Thanks for the tutorial. If I'd known Shopify didn't have parent and child collections built in I'd never have signed up for it. Your tutorial is great but it's a sticking plaster solution for a feature that should be in the app from the start (not your fault, clearly something Shopify should have sorted out ages ago!)
I'm a novice Shopify user, and this channel is proving to be the most comprehensive and intelligible resource for me. To wit, this tutorial just saved me from another slog through the Shopify message boards. Great stuff!
Very helpful video. I was feeling very lost and not making progress searching the Shopify support articles. They were not helpful. I watched your video and made massive progress setting up pages that work like parent collections. I'm switching from WooCommerce and the way Shopify handles this is just a different way to do it. Not necessarily bad, just different and a learning curve. But I'm already liking Shopify 100x more than WooCommerce & WordPress. Thanks for your easy to follow video - I appreciate it!
This is perfection! You are so good at explaining the topic at hand while also giving some additional related info-simple and to the point. Thank you!!
you my friend are awesome. i was struggling to see how to create sub categories and your video provided the information in the most simpliest way. Welldone and thank you
Hi @EdCodes I find your tutorials so helpful thank you. I have a question for you, would you recommend creating one collection template that uses dynamic sources for the sub collections or single collection templates ?
Hi, very useful thanks! Is there a speed or SEO advantage to doing it this way instead of using a metaobject. I think there may be an SEO advantage as the pages are there and not created dynamically, but I’m very unclear on how the google robot trawls the site. I’d really appreciate your opinion. BTW - I’m finding your videos very helpful. 👍
Thanks for an awesome tutorial, very helpful! Can you help me with one thing that is related to this? How do I make sub-collections show in url and breadcrumbs? Let's say now it's collections/boys and when I go to boys shorts it shows collections/boys-shorts, how do I make it show full url like this - "collections/boys/boys-shorts"? Thank you in advance.
Thanks for the video! I managed to create template and sub-collection but if I go to my main collections there are all collections visible, even the ones I put as sub-collections to my template. Is there any way how to hide these from main collection menu?
can we have for example boys+girls+women... on one template? i mean when our customer visit our website be able to scroll down and see all collections with sub collections? or just one template is visible one time for one collection?
no sure if this is just as good, put I hid the product grid and added a feature collection (with no heading) to be the overall parent collection of products (if that makes sense)
Hi Ed, Thank you so much for sharing some many great tutorials, it's really helpful for me, and I guess for a lot of small shopify business owner as well. A question here for you, I am using the " Impulse" theme, and after I create the collection list on the front page, it also shows on every single page (pagination pages). is there a way for me to just let the sub-collection list on the first page only? Thank You!
Thanks for this tutorial, man. You're the best. When you mentioned creating subcollection pages I was expecting to have have a subdirectory for every subcollection. Like the following: /collections/computers /collections/computers/complete-systems/
Thank you so much for your channel, absolutely love the way you teach. On the Dawn theme, on collections, is it possible to get rid of the text name of the collection? So only the image is there, and it is the link?
Hey Ed, thanks for this! Is creating a separate template for each unique parent collection the only way to handle this, or could we do a single parent collection template and then select subcollections for each instance via metafields, or something along those lines?
At 0.57 & 3.23 I could see the "Unavailable on buy button" under the Boys collection... was curious what that was, how you did it, and what is the purpose of it??
H!, If i want that collection list to load automatically using the value contained collection level meta field to load for example all the collections named after the value stored in their country metafield is that possible?
I'm using superstore theme by out of the sandbox and there is nothing on section while going through default collection. and i was wondering to know about how to make separate theme layout for women and men. for instance kylie cosmetic (they made kylie, kylie cosmetic, kylie baby within one website but in different layout), another example is fashion nova they made women and men category in different layout but within one website. How is it possible? please let me know
I have a question that I'm not sure there is an answer to. I have made quite a bit of sub-collections and therefore collection templates. When I go to make a new collection template now, the "create template" button is all the way at the bottom and I have to scroll, scroll, scroll every template I make. I know it isn't the worst problem but added up through the day it is becoming very time consuming. Does anyone have a workaround that by chance?
Thank you so much man, I was getting desperate for days because of that. Besides working on my main page theme I’m also trying out another theme trial , but I can’t transfer those changes you just showed to the Test theme? Is that because it’s just a trial where I can’t manually work on the codes and templates? Would appreciate a quick response
Thank you for your tutorials! They are amazing! :) I have a question regarding the dawn theme navigation. Is it possible to have a clickable main menu item e.g. "Equipment" with nested drop-down sub-menu items which can be clicked as well? I think it's not possible but I thought I'd ask. Currently I have let's say "Equipment" and the drop-down items are collections. The other thing I did is that I made a sub-menu item under "Equipment" and named it "View All Equipment" and assigned a collection to it which contains all the products of the "Equipment Collection". If I want to assign a page "Equipment" to the "View All Equipment" I must make a template for that page and assign the template to the relevant page? (I saw this in one of your other tutorials) like the contact page has a template. I can make a template for the "Equipment" page to be able to design and add elements to it. So I go back to my first question, is it possible to have clickable top-menu item along with nested sub-menus underneath it? Thank you for reading and thank you for your tutorials! :)
The reason I am asking this is because when someone finds my page on Google and the "Equipment" page appears under my page title and when clicked on, it will take them to the "Equipment" page but it will be empty, I just added a description for SEO purposes. When you navigate through my page in the top main menu items the "Equipment" menu will just have the clickable sub-menus but you will not be able to find the "Equipment" as a page anywhere (except if you make a clickable link). That's why I am asking if it's possible. It's a shame to just make a page for the "Equipment" page and not be able to click on it as you are browsing in my website. You will be able to click on it before you enter because google will see it as my page/top menu item that it exists. I don't know if I am correct on this because I don't know too much stuff about it. Do you know of a solution if there is any? Sorry for the big message! Thank you in advance.
I just realized that it's a link... I won't have to make it clickable in the main menu am I? :D On google they will just read the page title and description and just click on it and it will take them to the relevant page/main menu item of my main page. They just won't see the initial text they saw before clicking as I will have the drop down menus and they won't be able to see the content of the actual page the clicked on. They will be able to see the page only if I don't have sub-menu items and it's just a page like the contact page. Is that correct?
Thankyou for this! However how do u make the only collections to show as “girls” and “boys” on the main product list… then have the other collections appear inside of them… i am not knowing how to have the first collections “boy and girl” to appear alone without the other collections showing at once
Can this be done on a normal page ? I want to have a page ALL COLLECTIONS and on that page i want to have many different COLLECTIONS with their SUBCOLLECTIONS?
Hey ED is it possible easily to have a main collection like t-shirt and some filters : color, matter… and the possibility to custom the différents titles, content (description) of the filtered page ?
Not really because the filtered page is just the same collection page. If you want to do this it might be better to just have a side navigation instead of filters, and going directly to other collection pages when they are clicked.
Is there any way to have all products on one page in Shopify on the Dawn theme? If not - do you if there's a Shopify theme that does have this? Thanks!~
I'd like to preface this question and mention the fact that I am clueless when it comes to shopify. I've managed to get all my sub-collections created but now I can't click on those sub-collections and see any products. How do I add my products to each sub-collection? For some reason one sub-collection has the completely wrong page linked to it and I have no clue how I've done that to even go back and fix it. Please help!
How to apply this sub collections template to all collections by default? Without create one template for each collection and add sub collections manually. Is it possible to apply this layout to all collections?
This sadly doesn't work for me. It keeps changing to other pages. I figured out its bcs I am not 'live' (the theme is not published like yours) but on 'draw' and then it does not work, which is very annoying bcs you don't want to publish a website for a company that's unfinished. Do you have an other option than templates? Maybe pages?
Can this been done if a legacy theme (not 2.0) is active. I'm trying to design new (2.0) theme while leaving the legacy theme active...don't think I'm able to assign templates. Thank you!
Ed this is crazy , since i created the collections lists, customers cannot see products its keep coming back to the collection list pages , this is horrible can you please HELP !!!!!
Does your store need to be live to add the collection template? I am editting a draft copy and when I make a template for a sub-category it doesn’t show up when I try to assign it to a collection.
Your store doesn't need to be live, but the theme needs to be your main published theme. You will not see templates from unpublished themes in the dropdown on collections/products admin.
In the sidebar you should see which collection you are currently previewing. Maybe it's an empty collection, or all the products are out of stock or drafts?
Thanks for the tutorial. If I'd known Shopify didn't have parent and child collections built in I'd never have signed up for it. I just have to say WOW!!! I spent 2 days searching for this and found your video. It is so perfectly what I have been looking for. Thank u!!
This is perfection! You are so good at explaining the topic at hand while also giving some additional related info-simple and to the point. Thank you!!
Omg that delete collections tip at the end is wonderful ❤️ x
Would love to see even more shopify tutorials, not many people explain Shopify and keep up to date
Thank you Ed for the these wonderful instruction videos. I occasionally go back and rewatch them to refresh my memory.
I like your videos, they are helpful, not bloated with unnessesary talking. For me, until now number 1 shopify coach on YT.
Wow. Thanks a lot for 2 weeks now I have been going back and forth with Shopify support on how to create sub collections
Thanks a lot for this
Absolutely amazing. I have been trying to figure this out for 2 hours.
you my friend are awesome. i was struggling to see how to create sub categories and your video provided the information in the most simpliest way. Welldone and thank you
BRO, you are an absolute legend. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I GENUINELY APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT.
I did this without knowing it was a new thing as I am building my store. glad to know it’s also good for SEO
Very comprehensive and easy to follows. Thanks.
Crazy! That's exactly what I was searching for. Very good video and understandable explanation. Thank you very much.
Thank you so much!!! I've been wanting to do this for a long time with my site. 2.0 just got even better!
thank you so much brother , i was looking for this since last two days
This had me stumped for a while and you made it easy. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this. So clearly explained!
were you able to change the theme template? If yes then how?
@@Dalbirsingh12667 I followed the tutorial step by step. The only trouble I am having is adding any products tot he 'product grid'.
Very helpful video.I was feeling very lost and not making progress searching the Shopify support articles.
Thank you sir.. This was giving me a headache trying to figure out forever. You rock
Thanks Ed, as always very informative video. Thanks for all your time and hardwork putting them together
nice one, we use a breadcrumb navigation which doesn't seem to show structure I am assuming this is still not possible?
This is amazing! I have been searching on how to to do sub categories! Just subbed! 😁 You made my day and made my website look just the way I wanted.
This is very helpful 🌿 thanks for the effort and the tricky tips 👌
This content was exceedingly helpful. Thank you ever so much for sharing.
Please make the part 2 for creating custom forms with checkbox, phone number validation, email validation
Thanks for giving so much value 🥰
That will be the next video! Thanks for watching :)
This is exactly what I was troubling with right now. Thank you Ed👍
Glad you found it useful!
Thanks , did it on my clients website in 10 mins.
Best video i have seen. Thank you!
Hi @EdCodes I find your tutorials so helpful thank you. I have a question for you, would you recommend creating one collection template that uses dynamic sources for the sub collections or single collection templates ?
Thanks for the video. Your video helped me alot👍
Hello Ed,> Is there a simpler way to do subcollections now?
Wow, this is super helpful. Thank you.
I'm using an old Ventura theme. It doesn't have a create a template option. Is there a workaround to achieve a subcollection effect?
excellect video and tuition thankyou so much !
Excellent info, thank you.
Thank you for solving this it was annoying the heck out of me haha.
As always - 🔥🔥🔥!
Hey, this is cool, what about more than three sub-navigation menu items. DO you have a work around?
Damn! Just what i needed! Thaaaaaaaank youuuuuuu!
First, thank you so much for your amazing video. I did everything, but I can’t show the new template on the homepage. Do you know what went wrong?
Hi, very useful thanks! Is there a speed or SEO advantage to doing it this way instead of using a metaobject. Thanks, Ed! Exactly what I needed to know.
Mate great video. Thanks so much
Thnnksss a lot broo you a lifeee saver🔥🔥
Hi Ed.
Thanks a lot. Any ideas how to add subcollections to the breadcrumbs?
What am I missing if the Theme Template that I created is not showing up. The only one showing is Default Collection. Great video as well!
Hi bro, the theme your editing must be public, otherwise it wont show up.
Now, in your example at 7:42 when i click on boys pants i don't see the actual product but girls cloth instead! any advise with thanks :)
How did you get the code editor color to grey? Mine is black and I want to change it to white. Is it based on the theme colors?🤷♀️🤷♀️
Perfect 👍👍

Hey! I wrote up a quick solution here - ed.codes/blog/display-a-section-only-on-page-1-of-a-collection - hope it helps.
Thanks for this tutorial, man. You're the best. When you mentioned creating subcollection pages I was expecting to have have a subdirectory for every subcollection. Like the following:

Yeah unfortunately Shopify is really strict with the URL structure. You can only have 1 level - collections/whatever.
Thank you for sharing. Do you know how to delete a template in Shopify 2.0? Thank you.

this would be much simpler and logical.
Does the theme need to be published in order to make these changes. For example assigning the collection to the page created when editing theme?
Yes, which is very annoying. You do not want to publish an unfinished website... and if its not published these theme's do not work apparently.
