Really great guide. I love how well you addressed the safety concerns, and even tested the fire/explosion danger. Seems much safer than using a hot plate.
Love this, it looks great! Now I need to get myself a 3D printer. Do you know how one can see what type of plastic something is made out of? Would be interesting to try on Game Boy shells for a smooth finish, as they are a little rough.
It may have some printing on the inside describing the type of material. I wouldn't try that though, as it will likely screw up the finish. Also, some parts don't, so no guarantees.
dont ruin a gameboy by doing that crap to it!
Gameboy shells are actually made from ABS, but they're also thin-wall parts so bad things will likely happen.

@@DIYPerks ABS prints well on paper. the paper is glued onto a pencil glue.

Chemist here: Those gloves were pretty useless ;) acetone - and other organic solvents - are quite tricky to handle with gloves - including laboratory grade gloves. Just be careful and you should be alright. It's 'just' acetone after all ;)

@@reasonsvoice8554 it destroys nerves, the kidneys, the liver, the brain... pretty much everything. But it takes lots of Acetone over several months and you have to have skin contact or inhale the vapours, so it is no big deal to pour some drops into a glass.

captain here: never! use water on inflamable burning liquids, no matter the quantity, it can go wild in a second.

Fantastic video Matt! I need to try this when I put together my 3D printer which arrived 1 week ago. Did you try a mini heat gun on the surface? It may work well without ruining all the detail. I use a heat gun on my kayak to smooth out scratches and bring back the original color.

Wow. That audio transition from room audio to close-up audio quality, at 59 seconds in, is amazing. How did you do it? Did you make a close-up audio recording with the same script as in the room recording, from 58 seconds in, overlaped the audio and made the transition? I am puzzled by how you made that work.

Haha, yesh, I don't like hard transitions. All I did was lean towards the microphone at the end (and beginning) of the shot, talking as I did so. I then cut in to the close up narration.

If it catches fire do NOT pour on water if you don't need to (glass may shatter due to thermal shock), covering with a dish is a better option if the opening faces upwards.

Him: you should wear gloves when working with acetone
Anyone who paints their nails: yea so you're gonna dip your fingertips into this bowl of acetone for five minutes or fifteen minutes if you used gel polish
Well, Nail Polish often only contains diluted Acetone and some additives against the dry skin you get from acetone. The smell of pure Acetone is also way stronger and gives you a headache (well for me at least). Plus theres acetone free nail polish consisting of more skin friendly organic solvents, but yeah, better get as little on your skin as possible.

Love you man but you're a little late to the game on this one! Most people no longer print in ABS due to its difficulty to print without warping or delamination (a heated bed only assists the first few layers). No one has found a suitable solution however for plastics other than ABS, so I do use the hot vapour method (faster, more control but admittedly puts a non-flame heat source into the mix) when I want to get those glossy prints. Interesting you found the fan to help - in my testing the fan made the effect less consistant and it quickly began to crack and craze due to the Acetone.

kurt lindner I saw the last prusa in MAKE yourube channel, and for the price, the print quality was amazing. Sure, the machine is ugly as sin, but the prints are more than good for that price range.

You can attempt some using a heat gun. But that can be tricky and more often then not ruin things. The preferred method for PLA that the Cosplayers use extensively for their stuff is a product called XTC3D. It's a 2 part epoxy resin that you paint on. It's thin, self levels, and fills in the lines leaving a smooth surface. It's best for things you plan on painting as you can see a sort of clear shell around the object. Once cured the resin surface can also be sanded and finished.
Sand paper, primer and if you want to you can use some spray paint to finish it off

Someone needs to come up with a chemical for PLA that works as well as this for ABS.

Chloroform. Its harder to get and make sure to use it on a well ventilated area due to its toxcicity.
ABS is not the more commonly used material for printing, most people use PLA and this doesnt work on it
ABS is more commonly used in professional 3D printing cause its durability compared to PLA and easier smoothing with vapor bath. PLA other hand is more used by amateurs cause its easiest material to print.
For the smoothing, you can smooth some PLA materials with acetone, but it may need some mechanical assistance. You can also acetone glue two PLA parts together depending again maker of the material.. my guess is that some of the PLA's contain some ABS what reacts to acetone, so go figure.

and a negative pressure chamber isn't an option. since I have a 3d pen. not printer.

Justo Talkalottashit huh? A chemist is a pharmacy is all i was saying. You can get a little bottle of acetone that says ingredients:acetone for a couple of bucks at the drug store, at least in florida. Its much cheaper at home depot though.

Some delivery companies are like that. DHL is one of them. Also, the government is greedy and they want you to pay taxes hence the customs.
You do risk paying high duty for large sized items. The amount paid is approx 20% of the perceived value, not what you paid for it. So here your customs conned you by valuing your printer at 500 EUR
