      Mayank Dubey years of neglect are now taking their toll. Mig 21 is a fine plane but without maintenance and repair and replacement of spare parts even a F22 will fail. We have lost so many pilot's. But still we can't just remove these planes as our nos will then critically drop. Sanctioned strength for the air force is 45 squadrons and currently we are down to only 31 squadrons. 45 are minimal required for both Pakistan and Chinese aggression. If we remove Mig 21 and Mig 27 the squadrons will drop to 21 which is alarmingly low, till replacement comes these will carry on. Best option would be to ramp up nos for Sukhoi 30 and even Mig 29. Present government is doing it's best. Funds are also an issue. But clearly lot more needs to be done. Meet had extreme confidene and a strong bond with his Mig 21 unfortunately the same plane took its life. Mig 21 is a 3rd generation plane and though it's been through tremendous upgrades it's still a very demanding plane.

      Cyrus Loves India The pattern keeps repeating itself 😣. Sadly, what you said about our operational squadron strength falling drastically short is also true. We can never let our strength fall that low without finding replacements on time. What about the LCA? When will it be inducted in full numbers like No. 45 Sqn already has? Are we going for the Mk2 version directly or is that still long ways away?
      What do you think about buying F-16s to meet the demand, independent of the MMRCA contract? It is also a single engine, light, highly reliable and proven airframe with modern radar, avionics and weapons systems.
      I know there are a lot of practical challenges involved, but as a stop-gap solution at least, could it work? We can then sell/lease out our airframes to other friendly countries after the situation is under control. Sounds like a doable idea at least?
      Also, the west German Air force (post WW2 Luftwaffe) also had the same problem with their then new F-104 starfighters. Many young pilots perished on training missions. They then reined it in, would be interesting to note how they solved their problem.

    • @mayank884
      @mayank884 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The IAF rolled out a tender for 126 MMRCA in 2007 its more than a decade now but only 36 Rafale have been ordered. These aircrafts are so expensive that it will slow down our Government's development agenda . Now they are planning for MMRCA 2 with the same aircrafts in fray as some media report suggests . So much delay

    • @cyruslovesindia
      @cyruslovesindia 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Red tap-ism and bureaucracy are killing our armed forces preparedness. We should as an immediate step increase nos of Mig 29 and Su30mki and Tejas should now be the replacement for Mig 21. Many black sheep in our establishment dont want Tejas to succeed as it lessens their chances of kickbacks. Present government hopefully will not let Tejas wither away. Navy and air force both should induct Tejas in huge nos. Sceptical abt the F16 as its now a 40 year old plane and a completely different platforms to our Russian weapons.

      @Shukriyadhan the mig 21 had flares. I'm unsure that if these had. As far I know the Bis variant did. About the mid air refueling : this aircraft is so focused on speed that considering it has to travel slow cargo fuel plane speeds to refuel it would make it really unstable to controll it.

    Mig 21 have a flaw due to the poor placement of the internal fuel tanks ahead of the centre of gravity. As the internal fuel was consumed, the center of gravity would shift rearward beyond acceptable parameters. This had the effect of making the plane statically unstable to the point of being difficult to control, resulting in an endurance of only 45 minutes in clean condition. This can be somewhat countered by carrying fuel in external tanks closer to the center of gravity.
    Due to relationship sour during the 1960s, the Russian didn't give China all the technical data, forcing the Chinese to reverse engineer the Mig21. In the reverse engineering process, they discovered the fatal flaw and fixed the design.
    The Chinese Mig 21 variants (J-7/F-7) improved the internal fuel tank layout and also carry significantly larger external fuel tanks to counter this issue. Additionally, when more than half the fuel was used up, violent maneuvers prevented fuel from flowing into the engine, thereby causing it to shut down in flight. This increased the risk of tank implosions (MiG-21 had tanks pressurized with air from the engine's compressor), a problem inherited from the MiG-15, MiG-17 and MiG-19.
    If HAL didn't fix the flaw, the accident rates will be high.

    It's unstable at low speeds and buffets like crazy during landing if you don't go at stupidly high speeds. Also it can't maneuver like anything built after the 60s. Also it doesn't have guns so you have to carry external gun pods.
    But it can carry nukes.

      Blazdur the Ridiculously Named
      The later variants do have guns and yes, the bis can carry the rn-24. And it's pretty nible for something initially designed as a straight interceptor, but still a pretty straight example of an energy fighter. It doesn't like low speeds at all...

    It might be obsolete now but it was a force to be reckoned with back in the day. During Vietnam War USA was desperate to get its hands on one so that they could reverse engineer this and find out why it was a great aircraft.

    People who are calling it flying coffins have no idea the reasons behind it. Russian defination of low maintenance is it's easy to repair. Hence they don't have long service lives as they believe why make something perfect (be good enough) when it's going to be destroyed when shooting starts ie planned obsolescence. While IAF is a force who have the highest training sortie rate even when compared to USAF and USN. We fly training mission more than them. So this results in russian aircraft reaching end of their service life quite fast. While in western aircraft the defination of low maintenance is make something failure proof so the time between maintenance is quite long. IAF is a force with western tactics but with russian equipment. It doesn't use aircraft like missile trucks under the constant control of GCI but uses that and AWACS to set up kill chains. The problem lies with HAL which doesn't try to improve the service life of airframes by improving materials and construction techniques sticking with design data given by the Russians for licensed production, even the J7 the Chinese version of MIG 21 has improvements in from the start of its domestic production. When IAF upgraded Mig 21 to bison it needed engine upgrade, cft like in f16, a new wing platform and separate nose and side air intake basically an enlarged ftc2000.

      @theutubeid so sad still today u have no idea what happened with IAF two jet planes only because of Indian media - IAF second jet fighter fall down in India occupied Kashmir - ur own media was showing wreckage of Mig 21 in IOK but funny part is they were calling it Pakstani f-16- ur own defence analysis exposed false claim of Indian air force he said that these are images of Mig-21 wreckage not not F-16 because of its diamond pattern shape - u can watch that video clip in my channel - visit my channel and watch that video of ur own media channel
