  • Boxcar Willie - Wabash Cannonball (live)
Boxcar Willie, born as Lecil Travis Martin (September 1, 1931 -- April 12, 1999) was an American country music singer, who sang in the "old-time hobo" music style, complete with dirty face, overalls, and a floppy hat. "Boxcar Willie" was originally a character in a ballad he wrote, but he later adopted it as his own stage name.
In 1976, Martin left the Air Force and became a full-time performer.
He went on to become a star in country music, selling more than 10 million records, tapes and CDs worldwide. In 1981, Martin achieved a professional landmark by being inducted into the Grand Ole Opry as its 60th member.

    Big Bo here,
    RIP box car
I can remember when I was fifteen or sixteen years old
    Around 1984
Me and a couple family members went to see boxcar in concert in the old state theater in Uniontown Pa
Well boxcar was just getting rolling on his great career then that started with infomercial that he had at that time
I can remember him opening up for t.g.shepard at that time
    Well boxcar played
    Greatly
    Dang
    Then T.G started
    Low and behold
Us country hillbilly folks wanted boxcar back
    So we started chanting
    Boxcar
    Boxcar
    Over powering the music
We finally figured out boxcar was signing autographs
    In the lobby
So about three fourths of us left to see boxcar before he left town
Never too listen to rest of show
I bet boxcar felt good that day
    RIP
    Love you boxcar
    Big Bo
    One of Fayette counties finest
    Going back to videos
    Over and out
    Good budy

I went to a country music festival in Frankfurt Germany in the early eighties and he was there, along with Tammy Wynette and a couple of other acts.

I wish the whole intro wasn't chopped...it was a truly heartfelt well-wish to Wilie's good friend Roy Acuff.

This is my favourite Box Car Willie song. Funny story, the first cassette I ever bought was a compilation of his greatest hits when I was 11 but I never told my friends as they would have teased me about liking"old people's music" Now over here in Northern Ireland all ages likes Country Music.🤣Funny how things come full circle from you're 11 to you are 49 years old when even half of the local country music stars are half your age. I wonder.is it like that in other countries?

In my possession I have an old casette tape, one side is Slim Dusty, a well-known Australian country music artist, and on the other side was one-half of an album that no-one knew who sang on it, I saved it from being taped over. The tape is of Boxcar Willie in concert and it is this exact version of Wabash Cannonball that he's singing. Thankyou for posting it.
