I'm so happy the team at SMMK are working to bring life to the MMX. It was definitely more than a single person could do alone even with online help from others.
The more that I learn about this, the more that I know it was the correct decision to do a rewrite on it. It's still good that it gets to live, finally.
I've always love the aesthetics and ideas of the MMX, and happy these guys are doing it. The MM ver. 3 don't really like the utilitarian look of it, all the poetry has been stripped out by cold lifeless engineering. Subscribed and will be looking forward to the MMX completion
Amazing work!! Thank you so much for saving this beauty from Martin's basement. Thank you for fixing it. And thank you for ditching these stupid fingers.
Great work, team! It's bittersweet to see the MMX being fixed and finalized at last, with great labor, but knowing it was destined for so much more. Thank you for crossing that finish line for us!
It's amazing the work you all have done! MMX is looking so much more complete now and that is what I always wanted to see, but now I see how much work Martin had done, I am once again in awe. Thank you for continuing the work, it means so much.
Love these updates! Thanks for this. Can't wait to hear it play! Also really liked hearing lots of people explaining stuff, really shows how many people are involved!
It‘s so nice to see you guys finishing the MMX and completing the things Martin wasn‘t willing because of foul excuses like „timing“ and „stangfailure“… Thanks for all the work you are putting into the MMX 👏🏻👏🏻
Another great update, its so much fun to see the team bringing the MMX to life! thank you for sharing it. One day I hope to be able to come and see the museum, and the marble machines!
The English language is not able to capture the intricate, elegant, overcomplicated and ultimately doomed beauty of this mechanism. Surely there is no word, in any language? Anyway, you are all to be congratulated. Would it go too far to say that millions are indebted to you? For me at least, this has been a heroic undertaking by you all, but most of all by far, from Martin - Frankenstein reflected by his beautiful monster.
thank god, I always thought the kinetic fingers were very ugly even if made to be beautiful. Everything else on the machine served a function for creating the music, so there was always this >one of these things is not like the other< feeling, it broke one of the design rules imo
are you redesigning any parts and paths entirely, or just tweaking the elements Martin got stuck on? there are some fundamental flaws with the MMX (magnet lift, divider, etc) but there are 2 ways in my mind it can work 1. Make the most final condition work without overhaul 2. Overhaul the machine, using most of MM3's learnings but use the old frame, prog wheel, and drivetrain i'd love to see both, but i know option 1 is not going to work long term
As we were working on it as a museum piece there were goals and limits set by the museum. Think of artefact conservation, where necessary restoration, but not replacing the artefact with a completely different one. One of the goals was getting the MMX to a playable state, so finishing it to the degree that all instruments are playable and that the marble loop is closed. Major changes of the function of the MMX were not an option, as that would modify the machine to a significant degree. But we could tweak things, add parts, and replace parts - as we did for the MRL1, its intro, and its transition to MRL2 as well as the vibraphone marble track where we put on Martin's previous version. (Here is one of the comments in regard to the conservation/modification border, th-cam.com/video/hq2YIXOhtHc/w-d-xo.html&lc=UgwBuYljKo_9E-m6L714AaABAg.9vuOp9lZEKt9vvBirimPro)
@@Koffeinsuechtigi okay, so keeping most flaws intact, returning it to the states where Martin had it working but not necessarily reliable, like the Valse de Amalie video and the drum loop marble test videos, i like that
@@xymaryai8283, the flaws that remain are inherent, and yep, they stay. What we could modify and improve we did, and that makes the machine work ok enough for what is expected of it now.
Why are you making wooden pressure routes again when you can use bending pipes? I remember Martin went away from this design because clock-release mechanism can deal with all the pressure.
@@MrWongle No, that issue has been solved by Martin when he listened to the community as they came up with a "height-independent marble divider". See his videos "Engineering Basics: The Best Part Is No Part", "Ultimate Material Showdown", and "The New Marble Divider is a Success!".
Now the original question: As the video says: Pipe bending is annoying, so you want to do only the smallest amount you can get away with. The other practical reason is hinted at by @ muharremsuz: the escapement gates cannot deal with too high pressure. The original "Matrix sentinel" gates simply jammed due to marble pressure, but while the clock escapement gates actually use pressure to function and hence can deal a lot better with it, they still have a failure point. Too high pressure forces the escapement to move, at which point the gate will keep dropping marbles automatically until the stack of marbles above it has decreased and the pressure gets lower.
Here's Martin's demonstration of high pressure on the escapement gates - this can still occur: th-cam.com/video/0b-B_Bg31Zg/w-d-xo.html Martin did improve the escapement gate a little after that by adding a machine screw as a less slick pallet, but there's still a limit we can hit.

Honestly the new machine Wintergatan is making is not as cool as this one. I'm really happy to know you took over the project
Thank you all for working to bring the MMX to life!
Amazing work!!
Thank you so much for saving this beauty from Martin's basement.
Thank you for fixing it.
And thank you for ditching these stupid fingers.
Lol stupid fingers 😂
I love how marble machine x has basically become legacy equipment now LOL
The mighty Nail and Gear! Hello Tim!
Hello, fellow Tim! :D
There's literally dozens of us.
Probably even scores^^
Can't wait for the next episode! 🤞😅
Finally some ACTUAL content, thanks!
I am so happy to see it being completed. I really love the look and design of this MMX.
With all components installed, the machine is just so beautiful. Great to see it being finished!
Great work, team! It's bittersweet to see the MMX being fixed and finalized at last, with great labor, but knowing it was destined for so much more. Thank you for crossing that finish line for us!
The best part about this is ditching the kinetic fingers for something much simpler. 😂 you guys are doing great work. ❤
It's amazing the work you all have done! MMX is looking so much more complete now and that is what I always wanted to see, but now I see how much work Martin had done, I am once again in awe.

Thank you for all your effort on this project! It has been enjoyable and inspirational to see the MMX enter this new phase and second life!
It‘s so nice to see you guys finishing the MMX and completing the things Martin wasn‘t willing because of foul excuses like „timing“ and „stangfailure“…
Thanks for all the work you are putting into the MMX 👏🏻👏🏻
LOL, of course it would take a real-life SIEGFRIED to slay the MMX dragon!
Another great update, its so much fun to see the team bringing the MMX to life! thank you for sharing it. One day I hope to be able to come and see the museum, and the marble machines!
Its so awesome that you are continuing Martins project! So happy to follow.

Incredible work. I appreciate your efforts so much
Thank you so much for putting in all this amazing effort so that we could just come in for the Meet-up and play the MMX ❤
You're welcome :D
The mighty nail and gear!!!
Looks great! Nice work
Impresive work 👍🎉
"Forego the kinetic fingers" That was the best thing I've heard in a long long time.
Rip to the kinetics fingers…
Exciting progress!
4:48 HI Nation lets go
Hello Tim!
Great work, team!
Well done!
While i respect Martin's vision and prowess, i never was a fan of the fingers. Glad the team did something else.
Good going guys!
MMX ex angst. Yea!
Honestly, just proof martin let perfect get in the way of good enough
What do you mean by that? Seems like there's been massive redesign required here.
@Cyrribrae not massive. Just accepting solutions that are outside the initial vision
So exciting
I like how the vibraphone droppers resemble a typewriter.
The MMX should play that typewriter song. LOL
@@billkeithchannelWhich one do you mean? We are currently seeking for covers and tunes we could play!
Incredible Work!
I wonder how many total parts there will be when MMX is fully built?

So you guys are fixing the old MMX while Martin builds a new one completely from scratch?
Yep!
Meetup 2023? That is so last year. Is this an old video that just got uploaded or did you mean 2024?
2023 is right, since we havent had time to finish this Episode back then. Stay tuned for the next Episode, there you can check out how it went!
Heya tried joining your discord both your link on the youtube and your website is invalid maybe its expired?
I'm glad this machine is going be be finished, it's just sad that Martin will probably be iterating forever and will never compete one himself....

Maybe one day it could play music all day.
Unpopular opinion: the kinetic fingers would have looked interesting and would have added even more to the unique personality of the machine
Out of all the Animusic videos the spider fingers is the creepiest. Gives me the chills.
Why are you making wooden pressure routes again when you can use bending pipes? I remember Martin went away from this design because clock-release mechanism can deal with all the pressure.
I watch a video i cant remember witch but clock relase deal most of pressure but not all
Isn't part of the issue keeping the marbles at exactly the same height so the seperator works

It's fundamentally just a shit design.
No, not kinetic fingers
