Thought of this, too. I (sometimes) carry one in addition to pepper spray/folding knife/expandable baton--depending on where I'm going. I like the ellipse-shaped (both ends shaped the same) type with the turnable locking nut on one side--makes it solid. They are a LOT easier on the hand to punch with than brass knuckles.
I used to carry a horse shoe in my back pocket. But the carabiner in the shape of an " 0 " that home depot has with the screw closure is real nice. Won't crush your hand.
I have been carrying my keys like this for years. I travel quite a bit and sometimes I can’t carry anything else. It allows me to stay within the rules and still be able to have options to defend myself
Loved the steel clip knuckles. Just happened to have a pair of the same steel 4" clips on my work bench and tried out right away on heavy bag with excellent results! Thanks!
@@Xonid1 i don't think you can. i think the only way to keep it from rolling is to get an appropriate sized carbine, so the thickness of your hand makes the carbine fit snug. i think this is why Matt kept talking about the size of his hands. since he has big thick hands it's snug to his fist.
Really enjoy your video’s. Using things most people wouldn’t even think of are excellent. When I go into places I make it a point to look for exits, potential weapons and scour the room for potential bad actors. Trying always of being aware of my surroundings. My kids always say I overreact but mindset is important and always being aware of things around me. Good teaching and thank you!
Brillant ❤ i so want to learn to use the shillelagh. Im Irish, living in all my life, can never find classes ect no matter how much i google 😅 thanks so much for your video's they are brilliant
So to be clear I have an other comment that has been challenged by some viewers so I did some checking. New Hampshire requires a concealed weapon permit and four other states allow brass knuckles. But improvised knuckles are illegal in all fifty states. Like another example of law a section of broom handle is a dangerous object but if you wrap tape or string for grip it becomes a deadly weapon. So before following someone's advice besure to look it up butter cup. Take a self defence class cause these kind of short cuts can get you the victim time and a huge civil suit.
This could also double as a extension weapon, such as with paracord and a lug nut. With the paracord wrapped around it you could easily throw this out at somebody retrieve it put it back on hand and then go to work on them.
Just bought 4 today. With a staff discount because I work in a hardware store. It fits very well!!! I'm definitely going to add to my self protection classes!! ❤❤❤! Thank you Sir for such a un expected idea LOL 😂
i have a home-brew mini-makiwara on my heavy bag to train my hands with i think adding a carabiner to my usual routine would be an easy add on... great idea, thanks
Dear Sir, first of all you don't hold that thing right. I assume that you trying to use carabiner as knuckle duster. However, you are trying to use carabiner for purpose of knuckle duster, which btw. is not build for that purpose so you will hurt yourself more then you think. You can try to hit sandbag with that thing and you will see for yourself. Best luck
Thanks for the video. I have a few of these. I tend to end up using them to attach something to something else. I should try carrying one, but I'm pretty full of carry weapons. If I weren't full, I would carry one of these.
Hi Matt! I bought one about two years ago from Ace Hardware to hang from my garage door opener “channel iron.” Needed to enlarge the hole I was using. What for? Super band pulldowns of various types. Nice tip. Bye the way, I called it a carabiner also, but it turned out it’s called a “spring clip!” Any way you slice it , will be made in (how do you say it?) China! 😂
As a former sheriff we used the leg shackles in a similar manner when you had to deal with marshalling guys who would attack you during transport time. You are already comprised carrying the shackles because you only had one free hand. So we developed techniques to take the advantage away. You can't fail when you fight in jail! 😉
Hi! I just discovered your channel, and I really appreciate your bo staff videos. I thought about this idea years ago, and I ran into a couple of problems. These problems may have more to do with the shape of my hand. 1. The carabiner didn't fit snug around my knuckles and fingers. So when I practiced punching the bag with it on, the extra space between my hand and the carabiner was problematic on impact. 2. Where the carabiner opens and closes, opened and closed on my hand on impact. So what I decided to do instead was hold it with two fingers in the smaller loop and swing it kind of like a slap jack. Watching your video, I was thinking about what you said about the paracord and nuts. It would be nice to have a braided paracord handle with the keyring on the end and the carabiner on the other. That paracord handle, nylon strap, leather strap, or whatever could be used for the slap jack handle.
I had the same idea and tractor supply has a heavy one that has a bolt and nut on it hopefully if we have to use these things we won't get in trouble with the law the courts in California are not on our side with self defense.
Absolutely love it!!! I also teach self protection classes. My system is filo martial arts so improvised weapons is my favourite thing. Living in Australia we can't carry anything at all. All I carry a tactical pen or tactical umbrella. I love the study of the OODA LOOP!!!
Just got a few of these for free. Now I know what to do with them!💯Great video! (I keep forgetting about Tractor Supply and I have one really close to the house...)
Great idea for open hand fighting especially we don't want to bruise your knuckles, and open hand slap with one of these would definitely do some damage.
Yes, Sir! Thank you so much for such a terrific idea! Especially for me because I am a Gulf War veteran, and I am disabled. So there is the issue of disparity of strength, force, ability, and speed. You are so right about the cellphone issue. People are so stinking distracted. Thank you & God bless you.
Two points. 1. Don't be surprised when you break a bone in your hand when it rolls on impact. 2. Have a good lawyer on speed dial because it construes as a felony to use that object as a weapon.
@richiefields4799 Self-defense has to be proportional and reasonable. If someone hits you with their bare fist, hitting them with brass knuckles isn't proportional, and it may not be reasonable either. In some cases, like if you are puny or outnumbered, you may get the benefit of the doubt. The court will look at whether you had a reasonable fear of death or great bodily harm. Often, evidence is excluded, such as evidence of the assailant's prior violence, which can make it harder to prove self-defense. See Arizona vs. Fish for a very sobering example.
@richiefields4799 depending on your jurisdiction. Have a good non self defense reason for carrying any tool and as long as you didn't start or encourage the fight, you say you feared for your safety and used what happened to be available. Consult your local courts for what constitutes legal self defense where you live.
@studer6884 still horrible advice . Pathetic what some one will do for views. But don't let that stop you go head hit a heavy bag with it on and let me know how well you can defend your self after the first punch. Moron
Just came across this while viewing healthy eating videos and I am glad I saw this great tool tip for self defense. Also, it was nice to hear your taking your kids to Christian music concert and for me it’s a good news that I found another brother in Christ. God bless you and your family.
I also once had the idea but discard it because the lack of support. The opening is flexible and dont give any support or structure. There are some carabiner with nuts to fix the opening but I couldn find it in a big enough size.
Why not carrying a bottle of Coca-Cola ? or a Shoe Horn or many other things. The worst thing is to get false sense of being more secure having these items and taking more risks.
They’re some pretty decent improvised weapons hidden in plain sight indeed. That larger steel one reminds me of a tekko and the smaller locking one you could probably use as a one finger knuckle duster, but with the palm support. I’ve seen a similar thing with a padlock before many years ago. I couldn’t agree more about the phones too. I tend to just glance at mine or just look up frequently if I have it out, preferably by a wall or something. The thing about that guy falling on the tracks rings a bell, I think I remember hearing about or seeing that. I hope he’s ok, it’s ridiculous the amount of absolute psychopaths are roaming out there amongst us all
I am not sure that is a good idea. Try hitting a heavy bag to check if your hand is not damaged by the metal. It might work for hammer fist and ridge hand strikes. Maybe try hitting a tree first.
Heck yeah ! Carabiners' knucks are poor man's knuckles. Back in my bike messenger days, we use those as knuckles. I still edc carabiner to this day just in case.
as a building maintenance manager, i carry these guys around all the time, quiet a handy tool to have on ya person, been checked by police and they never give it a second thought. its not obvious unless of course you're dressed up and out and about. please explain, why you're dressed to go out and you have a work tool in your pocket? lol..... well its a funny story...........
This sounds like one of those things where everyone just goes, yeah great idea But in reality no one has ever actually tied it on a punching bag and have no clue if its just going to bust your fingers after a half dozen hits
I think, it's better to stay away from big shows.. too many people it's never 100% safe. No weapons need, just gloves, a mouth piece, a few boxing notions and awareness.
Anyone who brings a knuckle duster to a cristian youth concert, with his own kids, is setting a wrong example. in my opinion. allegedly. also thats not a real knuckle duster, so the chance you hurt yourself is pretty high.
Problem trying to get into a concert or ball park with these because where i love on the west coast you go through a metal detector ot you're won down.
What ever you carry, practice is what will make the difference.
I recommend the more premium carabiner. It has more of a “pointed” tip that can create much more force per square inch.
Link for those ?
Great info! I have a bunch of them in different sizes. I never thought you could use them for self defense. Thanks

Harbor Freight has bigger ones. They are meant to carry heavy stuff like paint cans, BUT they are so convenient when you need to carry shopping bags!
Does not fit the hand well for me at all. C clamp, and that's my final answer.
The true test is punching a sand bag, your obviously going to hurt yourself, guaranteed,
I used to carry a horse shoe in my back pocket. But the carabiner in the shape of an " 0 " that home depot has with the screw closure is real nice. Won't crush your hand.
Horseshoe would work!!
Excellent job thank you
@pasquinilli I ordered my canemasters cane from your link Monday. Looking forward to spinning it in the near future.

Google Glen Doyle or Maxime Chouinard for good YT shillelagh instruction. Keegan is another good one (Keegan Bata).

Gosh thanks for that. Bless you.

thanks Matt
2:50 “You take someone’s teeth right out of their nose, um, their mouth..” sorry I couldn’t help chuckling at that one lol
Never thought of this use but I've been wanting a knuckle duster, will have to look into this.

Great way to break your hand!!!!!!!!!
Hammer fist you won't break your hand as easy! It only takes bout 8 lbs of pressure to break the collar bone!
I also work at Bunnings. Which is a hardware store.
Great info
Come down on top of head like a hammer .
Spring for a climbing rated and have more versatility .
Nice size padlock is handy too !
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Very, very creative and resourceful!🫵
Just watched your vid, where are you located at ? Looks like Fla, but could be elsewhere. I like your take on this tho, thx for the vid

You are a good American!
You can still get steel krabs a lot heavier.
Who wants to break their fingers and also be arrested for assault with a deadly weapon? So much bad advice on the net.
You will do more damage to yourself in almost every situation with that thing.
No. I do not have a carabiner.
wouldn't it hurt your fingers too?
Not much
those small ones could easily break your fingers ,if you connect .
Lowes has new ones with a scoring edge on the corner. No authority figure whos seen it gave it any thought.
That will shread your hand.
Take care of your bones, folks. Trust me, they're important.
