Keys to Success for a Flip Cup:
1. One of the great things about a flip cup pour for beginners is that consistency is not as important. If you want cells and clearly defined colors and lines, your mixed paints should be on the thick side - it should leave a trace when drizzled off of your stir stick and should leave a mound on a mound. If you want more blending of colors and fewer cells, the consistency should be a little thinner, still leaving a small mound but disappearing quickly. For this pour, my consistency was on the thicker side.
2. You can layer your paints in the cup in several ways: layered by pouring down the edge of your cup, 'dirty' layered by pouring the colors into the cup from up high so that they mix rather than layer on top of each other, or sandwiched between layers of white like I've done here. Each creates a slightly different look.
3. HOW TO FLIP YOUR CUP: Hold the cup firmly in your hand - one finger under the bottom and the rest gripping the sides. Don't squeeze - just hold firmly. Tuck your elbow against your ribs, count to three (or any number you choose) and then twist your wrist quickly and flip the cup onto the canvas. If your cup isn't too full, there shouldn't be too much splatter. It's not a big problem if you get some splatter, but less paint in the cup means less interaction between the colors.
4. Once your cup is flipped and resting on the canvas, you can drag the cup towards you as you release it, lift straight up to release the paint in one big puddle, or use a push pin to poke a hole in the cup to allow the air pressure to push the paint out.
5. A lot of paint gets tilted off, so if you are like me and do not like to be wasteful, scrape up your runoff and use it again!
7. If there is a section that you're not happy with or if you want to create additional motion - swipe the lip of your cup through it! You can also use your finger, a palette knife, a paper towel or flat piece of plastic or anything you like. Flip cups have lots of layers of paint, so every time you swipe, you will expose colors underneath that create great visual interest.
8. The KEY TO CELLS WITHOUT SILICONE: Layer metallic colors between non-metallics. Metallic paints are less dense than regular tube paints, so as the paints settle on the canvas, the metallics will rise through the non-metallics as cells. It's also important to WAIT before you tilt - especially with thicker consistency paints. I waited about 3 minutes after pouring to start moving the paint around. And stretch slowly, always moving back to center before changing direction to help your cells hold their shape.
Colors Used:
Amsterdam Titanium White
Amsterdam Greenish Blue
Amsterdam Turquoise Green
Amsterdam Primary Yellow
Amsterdam Vermillion
Liquitex Basics Deep Violet
My pouring medium is equal parts Floetrol, PVA Glue and Gloss Varnish. Mixed 3 parts pouring medium to 1 part paint, and then thinned with distilled water. There was no silicone in this pour.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!! The movement is so very soothing & calming. Thank you, especially for the extra work you put into composing the full description of your tutorials. You're very generous to share your talent!!!❤🙏🙏❤
I definitely see a sunset over hills, with the purple road coming towards you. Beautiful! ♥
So pretty 🤩 don’t you just love flip cups❤❤
Wow Nate! This is beautiful. The water at the bottom is amazing as on the right side I can see a large fishes head, mouth open and a big long pointed top lip! The colours are just stunning. Yep it's a winner! Love to you and hubby xxxx
I think this is stunning~ The colors are rich and the contrast is gorgeous. It reminds me of a road leading to the lake during the evening sunset. Thank you for teaching me so much.
This is sooo good!!! Excelent!
Shenadoah sunset 🌇 😍
I lovvveeeee it!😘
ooooh I love how the colors are gradient. I love flip cups. It's always fun going back to the beginning or back to the basics. Very pretty. 😍
Thanks Brian!
I think it's beautiful Nate and I look forward to seeing the next version!
I see a road leading off into the sunset over the rolling hills. It's gorgeous!
Firstly, I would like to thank you, for all the time, energy and effort you put into typing all the information, you have in your description box. I have always found it incredibly helpful.
Secondly, even though this is not exactly what you were going for, I do love this piece, from your colour palette to the composition. It is definitely very galaxy looking. I do hope you do this again, as it would be interesting to see the difference between both pieces, just by giving the paint, time for bubbles to pop. Thanks Nate, love and blessings from Australia ♥️🙏♥️
Thanks Fiona! I'm glad people are finding the written tutorial helpful too. People learn in different ways, so it's great to offer both the video and the text. And yes! I am DEFINITELY doing this again - I love these colors and the effect... Thanks again!
This looked like water colors, so much depth of shades ! I like all the little baby cells. I was thinking too dang not enough paint ! Great job dear 💕💕🐣
Yes - I forgot that you need more paint than you think for flip cups. More paint next time!
I see a sunset landscape over water with a water spout. I like it! Very vibrant!
Thanks so much Rebecca! XOXOXO
Pretty
I am watching with no sound at the moment and will re-watch when I can but this is fabulous.!I truly can't believe your results. If you had told me a landscape could be painted with flip cups I wouldn't have believed you. Definitely next level stuff Nate. Just gorgeous ! It would look great over My drafting table- he he he
Thanks Bobbie! I bet it WOULD look good over your drafting table... LOL Happy holidays!
Beautiful, bright colors in this, Nate! Very pretty result with the layering. Well done! 💖
Thanks Cath!
I understand that this is not exactly what you wanted but this piece is spectacular! I love the vibrancy of your palette. I've been thinking a lot about what you said in Dallas about saying yes to everything that presented itself last year. It shows in your work and your willingness to learn from and trust yourself. You always find a way to view your art with loving eyes even if your outcome is not exactly what you envisioned. You continue to inspire me my friend.💗
Thanks again Elayne! I'm working on my focus for next year... I think 2023 is going to be the year of collabs - I want to work with and learn from as many other artists as possible. If you get your channel started... we could collaborate! Let's DO IT!! XOXOXOXO
This is gorgeous as is Nate. I can also understand that you were looking for cleaner smoother look. When the next one is dry I think they would look awesome on a wall together side by side. This is a stunning piece and look forward to see "Sunset Bay`s" twin. Absolutely STUNNING. Namaste🙏🥰
Thanks Tam! I'll post the video for the second one next week so we can compare
Beautiful Nate. Love the abstract in this ❤
Thanks Lori!
I really love the cells but I understand your goal as well. Can't wait to see that one! I think they would be great side by side as well.
Thanks Nancy! I should have the video out next week so we can compare. Happy holidays!
Love this! ❤
Thanks Donna! Happy New Year!
I’d torch for maximum cells as if intentional. Then on the 2nd one with less you have a yin/yang of palette and technique. Fabulous as is.
Thanks SJ!
Very beautiful.
Thank you Cat! 😊
Air bubbles cells or not, I think it's beautiful Nate 😍💕
Thanks Julie Eeeeeee!
I know, I'm sooo out of season, but this Santa thing was Superb!! How did you do it?
Love your creation, air bubbles and everything. Cheers from up (very...up) North.
