That Adagio still overwhelms me. Who in the world cannot be taken by its beauty, it’s emotion, it’s absolute raw contemplation?

I'll seriously never forget first hearing the 1st movement theme. It's one of things where you just go "that makes so much sense"

A superb posting, a literally marvelous piece of music, of lilting beauty and dance, underscored by such depth of feeling, gloriously played with a union of fervent energy, nuance, richness of tone, a tender passion, inspired by reverence for and delight in this work

letter 790 to Nadezhda von Meck, 16/28 March 1878:
In his chamber music Mozart captivates one by the charm and purity of his facture, by the amazing beauty of his voice leading, but sometimes one does come across things which bring tears to your eyes. I would like to point out to you the Adagio from the G minor quintet. Nobody before or after has expressed so beautifully in music feelings of resigned, helpless grief. When Laubplayed this Adagio, I would always hide in the remotest corner of the hall so that no one could see what effect his music had on me.

Master Hayden set the bar a mile high and young Wolfgang sent it to the stratosphere. These young musicians hit this one out of the park. Bravo

ralph berney I couldn't have put it better. An exceptional video posting on YT, to the point that I one searched for , and found thefirst violin's home phone number , called her just to say that this tape is the best of everything available on YT. She was flattered and she'll remember the phone call. I still believe that ...well see Ralph Berney's commentary pls........such an inspired and convincing interpretation of any composition is hard to find. I listen to it perhaps a few times per year and it never ceases to impress me.

That is Nathan Schram playing second viola; he is now a member of the Attacca String Quartet. Do check out their web page and schedule; come to their concerts at the church in NYC at 65th and Central Park West. They are cycling through Beethoven Quartets. A couple of years ago, they were in residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and completed a complete Haydn cycle of 68 quartets.

It moves me... and shows how much Schubert has inherited from Mozart. And the adagio even preludes to Beethovens Razumovsky's quartetts - it is really the First Vienna School...

Dark and sombre, for Mozart. Even the rondo at the end seems bravura. First time I've heard this, as far as I can remember.

Bravo, beautiful. This is one of the greatest K516 I had ever listen. The quintet consists of three ladies and two gentlemen. The leftmost lady seems leading and her performance is great. This master piece is always said to ends unsuccessfully; it imply the forth mov. The incredibly magnificent dark piece abruptly changes into relatively but very good bulliriant music. Foe me, it seem that if the composer continue the magnificent dark music throughtout the 4th mov, it had became further masterpiece. The 1st is very impressive and regarded as "Tristes Allante".

If Mozart lightened up in the fourth mvt. maybe was sending a message. Like S in Schwanengesang.

The titling of this is incorrect - it is actually:
    Mozart's String Quintet in g-minor K516
I is more appropriate to call his final String Quintet (K614) the "Viola Quintet" as that one features the 2 violas very strongly especially in the 1st movement

I wonder if that viola is an Amati or Guaneri replica. I use a 1690 Amati repilica and it has a deep tone like her viola (when played correctly, which is actually difficult).

How the little genius utilized a minor key and the second viola. I wonder if they had viola player jokes in the 18th Century? Perhaps Mozart was saying: stop joking.

    • @MrFpam
      @MrFpam 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Viola was Mozart's favourite instrument and he often played it in chamber music, e.g.when he played quartets with Haydn, Dittersdorf and Vanhal.

A notre avis, il faut se contenter de prendre le Quintette
en sol mineur pour ce qu'il est, tout simplement : le chant
pur de la pure douleur. ~Jean-Victor Hocquard, *La Pensée
    de Mozart*, 1958, p. 148.
