4:20 time is a great time - relax and enjoy
My dad bought a stagecoach from White City, near Carlsbad, and It was reputed to have been one of the coaches that ran one of the butterfield routes. We never proved it, but we rebuilt the coach and restored it, used it for about 10 years and sold it to Bill Ward in old lincoln for use during the days of the billy the kid pageant.

Nice video! I live in a mining town, Bayard New Mexico. I can see the giant Chino Mine from my front porch. This is copper country, but there are other minerals to be found around here as well. There is also an abundance of artifacts. I have found many potsherds and stone tools in my backyard. I bet if you keep your eye on the ground you'll find all kinds of old bits on the ground in Hillsboro. Thanks for the tour.
Super video! I grew up in New Mexico, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard of this town! It’s super cool to get a view of these towns and history. I really ought to take my own New Mexico Rd. trip!
The "air raid siren" at 19:34 is not an air raid siren. That is actually our working siren for the volunteer fire department and is still in use today - with luck, not very often. Almost everything in Hillsboro works on a volunteer basis.

Hi Sally, I ran across your video on Hillsboro looking for videos on New Mexico. We moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico, a year ago and have fallen in love with the state. We were surprised when we saw our truck parked at the cafe in your video. We started talking and, in passing, remembered commenting to you about the winery being closed. Your video is one of the best I've seen in New Mexico. I love how you told about the history of the town. Keep up the good work. We are new subscribers and look forward to following you.

I just learned you met my brother Jim while you were there. He was the caretaker at the Black Range Museum for a time and is the town’s rattlesnake wrangler 😮. He has just a few stories to share!

Hillsboro used to have an apple festival yearly that was a really big event for our area. But it was always scheduled during the same weekend as the Hatch chile festival.

Following my sophomore year at NM State (in Las Cruces), I got a summer job on a NM Highway Dept. survey crew, working out of Silver City. The Black Range and Gila Wilderness are wonderful places to visit and more. Hillsboro had a good little café and a visit to the museum made for a great Saturday trip. Thanks for bringing back pleasant memories.

What a fascinating little town! The very non-British knight, the stagecoach operator, the Fountain trial, "Madame" Godiva, mines, fires floods. and a village now run by volunteers. Quite the find! And I know what a grasshopper is but I've never had one. I did once open a can of Mountain Dew in 1980, put the can up to drink and got a whole grasshopper in my mouth. That's what I call Creme de Insect. I wrote to the plant in Illinois where it was filled to "thank" them for the surprise . I got a whole flat of the Dew from them. It was two or three years before I drank straight from a can though.
I love your fun and informative videos. Thanks for your hard work. As a volunteer fireman years ago, the sound of those sirens was our call to action!

Another great video, SightseeingSally. I like all the stories you tell about the interesting local history of these old places. New Mexico has a lot of them. I lived in Las Vegas, NM, for half a year. They have some amazing architecture and history if you're ever up there. Thanks again! And I grew up in Wisconsin and thought the color matched the Grasshopper drink too. Wasn't that mint ice cream blended with creme de menthe or something like that. Tasty, though.
My father Jim Lee grew up in Hillsboro.he went to the elementary/middle school there and then went on to highschool at Hotsprings high....he is extremely knowledgeable about Hillsboro,silvercity and most of southwest new mexico....my great grandmother Susan E. Lee wrote the book "these also served" and its about the history and settlement of southwest new mexico.I myself happen to be a 7th generation grant county new Mexican.
A very enjoyable walking tour of a town I want to explore someday myself.

Another great explore, by a wonderful story teller i may add; from the state i grew up in, the Land of Enchantment! Nicely done. I bet that single drum hoist had some stories. We just went to Hillsboro, NM, in January and ate at the Cafe. That was the BEST homemade red and green chile I've had since being here from Oregon. I'm originally from T or C, NM, but had never made the trek. I'm glad I did. Saw a nice buck walk up to us at the cafe. It's worth the drive. Make sure you know the days the Cafe is open. They did close at 3 the day we were there. Thank you for the history lesson!!

Hillsboro did you look into it to find ties to Wisconsin s town by the same name? I love your visits and inquiries into southwest USA. Glad you can get around and collect history stories 4 us. Yes, I'm a fan of cream deminth pie and the after dinner drink. Yum.

I had my first taste of a Grasshopper when I was 11 yrs old when my Mother let me sample her drink at Alexanders on the southside of Milwaukee. LOL

Amazing! Always love to see your videos! I have an idea for one- if you are ever in Illinois again, check out Dallas City on the Mississippi River. It’s got a ton of history, but due to floods a lot of the population is gone. Gulfport, IL is a more extreme version of it, and Nauvoo, IL is still vibrant!

My great Aunt and Uncle Bob Martin, built the house on the corner (with the stained glass windows) He actually had the first stage line across the New Mexico line… I grew up staying there every summer. I barely remember him lying on his chase lounge smoking his pipe…unfortunately, family decided to sell the place(without concern for the kids😢). So now I weep and remember the very best time of my youth, and life…thank you for the memories…
Hillsboro has a nice restaurant - bar that has great food . And some really cool little stores to browse in!

New Mexico is the Old West. In a large way. Lincoln County's history is long and interesting.
My Grand mother used to order Grass Hoppers when we took her to a Fancy place for Dinner . Yes She let me taste it . Thank you for the Video .
Great Video. I’m in Northern NM. We have a few old mining towns here too. Golden, Madrid, Cerrillos, Waldo, San Pedro to name a few. Oliver Lee is now a state park.

We use to have the apple festival there every year in fall on Labor Day weekend. Also there were 2 restaurants I use to love to get lunch at while passing through. It also had a great barbecue wooden building right off the road. It had several cool shops with antiques and handmade items. I miss all that ! Those were good old days not that long ago
There is an old saying that may help understand a knighthood. Once a King, always a King but Once a Knight is enough. Looks like Tom Ying took being a mining town seriously and simply published notice that the eatery was mine. Nice little town too, who wouldn't want to be from London rather than Iowa?

Nice Video . Lefty Wilkins a World famous Cowboy was also from there. His Son was at one time the youngest contestant to compete in the NFR rodeo.
His Daughter is a world class Race Horse trainer . Lots of History for a Tiny little Mountain Town ..

You gave yourself a more thorough tour than we did when we were in Hillsdale in April. It so happens that today I was wearing the baseball cap that I bought in the museum. How did TH-cam know I was wearilng that cap?
While there I also picked up a fascinating autobiography about early days in that part of New Mexico, but I can't find the book right now nor recall the author's name. I don't think much of any of it took place in HIllsboro, though. Can't find him mentioned in online history pages of Las Cruces or Radium Springs, either.

Air raid siren? Possibly a tornado siren.
It's still our emergency siren. Kingston has one as well. If someone from town calls 911, the siren goes off and the volunteer fire department jumps into action. If needed, they send an ambulance from TorC.
@@Megs2Dope OK, there's one at a small town nearby for local volunteer fire department. My wife's grandfather homesteaded near Dora, New Mexico. She has family in several towns there.

Hillsboro Court used to have the town's only gas station, owned by Mr. Roybal. His daughter was named Pam.
When its open, Hillsboro has a great cafe. Theres a great antique store, and we live in the chili capital of the world,( Hatch) that is only an hour southeast of the boro. Hillsboro nearly washed away in a biblical flood at one time in the recent past.

Hatch used to have one they used for 10 o clock curfew up until the 1980s. You might find it in one of the two large antiques stores in hatch.

Looking for historical history on Organ, New Mexico. Old mining community that you may say is a ghost town. Very little online and is tedious researching with little result.

My grandparents started a ranch out side of Springer NM and I was born in Raton
I wouldve drove to hillsboro to meet you., If I had known. We did a couple sunstantial remodels and additions in Kingston.
That red house next to the post office used to belong to the Lindseys...er uh Mr. and Mrs. Lindsey according to Louie Foster. The postmaster was Leroy Sullivan.
We also built a cabin for Ted Turner , and another for Mr. Maytag in the back of Montucello box canyon not too far from Hillsboro.

Have you ever noticed any homeless people in any of these towns? Nothing there for them. Bigger, more populated towns/cities are more likely to have social services. What else attracts homeless people?
