY you know, and sometimes in a occasion of a heatwave temperatures go up to 100 degrees. NY ain't in Antarctica. NY only gets cold weather like that in the winter, not all year around.
Hells Wind Well the transportation in NY is actually called the MTA (which stands for Metropolitan Transportation Authority). And yes, it does go outside as well as being underground too. Especially in the new tech trains, it is nice being in them during the heat cause they have AC's. However the heat only lasts from June to early September. Throughout the rest of the year it's either warm, lukewarm, or cold. I've lived in Los Angeles (still do now but I'm planning on moving back to New York) and let me tell you, the heat here is way worse than in NY. I'm not much on a heat person so I don't enjoy it all that much. One time during the summer the temperature got up to 120 degrees and unfortunately due to climate change, it's bound to get hotter each passing year. BUT the good thing is that in LA it gets as low as 40 degrees in the winter.

awesomely big cities with evolving 'problems', call for new innovative measures, ones we haven't witnessed before as things that tend to change do that in a rather drastic, rather _dramatic_ fashion... I mean big cities, so called metropolis (and probably beyond) have been known to have 'issues' which came by but also were resolved... due to ingenuity and engineering.
We, everywhere need to 'roll' with the times, or we'll surely be 'left behind'... I mean I can't even imagine the World as is now, compared to how it used to be just seems... 'everything' seemed to be so much simpler in a sense.
With these changing times there seems to be no end to 'progress' (which has its 'toll') and who knows what the future might bring, one thing comparing times with _before_ is that; we, as people always seemed to manage.
So I take it, in time, that this will be 'no issue'. At least; _I hope._
