    Thanks for the vid. When I got my first retic the previous owner left several stuck sheds and it cut off circulation to her tail. The vet actually told me it was not going to be saveable... I'm happy to report after a lot of attention I was able to save her tail and it's Almost fully healed 7 months later! This is great information so people can avoid putting their animals through the same stress my poor girl had to endure.

      Oh my God that's terrible! Poor baby ☹ That's amazing though! You must have put so much effort into treating her. I love hearing people talk about their experiences like yours! Obviously I dont mean I love hearing that she wasn't properly cared for, I love the fact that you clearly must've had an abundance of knowledge about the animal you were getting in advance, and that you were able to give her a better life : ) I can't tell you how sick and tired I am seeing comments like, "I'm getting my first snake tomorrow! What kind of substrate should I use?" NO! Keeping snakes takes more attention, equipment, time, and especially knowledge than so many people think. Just because you only have to feed them once every week or 2 doesn't mean they don't require your attention 7 days a week! And clearly, if someone's asking very beginner questions like substrate, temperatures etc, you are absolutely not ready to own a reptile yet! Ahhh I'm sorry, I didn't mean to go on a rant...I just meant to say you did an amazing thing for your girl, and I wish more people would do their research before purchasing 😁

    Before I ask my question, I want to make it clear that I have ZERO experience keeping snakes. However, I'm about a year into research on specifically ball pythons (when I consider taking on a life, I try to take it seriously). I also understand the scale of the NERD operation and the years of experience and vast amount of knowledge Kevin has.
    I've seen racking systems before, and understand things look smaller on camera. My question has nothing to do with the bins, but rather the contents.
    Are the water dishes I saw in today's video large enough for the snakes to soak in? Also, do those particular snakes have hides? Or do they even need them? I've seen a variety of different set ups and sometimes get mixed information. I know the snakes featured today aren't balls, so I could just have requirements mixed up. I'm trying to ask as respectfully as possible, because I know I am a pure and utter n00b, so please dont attack me lol

      The large Representatives of the reptile community are actually getting together soon to discuss whether or not the 'standard' tub setup in breeding facilities is adequate. Brian Barcyzk is trying to get them all together to address growing concerns about the enclosures they all use, and is going to try to get them to agree on the price raising that would come with the more expensive/rewarding enclosures.
      They know it's a short coming amongst the hobby, and the guys at NERD actually seem to be ahead of the curve in a lot of ways.
      But rest assured, they're going to talk it over (like how they've all agreed to avoid showing live feedings, before).

    • @Anubis30224
      @Anubis30224 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The water dishes are not large enough. When the hobby started out, it was realized that tub systems can become traps for scale rot when the dishes were large enough for soaking.
      BUT when the hobby started out, they didn't think monitors were intelligent, so the science behind reptile keeping has changed greatly. They're supposedly getting together to 'unionize' and decide what's best for the reptiles nowadays vs when they all started.

    Put lukewarm water and mix it with baby oil. It has been serving me well, learned this from a reptile forum. Sometimes water is not enough the oil just makes the dry skin elastic and everything will come off in one piece. But I never leave them in there couple days, probably just 30 mins max

    So I have my first snake and he is a baby Darwin python. He is having his 2nd shed but first with me. It looks like there is a lot of shed from his bell to tail but none above, I thought it was weird so I gave him a soak, not for to long, but after the shed was really coming off, but not in one piece, I think maybe it was because I was handling him (I’m not gonna touch him till his done now) and maybe some rips happen. When he was sliding back in to his tank the shed was coming of on my hand on his tail and it came off all in one piece, I have looked at so many videos but nothing similar came up. What do you think this could be? What should I do? (Already misting his enclosure)

    So Kevin, quick question. For blood and all short tail pythons, I have read and heard from others that they do not poop for a month to two months at a time. I really want to know if you would consider doing this method for a snake that hasn’t pooped in a couple weeks and I did see the part were you touched on this but I wanted to qualify.

    I'm a new owner of a corn snake. It looks like it's had a few sheds but it has shed stuck on its lower jaw. And it looks pretty thick. He is about 5 years old I was told. Any tips I have bathed him a few times but the skin seems tough to take off. I don't want to pull it because I don't want to hurt him so I've been holding the shed and letting him pull away from me and snap whatever he can off. Any tips please would be appreciated 😊

    this is great info! but im sorry those tubs for the bolen´s are ridiculously small..... I know snakes are simple animals but comon you can do better......

    • @Littlewings1211
      @Littlewings1211 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lucia NoExiste it’s not about their simplicity it’s about mimicking their behaviour and habitat as much as possible to reduce the stress of the animal.
      If a snake escapes from its enclosure or you find a snake somewhere 95% of the time (if not more) it will be curled up in a small dark space like underneath a piece of furniture or behind a chest of drawers. This is because that is the environment they feel safe in. The larger the space the more the chance of a larger predator being able to get in there and try and eat them. Small spaces don’t have room to allow something of a size that can do them harm so they feel safe.
      The rack system is basically a load of hide boxes (when the drawers/trays are shut) where snakes can curl up and feel safe. As long as the snake has enough space to have a hot side and a cold side of its enclosure and it can move between the two in order to thermoregulate then they have all the room they need. Larger tubs would just mean that in order to not stress out the animals you’d need to give them a hide box and they would just spend all their time curled up in there.

    • @jav8094
      @jav8094 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah these racks are insanely cruel. Imagine if someone kept a hamster in a cage only big enough for it to turn around. People would be outraged.

      Scale rot is always something to look for.

    • @GrapeApe2018
      @GrapeApe2018 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wasn't just talking about me. I have been researching set ups, husbandry, breeds etc. for years so I would be ready when I bought my first snake. In doing that research, reading books, reading blogs, watching vlogs, and Q&A videos, there are always people asking about prices. Plus it's really hard to keep your animal healthy if it arrives sick because you thought you were getting a good deal and got taken for being a sucker, or blew all their money on a way overpriced animal and now can't afford to take it to a vet. And go ahead and give me an example of someone who would be ok paying $5000 for a $500 animal? There are a lot of mean nasty people in this world who will take advantage of people anytime they get a chance. And others who like to judge people based on their superiority complex. Why in the world would you think it's ok to jump down someone's throat for being responsible enough to do their due diligence? And maybe help someone else out by asking questions they may be afraid or embarrassed to ask themselves?
      Since you know nothing about me, let me give you some background information. I am 49, female, who had their first paying job at 12 caring for animals, who has taken care of every one of their own pets since age 5, who began working with the vet. at age 14, for free, just to learn everything I could about properly caring for a multitude of animals, who still helps the vet. whenever time allows just to stay up on the latest developments, who has been the person the vet brings sick or recovering farm animals to, who need constant care or close monitoring if he doesn't trust the owners ability to do so, who has been a wildlife rehabilitator for 33 years, who has been rescuing, fostering, and/or rehabilitating animals from natural and/or man made disasters for 31 years, and nursing humans for 28 years. Plus since retiring early after becoming debt free, I've been running a private "retirement" home for unadoptable and/or special needs cats, so those who can, can spend their time as they choose, outside chasing bugs, birds, or a blowing leaf in their secured 2 acre yard, or staying inside the temperature controlled building as they please.
      So... If it's ok with you, I am going to keep asking questions, both before and after I buy my snake, so that I can worry if my animal is healthy and in a proper setup.

    At my house I have well water with a slight sulfur smell but I don't drink it so I don't think my animal should but I do bathe in it is it okay to bathe my snake in it I normally just use bottled water for him for bathing soaking drinking is humidity box but would that be okay if I let him soak in well water with a sulfur smell and I do treat my water with hydrogen peroxide and it reduces the smell I'm just curious about this I've never done it but if someone could let me know about this would be awesome I don't think I would do it but unless I really had to but then I would just probably go get him some Creek Water

      If I've understood it correctly snakes often drink a little of the water they're being soaked in so if you're uncertain about the quality of the water maybe it's best not to use that. Better safe than sorry I mean 😊

      Yes that is correct snakes to drink the water that they soak in but the water is perfectly safe it drain what I was saying is I don't drink it so I shouldn't have to let my snake drink it cuz it just tastes like crap but I've also found water snakes gardner snakes rattlesnakes in my well in the water I was just trying to figure out if maybe this sulfur smell would give them digestive problems

    Maybe it's because their containers are too small and they can't move.

    Translucent, not opaque. Opaque would be the eye cap turning completely dark so the snake can't see through it at all, translucent is like frosted glass where light comes through but it's been diffused so everything is blurred.

      Opaque is a comparative term in this case; it's not all or none. The snake's eye caps become MORE opaque, i.e. LESS transparent, as it nears shed.

      fckoff 76hansolo what’s the difference between a tank and a tub ? The only big things I could really think of is that one of them you can see through and can have a more difficult time keeping it humid while the other you cannot see through and in general you’ll have an easier time keeping it humid. It doesn’t really matter what you keep your snake in as long as you provide them with the right amount of space, bedding, water, humidity, heat, and food. Like tubs and tanks aren’t all that different in my opinion- it’s the husbandry that matters

      Mia Pauley so you think snakes don’t move in the wild? And love not having any sunlight? Ignorance must be bliss. I think both are wrong but at least in a tank they can stretch out, explore and enjoy light.
