Here's a good calendar to use for looking up moon phases and signs. It defaults to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) so make sure to set it to your time zone:

At one point, I said the new moon rises at sunset and sets and sunrise. It should say the new moon rises at sunrise and sets at sunset.
