    I get a lot of questions about transportation in NZ, so I hope this video is helpful! Overall, I think buses are cheaper but are less convenient (on a schedule, don't go everywhere), while cars/vans give the most freedom and convenience but come with the biggest costs and risks. It's just up to you to weigh the pros/cons for what matters most to you!

    I decided to use the public transportation for my recent trip to New Zealand instead of driving. It saved me SO much money, like NZ$458 versus over NZ$1500 for a hire car plus petrol. I used the Intercity Bus all over and it was perfect...very efficient and always on time. Also used the ferries and Air NZ and the local bus in Auckland, Waiheke Island, Wellington, Queenstown...so much easier than the last two times I was there doing all my own driving! Never had to worry about finding a parking place and paying for parking! Thanks for another great bideo, Mari. 👍

      Thanks for sharing your experience, Diane! I'm with you, when I first came and traveled around I used mainly buses and found them efficient and cheap!

    Travelling around Auckland I would prefer the trains or ferries where possible least packed when off peak better seating and more leg room. Buses are adequate though.

    Tourists often fly in to Akl and out of Chch, so there are some advantages to going Chch-Akl instead. Fewer people on coaches & tour buses, vehicles often get sold from Chch, and if you're in a rush you can get relocation vehicles for just the cost of the petrol.

    Hi Mari, Now this is definitely a favourite video for me. Very informative. I really enjoy riding public transport. Wellington also has the cable car from the city up to Kelburn. I have actually even ridden the earlier cable cars prior to the line closing in 1978. Also, I was there in 1979, when they reopened the Kelburn line using brand new Swiss built cable cars and I rode on one of the first ones running. Incidentally, did you ever manage to ride the trolley buses in Wellington, prior to their closure in October 2017? Wellington suburban electric trains are quite good to use and there are new suburban electric trains now running in Auckland. Years ago, they used to have trains running from Christchurch to Lyttleton. Thanks again for sharing. All the best. Robert.

      No, I never got to ride the trolley buses. And I haven't ridden on the cable car yet either! Next time!

      Hi Mari, Here are links to Wellington's cable car and trolley buses. The trolley bus ride is to Island Bay from Wellington. Island Bay is where my aunt and uncle used to live. Sadly, the Wellington trolley bus system was closed down in October 2017. All the best. Robert. th-cam.com/video/1SV7WUQtvko/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/wZMIzmoo6bc/w-d-xo.html

    You are worth your weight in gold and these videos are super timely. Brava! I'm heading to NZ for January 2019--traveling with carryon only from the U.S. Every ounce counts. Should I bring a sleep sack, microfiber towel, and clothesline for hostels? If most hostels provide them, I'll leave them at home. Please let me know. Your videos are spot on, and I'm so glad you're happy in New Zealand!

    • @mari.johnson
      @mari.johnson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It makes me so happy that these videos are helpful to you! For your questions - you don't need to bring a sleep sack (most hostels actually don't allow them), yes to a towel (unless you want to pay for one each time), and no to a clothesline (Most hostels will have something for this). Nice work with carry on only!

    Hi Mari, A few more logistics questions. Do people use Uber in NZ? If not, what is the alternative for trips within a town? Is Airbnb widely used in NZ? If not, what alternative do you recommend? Lastly, what’s the best website for booking hostels in NZ? Thanks! Courtney

    • @mari.johnson
      @mari.johnson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, there’s Uber! There’s a new one I’ve just seen called Ola as well. Airbnb is used too. For hostels I like to use HostelWorld to search and read reviews then usually book directly with the hostel I choose. 😊

    We've got trains called Intercity here in Germany. But I hope the New Zealand buses are more in time and reliable than our trains... 😑😅

    • @mari.johnson
      @mari.johnson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      haha but I thought everything was so efficient in Germany! 🙌

    • @goateyephotography808
      @goateyephotography808 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish it was. Our train company reported a new negative record in train punctuality and reliability this year. I think it was about... 77% or so. And when you take into consideration that a train here is declared as "in time" when it is actually up to 10 minutes late, well... It's a shame. 😑 I don't know how Japan manages that with their famous high speed trains - they are actually in time every time. Maybe they are aliens...? 🤣

    • @dianes4858

    • @mari.johnson
      @mari.johnson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that’s fine! Just as long as you’re comfortable driving on the roads here and make sure to take breaks. It could end up being more expensive than buses, so just depends on your budget!
