Kristi, love the show, wondering if you guys will get to review the new Integra 8.4?
We requested it upon receiving the press release and were told that review units would not be sent out because this receiver was only meant for installers. @@giovanni1269
@@KristiWright thanks for the quick response. Love the show and keep doing what you are doing, you guys provide the community with great information that allows all of us to learn and make better decisions on our audio systems. Thank you!
I believe we've requested one. @@michael-4k4000
I can't agree with you on the fact that a customer would not feel that they don't have something exclusive because at that price, you're paying for performance first. I don't think most people are the style hawk, that you are. If your complaint is that the speaker isn't "pretty" enough to feel special, I do feel like you're over thinking it. Just comparing the size of the speaker to its performance as you described, will leave buyers in a very Happy place.
The review was excellent but your final thoughts and explanation following Kristi's questioning was unparalleled. What an insight into both of you complicated job and tribulations. I really loved it.
Thanks so much!
The conversation with you and Kristi at the end is really good and brings forward great points for the audiophile community.
If you don’t normally stay till the end of their reviews, stay for this one.
Good morning everyone! Thank you for joining us today!!

Hi Kristi, Andrew. I hope you both r well .Can I ask if u guys plan on reviewing the totem line of speakers ? Thx again .
Hello Kristi, you got my sub✌️ Greetings from UK🏴
Always good to see y’all on a Sunday morning 🙌
I really appreciate the clear "struggle" you both go through to give us the insight and perspective we all need to make an educated purchase.
If I have to spend $14,000 on a pair of speakers then it has to be special and handcrafted from the brand's home country. Because you're not only buying a certain product, you're also buying the heritage, history and reputation. I don't mind paying extra for speaker's like Sonus faber or musical instruments like Martin Guitars. For as long as they are hand made with love and passion from their country of origin.
Was right now wondering if you were ever going to review these 200, and a YT notification arrived. Perfect tining
Hope you enjoy the video!
The discussion at the end of this review highlights one of the many reasons this channel is a valuable resource to all listeners from music lovers everywhere, to the beginning audiophile, to the C.E.O. of a high end audio company. Mr. Robinson’s ability to humbly step outside of himself and draw upon his years of experience not only with audio but with conversing with listeners of all types to paint a picture of the pros and cons of a loudspeaker with a wink back to each kind of listener is invaluable. Not only is he providing that short hand for the viewer, he is doing it while avoiding unseen industry mine fields and bias all while communicating with the bedside manner of a friend.
Wow!!! Forget the product review, this is the best QOTD in a long time. The gap from midfi to hifi is almost a lateral move nowadays. The mid level companies are exposing the hi end and saying we know where you get your drivers and what you pay for them. We can do it too and sound just as good. The hi end are still winning on fit and finish, but is that enough? Not for most of us.
thanks for sharing your thoughts and for answering Kristi's question of the day!
Thank you both for taking the time for this review. Well done.
You have verified what I like and enjoy with the work that the two of you do so well together. You select a wide range of products to review and ask questions to enlighten your viewers and make them think and question their perceptions and misperceptions and I love that. You are helping to remove the stigma that people who are active in this hobby with strict budget considerations have regarding individuals with deeper pockets who consider these individuals as having more money than brains. I appreciate the opportunity to have something new to think about and to discuss ideas, thank you.
Thanks so very much. I really appreciate your comment!
Great review. Not confusing at all! I especially enjoy your discussions. This really makes your channel stand out.
Very good perspective on this review throughout from the both of you! Keep up the good work!
A wonderful and thoughtful review! I always enjoy Kristi’s input at the end!🥰
I’m always amazed how some speakers with 6.5 inch woofers can dig deep / go full range while so many others can’t. Realize technology and cabinet come into play but so cool these sized woofers are bringing the bass! Thank you Andrew and Kristi for a great Sunday kick off!
Any sound under 80Hz are not from 6.5 inch woofer. Nobody can change laws of physics yet. It's from the port that are tuned very low. Port sound always carries very high percentage distortion.
These speakers look gorgeous to me.
Me too. love the looks of these, but the price is too high for them. still the finished quality is amazing.
I own the Anthem STR amplifier and am looking forward to your review.
After using the room correction software and setting the listening position parameter to within a 2" range I finally felt I had it dialed in. It made a big difference to me
Loved the final debate with Kristy, thanks for the effort and heart put in each episode!
Awesome review. I really enjoyed your dialogue about the subtle differences of different speakers and even different expectations of the customer at different price ranges. Having you and your wife discuss your individual opinions elevates the value of your reviews.
I enjoy the interaction between you and your wife. Thanks for all the great content.
Fantastic review. Great episode. Yes, a lot of different things can be true.
I love my Monitor Audio Silver 500G, I hope some day I can afford the Platinum series, also, the Monitor Audio costumer service is one of the best I ever seeing, they even sended me a replace speaker for free from the UK to Brazil, awesome!!
The Gold would probably get you most of the way. MA almost seems to double the cost as you go up a level
Exceptional review and discussion, thanks to you both. This helps in understanding myself and in choosing what will make me happy 🎉
My word they look amazing, nice review team!
My father taught me to always remember that in most cases “form follows function.” Thanks for another great review!
I have the Platinum PL500 II and find them phenomenal. I don't care if they are built in China. If they were built in North America or Europe, it would cost double or triple. Also, MA 100% develops and builds all their drivers in-house themselves, which not many companies do. I like the fact that made in China saved me money 😂 The technology and R&D behind their drivers are easily available online to read, especially on how much engineering has gone into them!
The Platinum G2 serie was built in UK, and not abroad.
@kuntja Well if they were made in the UK, they would have proudly stated that. I just double-checked the plinth of my PL 500 and the boxes, no where does it say UK nor China, so go figure. But as far as search online and forums they started moving production to China starting year 2004.
Amazing review, nothing to say, you and Kristyi have already said everything, and I agree with every single syllable: they sound very (very!) great (with the right amp) but for that amount you would expect something more "special".
Those speakers are admittedly absolutely gorgeous. Awesome discussion. Agree there is lots of competition around that price point. Would probably get La Scalas near that price. Despite some of these higher end speakers being beautiful, I would ultimately be most moved by just the sound quality.
Amazing review and interview.
Love the end discussion, thanks for clearing things up.
I love my silver 300s, your review is what pushed me towards them
The Silver Series is GREAT!
Another fun part of your reviews is to put the music you mention on my own system and listen for the characteristics you both describe Your reviews are a great resource to experience fun music I did not know existed
I know right? I find myself jotting down these tracks/artists so I can play 'em on my setup.
So glad to hear the two of you do this!
Big chat in this review, love the spicy points ❤
Very nice to see you review top of the line Monitor Audio speakers.
2nd from the top now 😉 Thanks for watching!
OUTSTANDING review. This is the hi-fi real talk that makes this channel elite.
To return to the car analogy, perhaps this speaker has a similar problem to Aston Martin: it obviously exudes luxury and excellence, but at that price point, looking "normal" defeats the purpose (which is to represent a pinnacle and a pinnacle by definition isn't ordinary).
A platinum 200 customer is probably closer to a Kef Blade 2 Meta buyer than a R11 Meta buyer, so this point you've raised IS necessary to address, even if awkward or unfair.
Thanks as always.
Great review and Andrew always makes his comments in context
Thanks for the wonderful review as always. Reviews need to include subjective assessments and that’s what makes you different and fun. I get the fact that these are fairly high end speakers but comparisons with top performers in the VFM segment such as Polk R700 would be useful just to understand the gap between the tiers. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Happy Sunday from Ottawa 🇨🇦 and all the best to you, Andrew and Kristi!
Thank you for joining us Matthew!
I own the Anthem STR integrated with the MA Platinum II 200 and even do mine are last models, what you described is more or less IMO applicable to the PL II200. Other than getting a great deal when I purchase them my priority was on speakers with no treble fatigue, controlled articulated bass and these are definitely that. I do get what you meen on the competition at this price point, but I will say I am one of the few that likes more traditional look than WOW factor on speaker looks. Great review like always, thanks.👍👍
Thank you for the awesome review! Curious if you will be reviewing the Totem Metal V2 speakers one day? Would love to hear both your thoughts. The speakers have no crossover.
Good review and love the dialogue after even more. There's nuance to everything. Everyones ear is different as well as their wallets.
Firstly, most hardcore audiophiles, at least the wealthier ones, wouldn't consider these or even the latest B&W 800 series to be proper fully-fledged 'high-end' audio.
Brands like Tidal, Kharma, Borresen, Wilson Benesch, Vivid Audio, Rockport, Avalon etc, they are what your Porsche/Ferrari buyer is far more likely to opt for if s/he is as passionate about music as they are about cars.
And while I would agree that speakers at the price level of the MA Platinums or KEF Metas do indeed sound better than ever there is still a significant gap sonically between them and the real cost-no-object stuff. It's nice to sometines imagine that there isn't but it just ain't so...
Finally, I did recently hear at some length the Yamaha NS-2000A that Andrew mentions and I thought they were an absolute knockout. I currently run big active ATCs but I firmly believe you could build an exceptional sounding high value system around the NSs.
Cheers, thx for all your hard work
I’m currently considering buying the Yamaha ns2000a .
Placing each speaker properly into its point in a continuous river of speakers using pricing, looks, build, sound structure, tonality, visual appeal, branding, etc... etc... has got to be the hardest thing to do for a plethora of audiophiles and Robert in Iowa. I think your audience, me included, understand the nuances of these comparisons and appreciate you and Kristy trying to bring all this forward to an understandable review. I think you guys do a fantastic job and I will always look forward to hearing and seeing what comes next.
Well done! 🎉 I'm interested to know if you will be reviewing the Gold towers.
Hi Andrew and Kristi,
I am still in love with my Kef R11 Metas paired with my Rogue Audio Cronus Magnum III and changed the preamp tube 12AU7 side to a Vintage Telefunken ECC82 smooth smooth plate 1950-1960s version. This thing is a Killer. By comparison, i had the Monitor Audio Golds before likewise the Elysian 4's.
Good morning, great review and topic. I bought the Klipsch Cornwall IVs after the review from you guys as well as listening to them first. For me, jumping from mid tier to high end it has to have a unique sound as well as design. For the price of these, they don't stand out from others of lesser price. My expectation is that I'm getting that wow factor visually and sonically.
The biggest problem with the Platinums is they look plain. It's very much like a Lexus ES which is just a nice Toyota Camry. Once you're in this price range, not only must your speakers sound good, they also have to look spectacular and be a marvel of modern engineering. The B&W 800s look and sound spectacular. The Focal Sopras look and sound spectacular. The Monitor Platinums look like Monitor Golds with maybe a little more polish.
do you think the Anthem STR would be a good pairing for these speakers? you recommend it and I´m looking between the platinum 200 and 300, do you think it will be able to drive them well.
The A TEAM in Audio does it again!!!
Your comments on how to tweek preamps settings to improve some older recordings, helps setting up the equalization on different presets
Thanks for this timely review. I am currently auditioning the B&W 805 Series and the MA Gold and Platinum. While Andrew touched on room and supporting gear issues, I would have liked to have heard more. Any thoughts would be welcome.
Outstanding and transparent content…super relatable…thanks!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey I'm liking the measurements for the speaker positions , and loudness you listened at
Amaaaaaaazing video once again!
Thanks!
Am a fan of monitor audio speakers ,good sound ,great build .To me they pair really well with audiolab amps
I love Kristi's input 👍 Great review again guys 💯
I love it too!
Excellent discussion I own the Monitor Audio Gold 100s in Piano Ebony. The line below the Platinums but above the silver. They are bookshelf speakers and look like the top half of those platinum 200s. These aren't anywhere near as expensive as the Platinums. But they are fantastic sounding to me. I'm too poor to touch high end products....but I'm sure those platinums are worth the money sonically.
Big league review Andrew. I'm thrilled that you continue to venture into true high end speakers and components. You may want to try to get your hands on a pair of Paradigm Persona 3f or 5f speakers. I promise that paired with Anthem STR integrated (sister brand to Paradigm) and a quality subwoofer (10 or 12') the Personas will be on your wow list. The AMT tweeter in the Platinum 200 delivers excellent detail, but is a bit pronounced depending on the recording. The Personas have Beryllium midrange and tweeter, they deliver crystal clear transparency without harshness or bringing too much attention to the speaker rather than the music. I fully understand your struggle with high cost speakers and components (above $10k) in comparison with those in the sweet spot of $3-6K, that deliver 85% of the higher cost items. However, for those of us who can afford the higher cost items that deliver a 10 to 15% sonic improvement they're worth it. So please, don't give up on the high end. Thank you both.
If you had to pick between these and the Focal Kanta NO 3’s which one would you pick?
Great review as always! Quick question - can you tell me what you mean by good bass definition and how to listen for it?
LOVE your reviews! I have a question I hope you can reply to and answer: I bought a pair of Monitor Audio Bronze 100's and they SHIMMER when driven by my old Teac AG-H300 receiver. I love them. Haven't heard that kind of presence before. I hooked them up to my Emotiva BasX Ta2 and besides the solid bass, the mids and highs sound lifeless no matter the tone settings. Am I doing something wrong or is it just a bad match? THANK YOU!
Listened to them yesterday for 2 hours at a dealer show. With a pathos class a amplifier and auralic streaming. Wow. Really nice aounding indeed.
I have the Monitor Audio Platinums speakers, and they are awesome!!
That's great! I think they're really good speakers myself!
Which amp? How they sound in low level volume 60db
THANKS GREAT REVIEW AS ALWAYS.
I have the platinum 100 3g and I can say. I find that Monitor Audio may not be best in one category of music but they are excellent allrounders, from instrumental to electronic music . Jazz, classic to rock, pop, hip hop. Clear midrange, good, extended high without being bright and excellent bass from a book shelf. For my room 12 x 14. I don’t need a sub.
Happy Sunday, good people! Nice to see another Anthem piece on your bench. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the STR line. Your review of the MRX 740 convinced me to hold my money until the fan noise and mobile app issues are sorted.
In the realm of speakers, neutrality is the real value (my fiancée is a brass player). With that in mind, I outfitted us with a kit of Cambridge Audio SX-80s and Aeros on stands, with the SX-70 center. I know this is a budget kit, but to my ears, it’s 85% of the Wharfdale sound for pennies on the dollar.
It’s all about putting your money where it’s most valuable. We might want to go to Tokyo to hear some jazz, or spend a weekend in Berlin with the Philharmonic…
Great Discussion Guys, I’m very happy with my Sonos Arc One SL + Sub Mini Setup :)
Great review and insights. Any chance of a review of the Marten Oscar Trio which would fall into a similar category and price as the KEF R11 Meta and the MA PL200?
You know what? I think everything in hifi sounds good. You’re probably going to think I’m nuts however I have an insignia NS-STR514 hooked up to a set of Cerwin Vega re-38’s and they raise the hair on my arm’s every time. Never fails. Maybe it’s my hearing. I don’t think I have ever heard a pair of speakers sound bad. I have Klipsch , Fisher, Pioneer, Kenwood, Jbl and Cerwin Vega and love them all. You guys have a great channel here. I watch it every week. In my opinion I feel you guys are pretty much the most professional in talking hifi on TH-cam. Keep up the great work.
JD had to say hey just for that Handsome boy in your profile pic. I’m with you. I love hearing all kinds of different rigs. Those CV’s are probably raising that arm hair physically…😂🍻
Gotta tell you, was not at all interested in these speakers due to the price. But the conversation at the end crystallised for me why this channel is so great. The dichotomy between the two of you means every now and then, we really get a deep dive into some of the big (first world, I know) issues we all have trying to pick one over the other. Andrew really nailed it for me with the analogy of the speakers on an island. We are living in a golden era where there are so many fantastic products. The real issue is can you stop yourself from looking to the left.
The theory you're only as good as the people you work with is exemplified here. Every reviewer would be elevated if they had a Kristi.
Great review and discussion as always Andrew and Kristi. I find the latest Platinum series to be a little over styled, perhaps the Gold series is a good cost compromise if you want the MPD tweeter with slightly less flashy looks.. Question for you both: Do you prefer the MPD tweeter or the MA traditional gold dome as in the Silver 500 7g??
Love you content, I was wondering you usually add the link to the product we see ,and my wife had bought some of them on your Amazon page but you never add or talk about your table.
Great review and always love your comparisons.
@michael-ir8cj Why do you continue to reply to comments speaking as if you are a part of this channel's team? This is getting weird. Please stop or I will have to take more serious actions.
@jamesbaranowski8755 Thank you for the thoughtful comment. Please note this person is NOT affiliated with this channel in any way.
Great review Andrew/Kristi! Quick question on how the bass compares against the Cornwalls? Also how does the bass on the Cornwalls compares against the Transpulse? Where I live, there are no stores where I can audition the Cornwalls, but I have heard the Heresy and I do love the sound.
Very interesting and thought provoking review. I'm running the Monitor Audio Gold 300s with Marantz Model 30 + SACD 30N.
The synergy between the warmth of the Marantz sound and the dynamics and resolution of the Monitor Audios float my boat.
And in UK, Gold 300s are half the price of Platinum 200s and the finish/appearance is equal and equally exquisite. They're also very similar in size.
Don't doubt the Platinum with better amplification will sound 'better' - as you say, the buyer has a reasonable expectation to get more if one pays more.
The question is how much one values the 'improvement' at effectively double the total price?
Keep up the good work guys :)
It's small improvements. You get slightly better motor structure for the bass (same cones though). You get the "tapered midrange chamber". How much will that be audible? Idk. Likely a stronger cabinet.
But at 2.2x the cost it is a lot to swallow
I love the clarity & the question evolving from that clarity that Kristi brings to the review. The perception of value & what the components of that perception in the 2023, especially if you wish to sell that product. Andrew makes valid points, which i happen to agree with. There are political elements to the equation, whether rational or not.
I love towers. I found the b&w you reviewed Last time so beautyfull and I'm sur the monitor audio are playing even better.
I have a pair of siver 8 That i appreciate very much, even when powered with Cambridge audio H.C amp.
Your reviews make me dream high end😅
Love seeing higher end reviews like this! For my take at this price point a buyer should expect a great sounding speaker, even if the sound signature has a slightly different profile to other speakers in the same range. To an extent it comes down to cabinetry and the visual signature as much as the sound. Ferrari is a great example of that as you mentioned. Pininfarina matters as much as Binnoto.
Hello from Montreal, thanks for the great analyses, the Totem Metal v2 is another good comparison especially paired with the Anthem. All the best
spot on, people dont understand that the gap between a good and amazing system is a grand canyon of spending, the amp, the cords and stair step of speakers.
everyone has their unique tastes. Platinum 200 3G will attract admirers.
This tier is right where I am. It doesn’t get enough attention because a lot of people focus on the attention grabbing high end and the more accessible stuff for most people. I think it’s a good place to start looking for diminishing returns and am in paralysis by analysis mode.
Good morning friends! I really appreciate the discussion, honesty, and delving into your thoughts at the end. Thanks for keeping it all in there and have a great weekend!
Thanks for watching through to the end!
Somehow I forgot to write that I do really like that finish on these..
@@andrewrobinsonreviewsit's always the best part and what sets your channel apart!
Context could be strengthened by looping back when comparing the others you mentioned by providing your takes on the issues of impedence, sensitivity, how finicky these and the others play with other amps/gear, warranty, resale (depreciation), and doing this is an excel chart format. Since gear changes all the time, I for one do not like gear that does not play well with many, various types of amps. The 14 grand for example might be much easier ro swallow if the speakers were for example 94 sensitive, and sounded great on many amps less than 10 grand. Also with the rapid advances in class D for example, it would be great to see how these sound moving that direction. I'm very grateful for your channel. Great review and summary from you both!
I have a pair of Monitor Audio's silver 5i from the late 90s that i picked up two or three years ago. Until then i had never heard of the brand and i am well aware that they aren't even in the same universe with the 200s they are my favorite small tower. Sound great with any amp but with the right one they sing! Great review guys!
Monitor audio has tripled the price of their silver line speakers since then.
I had the Silver 8i towers. I wish I still had the Silver 8i towers. That's one speaker I regret selling.
@@wswsn7396 That's because 100GBP from 1997 is now worth 230GBP. It's called inflation.
Hello Andrew. Great review. How would I connect a subwoofer to a Yamaha RX-V6A for music. Thanks
Can't wait to hear your opinion on the Anthem Integrated and Classé stereo amp. Here's hoping you're able to audition the PS Audio aspen FR20, Yamaha NS-5000 and Totem Acoustic Element Metal v2.
Good review, you should have a listen to the Danish brand of speakers Borresen , their X3 tower is spectacular. One of their entry level range. Looks fabulous too.
Good convo. Was a bit surprised after the Polk R700 conversation to not have that as part of this one. Looks like the fit and finish of this is nicer. The Polk has a similar two bass drivers, one mid, one tweeter set up. Would you say spending more for the music is worth it, or is your convo really at this price you are past the music portion and just really care about the ego part of owing something like this?
Good morning, guys. I agree with your review I love monitor audio ..
Thanks for watching, we love MA too.
Dang....wow!!! This is challenging. This is what happens when you get to high end (like Kristi says). Is it worth it? This is where your motto comes in...no one has to like the sound of your system but you. I recently moved from my P-FRs to Whispers, and there are things that each does better than the other. The exclusivity issue is true! Monitor Audio macassar ebony is beautiful...but screaming special.....that's another story. great and challenging review!!!!❤😊😊
I"m really hoping you get a chance to review the new Wharfedale Dovedale soon.
Good Morning Andrew and Christy. I have recently been watching a few of Your reviews on floor standing speakers and found them very helpful. In Your review of the wharfedale Elysian You commented that in terms of sonic benefits if the Elysian was a perfect 10 then the polk R700 was a solid 9. How does the polk R700 rate against the monitor audio platinum 200 3g .
Also I know that both of You loved the Wharfedale Lintons and it was also Your product of the Year. While Your Polk R700 missed out on a direct comparison to the Lintons in comments though You did mention that the Lintons are more refined and warmer. My Question is if You were to choose between the Lintons with stands and the R700 only from a sonic perspective and assuming that the price points were the same and not factoring in the finish or looks, which one would You choose and Why?
Preferred these or q acoustics concept 500 mostly?
As someone who (finally) took delivery of a pair of Wilson speakers, it was pride of ownership; Wilson was always an aspirational brand to me. I cross shopped SabrinaX against Magico A3s, and while the Magicos didn’t sound as good to me, the sound itself didn’t justify spending an additional 6k on the Wilsons. It was the other intangibles I mentioned that sealed the deal.
How would they compare to Martins XT f100 as they are similar drivers and you liked their low end too?
One of the advantages of the Wharfedale is that they are much less amplifier fussy. I drive mine with a 12.5 watt 300b tube amp and a 215w solid state and they sound great with both.
I would certainly not describe them as lumbering at all.
The divide between hi end and mid fi is increasing getting closer. You should do a group test comparing b&w 804. kef reference 3, Sonus Faber Olympics Nova and possibly revel Performa 3 be
Great point about that B&W series made in England
It’s hard but fun eh? This is a fun hobby, I’m not in the market for new speakers ( just got Heresy IV’s) but I enjoy watching these reviews. Fun
