    Wow. This was an eye-opener for me. Almost ashamed of saying so since I should have known better since a rather experienced hobby gardener. But this misconception of fertilizers being food for plants is rather widespread.

      it's absolutely nothing to be ashamed of; I'm a horticulturist and I only found out while studying for my qualification that Seasol and similar kelp extract products are not actually fertilisers, they're more like a boost for the plant. like drinking juice instead of having a meal. we learn new things constantly, and if we didn't, there would be no fun in it 🤷‍♀️

    Agreed! Most organic potting mixes I find have mold issues. Sometimes they kill the roots of the newer cuttings planted in them. I don't have a oven to sterilize them, so I use copper fungicide, but really I'm looking for a cheap and easier solution. Pumice is not widely available nearby.

    Thank you so much for this eye opener on Fertilizers. You have dispelled most of my misconception in this matter. You guys are crystal clear in your info and that is what I like and I take every word of yours with utmost respect. Now I need your advice on how to detox my Schefflera, which I think I've overfertilized (healthy leaves are dropping off), though not by commercial fertilizers but by vermicompost.

    I'd like another tip video on this subject. Fertilize according to the text on the bottle. Ok, but which plants want less than that? I guess Orchids, anthuriums, and cacti. Any other? Should those have halft the amount and/or should they have less frequently?

  • @watcher33333
    @watcher33333 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here fertilizing grains are used. You put them in the soil (on top). During watering a little bit is giving to the plant. Easy to use and cheaper than the liquid kind.

    Can I change my monstera deliciosa soil cuz I think my monstera is getting black spots from too much soil cuz the pot is bigger than the plant, nevertheless it has so many earthworms and those worms do not look good at home. The current medium has been used is sand, but I want to grow it into coco peat+perlite+pumice.
    Should I change its soil?

    Could you please comment on what organic matter fertilizers are in usable form for indoor plants as opposed to those which would rely on microorganisms to break down? So, for instance, obviously raw compost materials would not break down - but how about compost tea? Or fermented nettle juice? Or earthworm castings? How about seaweed extract? Thanks in advance!

    • @gayefanner731
      @gayefanner731 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’v used compost,nettle n comfrey teas for 50 years in horticulture but as the strength is so variable only outdoors or glasshouse/poly tunnels.in pots proprietary brand liquid seaweed is best in every way 👌

    I can’t tell you how many times I hear plant TH-camrs saying to fertilize your plants “every week”. That doesn’t strike me as sensible, since plants don’t require fertilizer in nature. If you are paying close attention to their needs, that should keep them fairly healthy. Fertilizer is not a panacea. It’s not a replacement for giving them the proper light, the right amount of water, and oxygen. It doesn’t make up for the most common problems, like overwatering. Why would a houseplant plant need fertilizer every week??

    Informative as always. You guys rock. I wonder if you recommend any specific fertilizer mix. Seaweed? I have compost pellets that gradually release nutrients when I water and they seem to be working well.
    Unrelated, but I'm still trying to find out what kind of clay is mixed with your pumice for planting in pumice. I would like to go to that mixture but unsure how to proceed.
    Love your longer videos too! Don't stop making those!!!
