First Story: I would have deleted them too, since I dont want to get in legal trouble.
Thought the same, maybe even getting it in writing that it was their decision to delete the data in case they come back in the future claiming this or that.

First story is typical corporate policies of firing experienced, dedicated employees * bringing in new employees because they can pay entry level wages and no vacation time.
The first story doesn't even sound like MALICIOUS compliance. The poster repeatedly warned against it and offered alternatives. They were not given any choice but to comply (any other course of action could actually have resulted in charges being brought against them).
Story 1: It took the company 6 months before realizing they made a mistake? 6 months to realize a huge problem? Wow
They would have had a chance for the experienced worker to come back if they reached out to them sooner. Even if they reached out sooner it probably wouldn't have helped anyway because they let go one of their most valuable employees. By letting a valuable employee go, that tells the employee that the company doesn't value them
Six months doesn't surprise me. You could buy yourself time by explaining the old employee separated and the new one needs time to catch up. When you have somebody that high up the food chain calling you directly, it is bad. Probably lawsuit level bad. And the mid level manager who made these calls probably did so thinking he/she was making a cost cutting decision that would get them some short term bonus or recognition.
To be honest, I feel for the college grad. He went from entry level position to senior program developer at entry level pay. It wouldn't surprise me if the OP didn't get the honest story. The first graduate bailed once he/she realized they were over their head and this is the second graduate who now didn't even get a proper turn over. For most people it takes years (if not decades) of experience to get to this level of program writing. The OP in this story is basically the guy who builds the foundation for the home, and then hands it off to an entire team to flesh out and make it complete. If the foundation sucks, it don't matter whether or not the plumbing is right, the electrical, or the walls are set square. If the foundation crumbles the rest will too.
Fax. That is why some managers absolutely lose it when they have to make a decision that cuts into the amount they are paid. They'll cut anyone (even great quality employees) to save a couple hundred dollars.
Need I mention that most management positions pay more than employees make in their entire lives. Employees won't get anywhere unless they somehow manage to kiss up to management for a higher up position
I think managers need to have some kind of business/management experience before they are allowed to be signed on to the company. Employees need experience too, so why does management not need it?

S1: Something similar happened in my previous job when they eliminated my position to save costs. They told me that when I retire, I will format the pc as standard procedure. The next day they called me desperate for some control sheets and I told them that I deleted everything as they said, I did not take anything or leave them anything, since the sheets were my own and a way in which I controlled my daily progress, it was not something of the company .
You must have different laws or contracts than I have in my country.
In my previous jobs there was a clause in the contract saying that anything developed by an employee on company property during company time belongs to the company. If had deleted any of the spreadsheets or databases i created to do my work in my previous job, I could have been sued for data loss.
@@steves1015 sounds like he was told to format his pc. So in that case he's just following orders. It's not his responsibility to warn the management, especially when his position is being eliminated, he can argue that he thought the company no longer needs the data.
Story two: I've been on the flip side of having to request swipe access to multiple buildings... After the 3rd round of changing my access, someone must have just given up as I now have 24x7 access at all buildings. I didn't even think of this until we returned from lockdown and I had to swipe my coworkers in.
Basically the Girlfriend tries her hardest to make him feel smart and instead of being grateful he tries his hardest to make her feel stupid and doesnt expect her to prove him wrong.
Is it girlfriend, it could always be a gay couple. However, computers always play games better than humans, I have realized.

Nah, computers can do a lot of things better than people, but they can't strategize for shit. In virtually any strategy game (outside of purely mathematical games, like chess), humans will generally come out on top, overall. Because humans have one thing that even the most advanced AI we have can't mimic: creativity.

The management was totally wrong for the situation they placed themselves in for firing the programmer that worked in all the coding.
The programmer did the best thing he could by listening to them and deleting the files because yes it’s true if he kept them he could have sold it to the company but if he told them he had actually saved them (just incase) but if the new management was petty not wanting to pay they could file a lawsuit because it was technically a breach of contract and considered theft of property because the company was paying him to do the programming for them.
He did the best thing possible and saved himself from trouble. It was his codes so he could maybe duplicate it but with only the source codes the data will be the most time consuming to replicate.
New management will never learn and continue ruining business that had spent years building.

In my line of work we take progression reports.
Of someone decided to take the reports they had made with them they're in violation of a bunch of stuff.
I can't let old employees hold that data for a bunch of reasons.
Dude was right to delete it and offer the access to the data.
It wasn't his job to ensure data backups and makes them available.
Thats just bad management not to ensure.
He literally had to buy the drives on his own dime to do his job properly because they had no clue about any of it and that was an "Unnecessary expense" in their corporate eyes. He went above and beyond even offering to sell them the drives after he was unjustly fired, they didn't see the importance of it. I'd have wiped them without reminding them that "Yea, all this shit is super important"
For story 1, i'm baffled that the company, in this day and age, didn't/hasn't set up their own server to backup the data for their software and another for the clients' data... It's the most basic thing anyone with any IT background would do!
Sometimes business owners and/or managers don't understand their job and are extremely lucky to have employees that do know and literally make the business stay on float.

Exactly. I used to work for a finance company and we had to scan individual contracts onto the computer. I had to back up each day's work onto the back up discs. It's essential to do this in case something happens to the docs on the computer.
Well, i hope the guy's from Story 2 installed a system that detects the key card and recognizes who the owner of this card is plus saving it on a server to recall who went where and when
I don't know if that's possible. The system must have been simple: you have doors with codes to let access, you have cards that store codes for the doors they have access.
We don't know if OP is a tech expert or if they are willing to hire someone to do what you are suggesting.
Unfortunately many businesses tend to undervalue computer related stuff even if their business is computer related (see story 1).

Data Protection. I worked as a contractor for a certain telephone company in the UK for a number of years. There was a swipe card system in each of the buildings dotted all over the country and these cards were issued to each person and you weren't allowed to lend your card to anyone. in other words they knew exactly when and where if anyone entered one of their buildings.
Then there was a huge push to bring the country broadband up to speed with every other country so this is where we came in. For each site there was approx 10-15k metres of multipair copper cabling and lots of other ancillaries delivered a few days before we turned up but problems arose when we began noticing that the cable was missing from a lot of the sites. It turns out that someone on the inside knew exactly which sites had deliveries and when they could get in there before us. These guys were turning up with trucks in the middle of the night and stealing the cable a day or 2 before we arrived.
The police were informed and they turned up CSI style looking for finger prints etc but when I enquired about why they couldn't trace who had accessed the buildings on the nights in question via the swipe cards I was told that the company couldn't release these details because of the data protection laws in the UK.
I heard that the guy was eventually caught but this was long after we'd finished our contract. This was probably 10 years ago now but it's crazy to think these stupid laws were even causing havoc back then.
Those "Access Trackers" were like in the movies such as "Transformers: Age of Extinction" and Arnold Schwarzenegger's "The 6th Day".

I worked for a well-known company for over two years. They decided it was time to hire an off-shore developer to save money and told me I had to train him. My attitude is this -- if I choose to leave, then it's up to me to train my replacement. But if it's NOT my choice, I flat REFUSE to train a replacement. So I put off the "training" meetings as long as I could, and when my last week arrived and they were threatening to end me a week early, I took the last week off sick since I had accrued sick time.
That Last story, some people just have really big egos and they're also living in denial.
I got a call once from a former manager, I laughed, told her my last day was last week, reminded her she hadn't seen me in days, and cracked a beer.

That happens when you don't understand your business. It's pretty common for people with money ( either inherited or hard worked but from another field) to start a business and happen to get a good team from the start to be able to let them do all the work, it can work out pretty well if they keep their employees with them somehow.
It was obvious that they didn't know how the business worked because they didn't have hard drives for backups. They were very lucky to have an employee that actually cared for the company.

I don't know if boss knows her business but at least she values her good employees.
All of my exes have had their knowledge and experiences in such different fields from me that a comparison between us has never been an issue. I wonder how I would have acted in a similar situation. I only say that because I am competitive.
The first one isn't the jerk. He offered to sell them the drives with the data. If he had kept the data on his drives they probably would have sued his pants off.
The first story is both the definition of cutting corners and you get what you pay for meaning cheaper is not always better.
I requested two weeks off to a manager I never saw since the day he hired me. We were a day shift and a night shift and the whole department manager was only there for half the day shift cuz he had a second job, taking advantage of a full time salary working less than part time. I never got a reply on my vacation request. All my coworkers who know how the place works just told me to take it. So I did. I come back 2 weeks later, and I'm off all the schedules. Dude had the balls to say I was denied, but Itold him to his face you're a bad manager and I haven't seen you since the day you hired me, you are never here, always at your other job!! (I think we was scared I'd go over his head to blab what he was/wasn't doing) So I got to keep my job. he left like a month later anyway.

NTJ, Management told the OP repeatedly to comply with their instruction even after the OP informed them of consequences. OP tried to be honest forthcoming and helpful but management did what management did.

Most people seem to be intiminated by sudoku. I've also been playing it for years and it's just based on patterns. I find it great for ralaxing too.

Story 1: I can understand here. I Always like it if I have access to everything. It's not that I would need it, but it gives me a great feeling to know that I could do everything.
First story I would have make some ridiculous offer to come back. Something like a 50% pay increase current job and some clause in the contract to make it costly to ever let me go.
Story 2: I would make the building bankrupt and sneakily get away if this was a situation in GTA

I hope I'm in a position where I can just quit my job and be fine. I've had a-hole managers that knew I needed my job so they used me. It was fun when I put in my two weeks though. Funny how talks of pay increase and position titles started after I told them I was leaving. The best part was their faces when I declined their offers for more money than I was going to make at my new job. I was running an entire shipping department by myself working 10-12 hours, sometimes more, 6 days a week for $13.50 an hour.
Because they could get away with it.
Sometimes employees do it for the experience but it's not ok to let them exploit you.

story 1: nope. i did a small bit of IT myself and we got issued our personal 64gb thumb drives. but i did have one case of DELETE MY EMAIL or drive or whatever its kinda hazy. the woman then returned FURIOUS. i cannot access my netflix nor youtube anymore what the hell did u do? and i was like u told me to fully get rid of it. i even helped set up a new google mail. thats it. my boss was like... well u did listen closely what she said and i was there to confirm. she even wanted to sue our company :D but had 0 footing to stand on.
I always save everything I do in my work in my personal cloud, for experiencie I know I will need It later or someone will call me asking for that thing. There is no such thing as "delete" in any industry

It all ended well but I gotta be honest with the Sudoku, there is no jerk, there's just rivalry. Rivalry actually pushes you beyond your limits, in this case the ex to start becoming smarter at Sudoku when he starts going on harder difficulty in the future just like my dad and I in Pacman.
Not in the Master Key situation, but I do have an access card, only because I've been working at my job since before they seemed to have changed the policy. I've noticed that newer hires at the same level as me don't seem to get these (since they were often left waiting for someone to open the door for them). Of course I'm not going to bring it up to my current boss, and my previous supervisor is cool and doesn't care.
This new policy has actually backfired, from a security standpoint. Now all the rank and file employees (and even my old supervisor) crack the door open, because people got tired of having to let people in all the time. Classic case of management changing things that were fine before, and making whatever problem they imagined they had worse (or creating a whole new worse problem). This has been going on for over a year now, I think, and about 95% of the time the door is left partly open.
It doesn't lead to a special area of the business (technically employees only, but not a sensitive area. Anyone could get there from a publicly accessible door that's never locked). It definitely could be a problem in the event of an armed robbery, though only the difference between whether someone is willing to break a glass door or not.

I like smart people but I prefer not so smart people to smart people who are too eager to show they're smart. Sudoku is one of my favorite games. I'm decent at it.
I do not know why but the job of programmer seem to be the most underestimate job. If you are smart enough to program, become a mecanic instead. The hours and the paid is better now.
Unlikely to be the case in North America. Salaries for IT range 50k~200k while mecanics is 35k~100k.

I doubt the sudoku one as an avid sudoku player keying in the numbers on the harder one takes a little over a minute even if you knew the Oder ahead of time I think my best time was 90 seconds and that was just because I got really good at seeing patterns in sudoku chess any normal sudoku would take more than a minute just putting numbers in unless it’s 90% completed.
First story is just compliance. No malicious intentions whatsoever. What happened as a result is not out of revenge or anything, they told him what to do and he did it. He did not even alter any request they made. They did it to themselves

I had automated my job a few years ago and the company found out. That code could not only do my job but the job of my entire team and possibly the whole of my division if given enough hardware resources. They DEMANDED that I give them the code after the found out and fired me. I offered them to purchase the software from me. For quite cheap mind you. They declined....and that is why, I am willing to bet. You all hate the tech support of a MAJOR ISP
Here you sign contracts stating anything written on company computer or written during company time is owned by said company. Refusing here would just get a lawsuit against you to turn it over. If it is deleted monetary judgements can be made against you.

1st story: Well the people of the company were not smart, but it makes sense to not let people leave with data.
And they were jerks for not valuing the people they had.
2nd story: nothing to say.
3rd story: wonderful story.
4th story: OP was a little bit of a jerk, but not enough for me to think anything bad about her, everyone does something like that sometimes.

I would have just let him have the win and forgotten about the matches. He was being petty and she just brought herself down to his level by doing more puzzles and screen shooting them to him. Why bother. It was just a stupid game after all. But she could have texted him and said he had it on the easiest setting so it wasn't surprising that he had a good score which would have let him know she knew she was still better at the game.
Kind of had this happen to me won't really go into the details and make my comment super long but as long as the vacation request doesn't overlap with too many from your department you have the time saved up there should be no question that you should get the time off I mean it's for a wedding and honeymoon. But yeah I would have done the same thing I would have given my notice and walked.
As to the last story unfortunately the only thing that comes to mind is I think he is using his manpower not quite sure what you would call it ego maybe in comparison to her and because she can beat the pants off of him he feels the emasculated I'm also assuming the guys of a older generation okay now I'm going to slip back into the shadows.

Soduku dude's got a fragile ego. He never learned to be a good sport. Winning is great, but losing builds character, provides more opportunities for growth and self-betterment.
For the key card I think the card acctully broke before this trip and she said fix it he git her master key card on accident and she tried to do it again but for all rooms and everything

I mean in the second story
I feel for the company that lost the data. I would have attempted to retrieve the files via data recovery and charged them accordingly. me personally I would have simply kept the files and not deleted them knowing that I would have received this call eventually is it against policy Yes but do I work there anymore no so who cares, then when I get the call I know is coming I would say well you made me delete the files but I can recover them possibly but it will cost some money I would then sell them the drives and charge a fee for the "recovery" throw in some additional billing for training my replacement.
If they found out, you'd risk very big legal trouble, specially if it had data of clients.
