  • Fragrance is in a lot of personal care and household products, but what is fragrance, exactly?
Watch this video to learn what’s in the mystery ingredient called "fragrance."
Fragrance can be found in a lot of the things you use on your body and in your home. But what IS fragrance? What’s in the “fragrance” on the labels of products like hand sanitizer, shampoo and even some of the most unlikely household products?
Turns out, it’s not so easy to find out exactly what that word means, whether it’s used on the ingredient label of a product intended for its scent, like air freshener or cologne, or something you’d think wouldn’t be scented at all, like dental floss or tissue.
Companies don’t make it easy for you to know what fragrance contains. We unraveled the mystery for you. EWG fragrance guru, Carla, explains the ins and outs of fragrance.
Visit www.ewg.org to find out more about personal care products made without concerning ingredients.

Thank you so much for making this! It's difficult trying to educate family and friends on all the toxins in our products and world without sounding judgy on products they use or sounding fanatical (it's just impossible to unknow when you become aware). It's crazy how many products list all the things they are "free" of or taut themselves as natural yet have fragrance as an ingredient. Going to share this with them! Thank you EWG!

That is why I make much of my own skin care and health care...because of this. If you make you own products, you'll know what is ALL of it!!

thankfully, public pressure has made some industries change as you mentioned. We need to keep up the pressure for those changes. We have the ability to make things safe and healthy.

So annoying when products that didn't used to ever contain fragrance, like garbage bags, now do and sometimes don't list any type of scent or ingredients at all on the packaging. I have purchased and returned scented garbage bags because there was no way to tell they smelled until I opened the packaging. Yuck!

Unscented can be worse. I have my husband unscented name brand deodorant in 1992 and he got a rash. Call-in medical show doctor said the chemicals to prevent odor and perspiration are so stinky that instead of fragrance the cover ups are more toxic.

I used to like EWG better before they started attacking essential oils. Nobody makes a poison sumac essential oil. Why would you even bring that up unless can find an example of poisonous plants added to a product in the past 75 years? Yes, a person can be allergic to an essential oil. I have a friend who is allergic to lavender and, therefore, is allergic to lavender essential oil. She's the only person I know who is allergic to an essential oil. And yes, there are some essential oils that are too harsh to be placed directly on the skin and require a carrier oil. But people are rarely injured this way and there are no permanent impacts either. Essential oils are not carcinogenic or neurotoxic. You can gripe about organic ingredients when someone puts belladonna or poison oak in a product. But that's unlikely to happen. And it's easily avoidable if you only purchase from companies that divulge every single ingredient on their labels. The problem is that EWG scares people unnecessarily away from safe products so that they continue to use unsafe petrochemical products because they're afraid of smelling bad. And those products injure everyone else around them!
We'll reserve the advertising propaganda that's made people afraid of smelling "bad" for another discussion.
I'm sure the whole "essential oils are dangerous" crap came from the FDA or other industry-controlled agencies. Because those industries know that essential oils are a threat to their profiteering.
Fragrances are clearly getting stronger and stronger. Have you noticed this? They have become outrageously strong. When my neighbor does her laundry, it chokes me all the way to my front door and beyond. I can't enjoy a trip to the grocery store because people's colognes knock me out. And they smell AWFUL! People always comment on how great I smell. I am known for being great-smelling. But they comment when they are close to me, not when they are three aisles over at a store. All I wear is essential oils. You just don't know how good you can smell with natural essential oils when your olfactory senses are screwed up with all of the fragrances you use.
Yet another issue not mentioned in this video is that many fragrance ingredients have an opioid-like impact on the human brain. They're actually addictive. And this is not an accident. It's the same thing that's been done with cigarettes. Cigarette manufacturers add additional addictive ingredients beyond tobacco to keep their customers coming back for more. This is a known fact. Virtually every industry behaves like tobacco companies. The tobacco industry is no exception.
Just like you should only trust people who are honest with you, only trust companies that are candid with their ingredients.

If the word 'fragrance' is listed as an ingredient, chances are unsafe chemicals are hiding behind it.

The same way food producers do, we have to list all our ingredients why shouldn’t everyone else?? I personally tell all my customers and regulators exactly what I put on my crops, feed my cattle etc. and when I make a value added product to sell, I happily list my ingredients!
Our right to protect our bottom lines doesn’t trump our customers rights to know what they’re buying and putting on or in their bodies. Just be good to your customers, respect their rights to decide about their bodies and you will be supported with good sales.

Watch out for essential oils in products, they too need to be pure and unadulterated if you don’t want chemicals on your body. Most brand name products today have adulterated essential oils. Watch for green washing. Essential oil is a big buzz word on the market

99.99999999% of essential oils are toxic synthetics. The few ones that are available are so expensive that 90% of sheeple could not afford it. LITERALLY. You won't even find non-toxic ones anywhere since they are bought by people who got at least 100 mill in bank account. ;)

Is it better to use perfume on clothes? Not on the skin

    • @mikewhite8848
      @mikewhite8848 3 ปีที่แล้ว

It's way better because unknown chemicals go thru your pore's and into your blood stream when you spray it on skin. People have a bad habit of spraying thing's on their skin.

    • @karenscribner7031

Perfume on clothes is just as bad for your skin. The problem is when they took the phosphorus out of laundry detergent, the detergent did not remove body oil anymore. Clothes stink unless you add washing soda, baking soda and non chlorine bleach but you have to get the All free or the Oxi Clean with the green top or you get bombarded with more toxic chemicals. (Too much phosphorus in waterways and oceans was the fault of farmers, not clothes being washed.)
