Thank you so much for this series. By acknowledging the shortcomings of the past without sugarcoating or exaggeration - especially when our _teachings_ explicitly pointed in the right direction - we as Church can move forward, loving God above all, loving ourselves & loving our neighbours as we ought to. I'll never fully understand why an ideology as reductive as racism (as compared to xenophobia) began, and even more so persists today, especially among 2 groups of people who - for reasons beyond their control now - have far more in common than what sets them apart (and those differences aren't automatically bad either). That the Church today may be delivered & preserved from any notions of racial/ethnic superiority, racial/ethnic incapability, cultural hegemony and otherwise misplaced hatred, thus leading the world to respect the dignity of human life in all aspects, Lord hear us.

As a Catholic Haitian immigrant, I attributed the small percentage of black American Catholics to the fact that this country was founded by Protestants and the slaves then took on that religion. But as you clearly explained the Catholic Church hierarchy in the USA had little interest in bringing African Americans to the faith and that’s a shame. The teachings of Catholicism can penetrate and transform a human being in so many ways. God is in charge and he always transform evil into good in ways we did not expect. I could give everything I own to a black person and live on the streets as a homeless person and still be richer than the person I gave everything to. That’s a damn shame. I would still have more job opportunities. If I needed money, I would have friends and family who could help me out. I could still walk into any public place and not have people averting their eyes. I still wouldn’t have cops violently overreacting towards me out of fear because of the color of my skin. I’m white. I’ve never had a cop tell me to keep my hands on the wheel. I’ve never had to live off of government assistance because no one would hire me for fear of being lazy or a criminal. I’ve never had store owners eyeing me suspiciously. I’ve never lowered the property value of an entire neighborhood just by living there. I’m white. My lack of all these things and so much more doesn’t let me live a charmed life or have no difficulties or crosses. But it doesn’t hurt either. That’s what white privilege means. Having said all that, I don’t feel guilty about the color of my skin. It’s not about feeling guilty for things that happened in the past but being honest about how the ramifications of those things is still effecting people today.

Another teacher, the Business and Marketing teacher, harassed a black student student by asking him "Who owns you!"; the white teacher and all-white students all laughed at the only black student in the class that had nowhere to turn because the person that was supposed to be in charge (the school teacher) was the very person leading the bullying and harassing and a varsity wrestling coach gave an under-aged student-athlete a performance enhancing substance at a national wrestling tournament. •The black student and parent have NEVER been accused of any misconduct. •The Black student and Parent are being represented by The Cochran Firm (Detroit) attorney Mr. James King James.King@CochranFirmDetroit.com •The MDCR investigator is Mrs. Yvonne Sloan. I'm lakota, from pine ridge rez. South Dakota. I've ended up in Ohio. My people know about slavery and to this know to these days suffering still.
Catholic Saint Augustine Florida offered freedom to slaves at Fort Mose where the first recorded birth of a black baby in America took place.
