    The story behind Madonna playing A New Level's main riff is because the guitarist sharing the stage with her is Monte Pittman, who was a member of Prong and her and Guy Ritchie's guitar teacher. Prong opened for Pantera on their tour for Vulgar and so he of course new Dime and she learned how to play some Pantera riffs. It was done out of tribute initially, and obviously became a fixture of this version of her song done live.

    It is so sad that metalheads can't just simply accept she rocks just because she's a pop musician. Do you really think that she couldn't have decided on her own to perform her own song doing this mix? A musician who's constantly doing totally unexpected new versions of her own songs live? Uhm, guys, when we are talking about Madonna, we are talking about a legend, an artist so huge as The Beatles. An integral and multifacetical artist. I'm pretty sure Madonna knows more metal than you think because hell yeah, she is a fucking queen. I'm so sorry that you cannot see this fact just because she is a woman and a pop musician. Metal is not only for metalheads. But is pretty clear most of metalheads just listen to metal.

      I get a Europe Vibe too,I assume it's trying to be retro. It's not an exact cover by any means,the presnetation is far different,but like,it definetely sounds like a variation on the main riff from "A New Level" by Pantera. As a Female Oriented Pop Star too it makes the song a very obvious throwback track since it stands out from the rest of her work directly,so I assume it's very intentional.

    OK I am not sure this has been said, but Madonna started in Punk Rock, in the late 70's. She played drums in Breakfast Club, and Guitar in Emmy, yes, that is definitely her playing the guitar, and check out her performance on Letterman, she can certainly play, might not be Oranthi, but she's doing it. She plays drums, perhaps, at only slightly above Novice level, but enough to make them work and play as the drummer in a band, a guitarist too. I didnt know she revisted it live. I love her now.

    • @melodyvalentine8779
      @melodyvalentine8779 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's been highly debunked that she's played guitar since the 70s. There's a video of her playing Don't Tell Me on TV in 2000 and she says she's just started learning two months ago. She's playing Am, C and G and is looking at the frets the whole time and is late on the G nearly all the way through. However, she CAN play because three years later she performed an acoustic version of an album track called Mother and Father off her American Life album. In that performance she's playing the same chords but this time she's playing (I think, if I remember correctly) an F major full barre chord. She definitely plays a barre chord and she plays it in time and sings beautifully. It's probably my favourite Madonna performance of all time. If she was playing like that in 2003, I can only imagine that almost 20 years later (how did THAT happen?! 20 years?!) that she's a very, very, good player. Plus she'll have the best guitars and best people to teach her. She had a second guitarist playing with her on the Mother and Father performance and people in the comments knew who he was and said she was taught by the best. It's definitely worth a watch if you like her and like to see her playing guitar.

      @@Apis4 where? I'd love to see them. I'll happily admit I'm wrong if I am but she literally says in 2000 "I've just started learning to play so I might mess up, don't nobody laugh at me, promise not to laugh at me?" There's a video on here of a professional guitar player called Wings of Pegasus who analyses that video and he mentions what you said about her playing for what would have been at least 21 years and said there's just no way. Even I can tell that's not someone who's played since the 70s. I wonder why she lied and said she had just started learning then? That's odd. Anyway, link me the videos you're on about x

      @nikolaybelyaev9311 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Let me explain, why it completely sucks.
      First of all, almost every Dime's riff is a piece of art, that sounds like a mastership only when played by its creator (like bohemian rapsody). She will never perform this riff with the attitude and passion, comarable to Dime's.
      Second, she played it without announcing the real creator. So just imagine: literally 95% of the audience have no clue who Dimebag is, and after she started playing the riff they would think: ""Wooow, ShE iS sO hArDcOre", when basically she had just borrowed the riff without letting people know it's not hers. She, or anybody whose idea it was, simply privatised the riff, which i consider a complete disrespect for Dimebag.
      And yeah, screw sellout artists which she definitely is.

    It is very common for the more closed-minded rock / metal community not to enjoy anything that is not of their genre, especially when it involves someone from pop trying to cover a striking rock/metal song.
    But when you have an open mind and know how to value each genre that exists in this world, you start to understand and love these covers, the artists and their songs, and of course this version of Madonna's "Hung Up" with the striking riffs of "A New Level" by Pantera, made this song even more awesome and incredible, and this demonstrates once again, you don't have to be someone from rock / metal to be good at guitar or any other instrument related to this genre.

    Wow, even Madonna loves Pantera. It seems like you can't go anywhere without hearing about them or something from them. And Dimebag was one hell of a lead guitarist. Granted, his rhythm segments are pretty damn easy to do, but his solos are where he mastered in. And I give her props to nailing the rhythm of this one itself alone. Because, that is a pretty rough rhythm mostly because of the timing.

    I have respect for Madonna and I saw her learning guitar on Letterman so ... yeah... it's her...BUT, it has to be mentioned... her left hand is not so impressive ,because the guitar has been tuned to an open chord so all she has to do is bar straight across the fret and she has the chord she needs (look closely). Having said that... her RIGHT hand has improved immensley... which in effect is the more improtant hand to work on. So.. all said and done... you can see the improvement as a guitarist. As a Jimi Hendrix/ Ritchie Blackmore /Stevie Ray Vaughn guitar show-off ... looks like she's a born natural... however... too bad she didn't SMASH the 3.679.00 dollar Les Paul at the end... then I could add Pete Townshend to te show-off list.

    Madonna is a real one, started in punk, did almost every genre out there and is still a beast when it comes to performance.
    also, hate seeing the metalheads patronising in the comments. It’s possible to like more than one genre of music and show respect. Madonna transcends those, a real icon, deserves better than those “that’s real music!!! that one pantera fan in the crowd who came with his gf must have loved this!!!!” when in reality most music lovers are able to love and enjoy both, women included.

    Besides singing, Madonna has the ability to play several musical instruments. She learned to play drum and guitar from her then-boyfriend Dan Gilroy in the late 1970s, before joining the Breakfast Club line-up as the drummer.[274] This helped her to form the band Emmy, where she performed as the guitarist and lead vocalist.[274] Madonna later played guitar on her demo recordings. On the liner notes of Pre-Madonna, Stephen Bray wrote: "I've always thought she passed up a brilliant career as a rhythm guitarist."[301] After her career breakthrough, Madonna focused mainly in singing but was also credited for playing cowbell on Madonna (1983) and synthesizer on Like a Prayer (1989).[272] In 1999, Madonna had studied for three months to play the violin for the role as a violin teacher in the film Music of the Heart, before eventually leaving the project.[302] After two decades, Madonna decided to perform with guitar again during the promotion of Music (2000). She took further lessons from guitarist Monte Pittman to improve her guitar skill.[303] Since then, Madonna has played guitar on every tour, as well as her studio albums.[272] At the 2002 Orville H. Gibson Guitar Awards, she received nomination for Les Paul Horizon Award, which honors the most promising up-and-coming guitarist.[304]
