  • Google I/O '08 Keynote: Imagination, Immediacy, and Innovation... and a little glimpse under the hood at Google
Marissa Mayer has been with Google for 9 years, helping to build Google into one of the world's most popular web services. As the VP of Search and User Experience, her team is behind some of Google's most popular and successful products including core web search, images, news, books, maps, iGoogle, toolbar, desktop, and health. This talk is a glimpse from inside the trenches of how Google builds products (including practical insights on how to build the best products), how to prioritize your efforts especially under resource constraints, and how to think about strategy.

A very good and impressive presentation which did not let me get bore. She was natural and had a good body language - ofcourse she has been doing it for years.

It's fascinating how this simple Google homepage created out of basic functionality has transformed into a full fledged design philosophy aka 'Google Material Theme', which itself is a 4 years evolution of 'Material Design'.
It's also funny that it took them literally 20 years to accept it as something out of incompetency and utilitarianism to an opinionated identity of the whole company that touches every Google service and hardware product.
It's a transformation from becoming a strictly 'Utilitarian' company to a company that deeply cares about 'Design'.

Marissa's keynote talk was very comprehensive and digestable for a common lay person to understand and enough for an expert to build on. She has a beautiful smile and capitivates the audience when she uses it. Very composed and professional through and through. Great Job.

It is such a shame to see that such brilliant people like her are used to make money. Isn't there any higher ideal in this life to aim?

Completely agree! Thinking on how to make people spend more and more money instead of placing higher humanity aims. It has been the same with the ML/DL sphere in recent years, they spend so much effort just to get more money out of the consumers, no more dreams of other planets colonization and going beyond our everyday primitive instincts. We are moving toward animal beginning within us having forgotten that we are also Humans.

@@vadimrudakov8907 Without money, impact, and the progress of technologies, how do we aim higher? See Elon Musk and Jeff Besos; they are making money and then aiming higher, as you said. Also, these tech leaders put a lot of effort into charity.
Do you think a single, smart person can do better in "placing higher humanity aims"?

    • @vadimrudakov8907

@@raulgool The single person is nothing, I agree with you, but when we are a legion, it makes a difference. If every person gets self-educated all the time and grows as a person, the entire society is inevitably going to change. We cannot change other people (do we have a right for that?), but everyone can and should change him/herself and thus keep hope on the entire society's change. We are the building blocks of the society, and everyone is responsible for his/her own block, i.e. for his/her own actions. Look at yourself, not others, and do what you can and must do, this way you change the society for better, this is my motto (after a Kantian philosophy).
