I just wanted to add (as a NZ local) that haggling isn't a thing at opshops ("thift stores") like you said. They function as regular stores with set prices, i'd never try to haggle at one. The only place I think you could haggle would be things like facebook marketplace, garage sales etc.
Also sunblock like you said is super important especially in summer. SPF 30 at a MINIMUM.

If you want to try a meat pie get one from a BP petrol station, most of them have a Cafe called Wild Bean (really good coffee too), and they are consistently good across the country - if you're going to an independent bakery it can be hit or miss if you get a tasty pie or not.
Speaking of Cafes I can't believe you didn't mention our coffee. Kiwis are big time into good coffee. We have great barista coffee everywhere. If you love coffee please don't just go to Starbucks while you're here, I'd liken that to going to Paris and only eating at McDonalds, try the local Cafes.

    • @AlexanderAyling
      @AlexanderAyling  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Very true. Wild Bean has great pies and a solid flat white, but I always pop into small cafes to try their coffee :)

I would love to visit NZ. It is in my bucket list and I am entering my mid-50s, I think this is a great time to do it while I can walk well and are healthy. Seeing friends and acquaintances die in their 50s have me thinking life and health are not guaranteed. I used to follow Vagabond Brothers. Glad I found you again! 🤩

I feel very prepared now to visit a country I have no immediate plans to travel to 😅. One tip for anyone wanting to learn how to distinguish NZ and Australian English: there are a few differences but the most reliable one is in the short 'i' (what linguists call the KIT vowel): it basically sounds like 'uh' in NZ English. So fish is 'fush'! I remember the first time I encountered someone with a very strong Kiwi accent, an older lady who was visiting family in Northern England. I had so much trouble understanding her! Now I know a lot more about accents and I keep wondering how much better I would do with her accent now ...

@@AlexanderAyling we are venturing to Stewart Island and Fiordland soon. I'm not looking forward to meeting the sandflies while down there. We are taking heaps of insect repellent, wearing light coloured clothing and praying our blood isn't desirable. Can't wait to see Doubtful and Milford Sounds. Fingers crossed we see a kiwi in the wild on Stewart Island while on a tour. Unfortunately it's expensive been a tourist in NZ. I'm sure the scenery will be breathtaking and so worth it

Further south doesn't necessarily mean a colder climate - in the winter yes but in the summer no. Canterbury has the most of the highest temperatures recorded in NZ. Having lived in both islands, Christchurch is definitely hotter and more often hot than much of the North Island. Although, we don't get as much of the humidity down here :)

NZ is far and away the best choice of places to live for the landscape, but mostly because of the people. Sane, reasonable, responsible is how most of them conduct themselves. If you visit, you'll want to live there.

So it is ironic that so many promote immigration as it is only beneficial, when there are pros and cons. You will find the happiest countries are those with the least amount of immigrants.
Stated by an immigrant to America, who understands the benefits of immigration but has experienced the problems of uncontrolled immigration and illegal immigration. When you fill a house with many that don't love the house, it is detrimental.

Bro you sure know your stuff and were on point with everything that you covered. As a native I was really surprised!
And I swear by pure coincidence I was eating a couple of vegemite sandwiches while seeing you cover it..📺 😮
I'm also surprised you were able to cram so many things into a half an hour, including a short tid bit on my hometown Gisborne
Btw, the Tip Top brand which makes the Hokey Pokey flavor.. Well all the flavors they make are really nice!
I wish you tried Goody Goody gum drops.. I think your wife would've went bananas over it. But yeah, good on you for mentioning that flavor, you brought back memories of eating it, and where I was actually memorizing the taste in my mouth..😋Crazy!!..
I do wish you made a way longer vid covering more of the country, but thanks for what you did do.. That was awesome!
Thanks again, I even learned a few things from watching your video.. I really need to get out more.. 🤦‍♂️

I'll be visiting from the UK in February, it will be my 6th visit to my son who lives in Whanganui which is 2/3 of the way between Auckland and Wellington. This is a great place much underrated by Kiwis.
When the visibility is good you can see Ruapehu and Taranaki from the tower on Durie Hill and it actually has a lot of art deco buildings as well as the Whanganui river which you can explore by kayak or take an excursion on the historic Waimarie paddle steamer. There is much more to this 'river city' so give it a go!

NZ coins are slightly different as well. There is NO Quarter. NZ does have the 20 cent piece, but not a 25 cent piece. Also there are no pennies so if you pay cash, your total is rounded to the nearest 5 cents. If you pay by debit (EFTPOS) or credit card then you pay down to the last penny!! Also if you do pay by debit card (EFTPOS) then you will also be paying currency conversion fees as well. It's cheaper to cash out one time at an ATM Machine (pay 1 conversion fee) and then pay cash for the small things like food, and when you are out in the country (rural) or at a local farmers market. Make sure that your Debit card has a PLUS logo on the back. That should allow you to use the card in an ATM machine.
I found Marmite to be somewhat bitter and I grew up eating Vegemite on toast. I also LOVE L&P the fizzy soft drink - it was my fav fizzy when I was a child and an adult before I left NZ. L&P is not available outside NZ. I have not tasted it for 20+ years!!

Great video, just a heads up, a number of things like Hockey Pockey ice cream exist in Australia. So almost just NZ, but almost always AUS and NZ for most things commercially sold, driving rules, slang like togs etc. FYI marmite is from the UK.

meat and fish pies have been around in the UK since before America was discovered. Marmite comes from UK many things in New Zealand and Australia are from the UK due to colonisation.. When I lived in the US, I was often asked if I was Australian which is in comprehensible as the difference between the two is almost the same as UK and US New Zealanders accent is closer to UK than Australia accept for the way Kiwi's pronounce the letter "e", they always pronounce it as "ee" eg wheere neext . Very strange.

Tip # 1 : New Zealand has roads with lots of corners and windies locals are used to them - if you are going under speed limit and there is more than one car behind you pull over and let them pass . Dont cause road rage you can cause accidents !
#2 Always cheak your reaview mirrow constantly!
#3Pull over if you want to take in the view.
#4 If a car is following closely behind you it 90% of the time means they want to be traveling at a faster speed than you - pull over.
#5 if you are the leader of a row of 10 cars going 70ks in a 100 k zone ,you are being a dick Pull over!!.

There are tips that you didn't mentioned being -
    a. credit card surcharges apply at the hotels and selected restaurants. From the 1 Nov 22, the government has passed the law that processing banks have to reduce business merchant and contactless 'tap & pay' transaction fees, so credit card surcharges should disappear.
    b. Besides us a a credit card, a person can use Mastercard or Visa debit cards and Mastercard/Visa multiple currency travel cards.
    c. Contactless 'tap & pay' payment use is widely used through out the country.
    c. The country does have a national 'book and travel' regional, inter-regional and long distance coach network covering both the South and North Islands, regular inter-island ferry services between the North and South Island and between the South Island and Stewart Island. You didn't mentioned the the 3 long distance 'scenic' passenger trains services between Auckland and Wellington, Christchurch and Picton that connects with inter-island ferry service between the North and South Islands and Christchurch and Greymouth located on the west coast of the South Island.
    d. You neglected to say that Auckland and Wellington regions have good integrated rail, bus and ferry services within their respective regions.
    e. Your didn't mentioned the alpine desert region of the MacKenize Basin in the South Island.. The 'desert' on the volcanic plateau located in the central North Island is actually an alpine desert due to its elevation. Also you didn't mentioned the alpine rain forests along the southern part of the South Island's west coast.
    f. You seem to want to promote dirty tourism travel despite the government moving towards 50% reduction in carbon and other gas emissions by 2035, hence promoting sustainable, environmentally friendly 'green' tourism.

    • @AlexanderAyling
      @AlexanderAyling  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Do you by any chance have any recommendations of touring agencies where singles can come join others for different bucket lists? Also, do you happen to know about beach volleyball communities there?
