I been doing this for awhile it work great but I have a wood stove in my green house and I keep the temperature 80 to 100 degrees, I am putting barrel out side once it warm up that way no grass pulling and cucumbers grow better in barrel then in ground, I will half to stop rain from getting into barrel , you can grow anything in these barrel, Great video Thanks for sharing.

Great video Daniel. I did some Kratky experiments a few years ago in my basement. I could not believe the results. I did a few different types of peppers, cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes, kale, and a few other types of greens. I've never produced more food in any type of garden. It was fantastic. Your video has given me the inspiration to do it again. Thanks

I use 2 grams Master Blend/ 2 grams Calcium Nitrate / 1 gram of Epson Salt. Remember Like Leon said only feed you plants on the days you eat. - Jeff

I'm growing cucumbers in plastic full size trash cans, same as the barrels, maybe shipped as barrels around here are like $25 each. It's first of July, grew initially in little dirt balls then under lights in cups with foam, grew like crazy, then in the trash can the leaves are giant and they love the water. I'm hustling to make trellises to hang them from. Really works.

tried it - it works!! When the cukes get to be about 6 inches we harvest them. Two problems. 1) we put the barrel where it got maximum sun, this resulted in wilted leaves and slowed down production. 2) what do we do with all these cukes? They keep on coming. We give some away, eat lots of salads. Next year we'll put the barrel where it won't get full sun and thinking about converting a rain barrel to use for tomatoes. THANKS ARMS FAMILY!!

With me getting older (66) I can't do a garden like I used to. I am extremely interested in this type of gardening. You mentioned some kind of trellis, how about using concrete reinforcing mesh. It's cost-effective comes in big sheets and you can cut it to go half way around the barrel, therefore you can get to both sides of it for harvesting..just a thought. Lol

  • @NorKavon
    @NorKavon 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I did a Kratky lettuce system a few years ago based on MPH Gardner info. It was great. One thing I learned:
Your container must be large enough to last the growing life of the plant. If the water and nutrient solition run low and you refill it the plants will drown. This is because as the water level drops, the roots in the water get exposed to air and change so that they can take in air. This is the essence of a Kratky system. If you suddenly put them underwater and keep them there the plant dies like it would in a flood. For this reason I love the use of the 50 gallon barrel. One other point is water temperature plays a role. If it gets too hot some plants wont do well. On the other hand the plant may live longer in the fall because the water will warm in the sun faster than soil would.

The Masterblend calculator (per link) lets you calculate for lettuce or tomatoes. I'm going to guess that tomatoes is the choice to pick for cucumbers because you need more for fruiting? For a 50 gallon drum, the ratio is 120 grams x 120 grams x 60 grams (epsom).

Daniel, I have grown a few different things in hydro and aerogarden.
    They grow great.
My problem is even herbs take on a taste of the fertilizer that is bitter and yucky.
Not sure how to explain the taste lol.
Nice nice looking veggie and herbs but taste like disappointment lol.
I'm excited to see if this blend of fertilizer does this.
Can't wait for an update when you have cucumbers.
I think if any thing is going to take on that taste it will be cucumbers since they are what 90% water.
Hope that doesn't discourage you or anyone else it just the experience I had.

Donna, & Becca, Hi --- I've been watching the videos of
Hollis, & Nancy for doing potatoes in 5 gallon buckets.
Hollis said to make sure your buckets are food related like
frosting from a bakery(or a bakery inside a store like Food Lion, or Kroger),or a restaurant
that would have pickles that came in them --- not some-thing like wood glue that one person told about his buckets,
that would seep in your plants like maybe your fertilizer came in your bucket to the store. To clarify, I ad-libbed the stores --- Hollis didn't
specify any stores. I hope my
      in-put helped. Lynda

As someone who tried the kratky method for years I can tell you one of your biggest problems will be dealing with bacteria and or/fungus in the water. Just a little bit will become a HUGE problem later on and I've lost entire pepper plants once they take over the root system. Aeration of the water is a great way to keep bacteria and fungus down while also giving your plants more air to breathe. Yeah it's a pain and costs power but you'll end up with plants 2-4 times the size of just a normal Kratky method.

When you mixed your fertilizers how did you do after measuring... just poured them in the 55 gallon drum or did you pre-mix them in water and then pour the mix in? And how much did you use the video is kinda confusing to me

Great vid! I copied your exact setup but I don't have a greenhouse so I'm wondering what you used to trellis the vines upward from the barrel? Thanks!

Daniel, I have always wanted to do this where did you get the barrels and the netting pots? Can you grow any vegetables this way. I’d love to come one day to see Leon’s place.

I haven’t tried any other crops. Net lots came from amazon and the barrels came from Leon. Just look on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace for barrels

Always been fascinated by aquaponics. Like tilapia, and the flats filter the water with gravity. Have to pump the water from the stock tanks or kiddie pools to the flats. The pump would be solar powered. Need some land first. Thanks for the information. They make smaller drums. Twenty two gallons I think.

First thanks to keachybean for getting me on track. Now to Arms Family.....
I like and appreciate how you try new things which permit us viewers to do things which might best fit where we are located and what we have to work with.
I am trying a combo of concepts, a wicking tub which also will air prune. Yet to know if extra prep work is worth it.
Made a wicking tub per your instructions, then about the level of top air holes in bottom reservoir I drilled large holes staggered to top of tub with the bottom of holes being in line with air holes in reservoir. Then lined inside of tub with fabric before adding potting mix. We’ll see.

Daniel your 100k subs plaque is almost in the mail. You just need a few more than 1,400 more subs. Congrats!!!

I like that Idea of the barrels, can a person use a 5 gallon bucket with a lid using the same method.

This is so cool, I subbed and liked . I would think adding a few shovels of real dirt in there as well might give you more nutrients when you harvest your cukes ! Could you use a five gallon bucket? Also right away I thought of putting a big funnel on top to introduce fresh rain water and drilling a little hole at the desired water hight so it would be self regulating the hight of your root water . I've got my garden all in but I might just have to give this a go at least with one little bucket for this year, so cool ! Thanks for sharing!

My set up is aquaponics with koi and goldfish in a IBC tank , I use the same blue barrels you have for my plants but cut them in the middle and put coco balls in it with my plants 🌱🙂

Where to you purchase your 55 gallon blue barrels? Are they reused or new?

@@edinnnva I'm in Australia and there is a few companies that sell them ,you can get used food grade ones which is the better option .. means they are a lot cleaner.. and all you gotta do is just wash them out a little bit

Daniel get that calcium nitrate into an air tight container. If it picks up moisture like high humidity it will set up like a brick. I'm in Kentucky with high humidity and learned that the hard way.

A tip on cutting holes bigger with a hole saw, when the center guide bit won't help. First cut a hole in a board or plywood. Use that over the area you need to cut the bigger hole, as a template and guide to steady the hole saw. 👍
