How was your Christmas? I hope you spent some time relaxing and enjoying the holiday! 🎄
The traditional Catholic custom (which many nowadays have forgotten) is to celebrate Jesus' birth for 40 days after December 25th, ending on February 2nd with the feast of Candlemas! So while a lot of people have already put their festive decorations away, others are still commemorating this pivotal moment in history! 🥳 In that spirit, I present to you a traditional Christmas hymn that probably originated in the 14th century, and Gustav Holst arranged the organ accompaniment. I love the bright and happy feel of it! 😄
Because it is comprised of 4 verses with the same melody, I invite you to focus on and contemplate the words. 🙏 I have included in the video the original Latin words, plus a literal translation into English.

Beautifully played. Such a calming hymn. Personent hodie is a Christmas carol originally published in the 1582 Finnish song book Piae Cantiones, a volume of 74 Medieval songs with Latin texts but still today beautiful music. We had a blessed Christmas

@@SweetSarahnadeMusic As well as the hymn 'God is love, his the care' by Percy Dearmer, there is an Advent carol by Fred Pratt Green, 'Long ago, prophets knew' which was probably written with the Holst arrangement in mind. The refrain, 'Ring, bells, ring, ring, ring!' goes with the peal of bells in the accompaniment, and the final question 'Who will make him welcome?' is replaced in the last verse by the answer 'We will make him welcome!' with the affirmation of the Picardy third.
