    I just bought one of the Yamamoto hybrids at Lowe's Home Improvement store 2 months ago. I'm crazy in love with it! Even now that the blooms are dropping I like the fat/skinny bulbous canes-- they remind me of a plant in a Dr. Seuss book! 😍

    I must have a crazy Nobile hybrid. It’s been flowering for months. It even flowered through winter and developed buds. It’s still in bloom right now! Beautiful though so I can’t complain!💗😊

    A quick tip, put them in your refrigerator for a month in the winter and they will happily bloom after that. They don't seem to mind not having any light but clearly it can't be a great thing for them.

    • @DouglasEKnappMSAOM
      @DouglasEKnappMSAOM 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Sparky No, but they are dry and in winter rest. I guess you could do that if you had lots of them and needed to save room.

    • @stevennguyen4993
      @stevennguyen4993 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not necessarily. ~55°F seems sufficient enough to get them to bloom. The more important part is making sure that they experience a dry period that gets them to shed some leaves. Fun orchids when you're the type who forgets to water once in a while.

    I didn’t know until now that it only blooms once a year but indeed the bloom is so beautiful. I have white and lots of growth that need to be replanted, so the cons will be space, during summer space is not a problem, I could bring them to my front and back porch but in the winter my garage would be too tiny for them to stay but I could accommodate and fight with my big boys cars a place. Thanks a lot for the many info of the said orchids that I never known before❣️👍

    Hey Dani! Great video and amazing information as usual. Btw, they actually do have Nobile miniatures! I have two. Much much smaller than the regular plant. My nursery owner said it's a newer variety on the market. They're so cute! I love it and glad I found it but now I need to figure out what the heck to do with my big boy Nobile. It's a giant for sure.

      Do you have an ID? I have a suspicion it's just a keiki, another viewer bought one, but checking the ID online it appears it's a regular size Yamamoto hybrid.

    I have a "growth" fertilezer for orchids and a "bloom" one. Can I start fertilize my Nobile now or is it too late as it's the middle of winter. It is cool enough in the room where the Nobile is.

    Hello my nobile until now dont show any sign of bloom. I live in tropical island and winter temperture is 23c more o less I try a winter rest but iam afraid that this was not enought for bloom. What you think a can do continue with the rest and see if a couple a weeks develope a keki o flower. Thanks

  • @Tanneroftanzia
    @Tanneroftanzia 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Danny! I recently purchased a Den. unicum, and the nursery said I could put it in the fridge overnight in the winter to ensure it gets enough of a cooldown. Is this a practice you can recommend?

  • @Estelle16S
    @Estelle16S 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey!
    My mom didn't water my den. Nobile for.. Couple of months. And then I took it under my care. It now has many keikis (I guess) on the canes and overall looks scary :D should I do something different with it or just water it and keep it happy?

  • @ThePurpleHaze881
    @ThePurpleHaze881 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've had a Nobile for about 5 years now, and about a year ago it started producing keikis like crazy. I have removed 4 or 5, repotted them, and it continues producing them. Even the repotted ones have new growths with tiny roots on them. The orchid isn't stressed, so I'm guessing it's maybe a mutation of some sort.

    • @familhagaudir8561
      @familhagaudir8561 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Two common reasons for excessive keiki production if your "nobile type" is a complex hybrid :
      1-The roots in the pot are dying and the plant is trying to save itself with keikis.
      2- There is too much fertilizer. It promotes keikis instead of flowers.

  • @jesusjoseph1899
    @jesusjoseph1899 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are some small orchids in "D.nobile family". Such as D.moniforme strains made in Japan! They have been line bred to be tiny,some only about 10cm tall!

  • @emilydewsnap
    @emilydewsnap 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love Dendrobiums! Especially the miniature nobile hybrids. I got one from an online nursery and it's lovely! It also doesn't require a winter rest (so claims the nursery). So if space is a problem, I would say go for the miniature dendrobium nobile hybrids (edit: see Danny's comments below)

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ... I have a suspicion they sell keikis as miniatures, another viewer apparently bought a miniature but checking pictures on the internet it really is not. Do you have an ID for yours?

    • @emilydewsnap
      @emilydewsnap 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      MissOrchidGirl I do! It's called Dendrobium Sakura 'Hime' (Den Otome x Den Snowflake). Hmm that's a good point, Danny! The nursery advertises it as a miniature hybrid but now I wonder. Currently, its largest cane is about 10 inches (or 25 centimeters).

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oooh at 25 it's not a mini :) I will make a video about them today! And ps here is a fully grown one goo.gl/images/QY7dMn

      @emilydewsnap 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      MissOrchidGirl good to know! Sad to say, I've never seen a full size Den. nobile in person, so I don't have much comparison to go by 😆 They're not super common in shops here in the Northeast US for some reason (even though they would do well in the cooler climate here).That nursery fooled me. I had googled before I bought and found the same pic you found but to me it still looked smaller than pictures I'd seen of big nobiles. But I'm quite ok with it getting bigger over time 😎 look forward to watching your vdieo

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it's a mini www.orchidweb.com/products/dendrobium-spring-bird-kurashiki~3557.html hmmmm I have a suspicion they sell keikis as minis :(

    • @MariyaPrytula
      @MariyaPrytula 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      MissOrchidGirl possibly. But the plant has already bloomed a second time. New growth is topping off at 6 inches and the nursery owner had an older plant that was bushy yes, but not tall. It's possible to have quite a bit of variation between them as well. Website lists height between 5-20 inches which is quite a range.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nobile keikis can bloom at young ages. In any case, I have a feeling it will grow quite a bit taller than that, on orchidweb it looks about 30 cm tall (12-15 inches), definitely not miniature. Keep us posted!

      Terry Klemesrud for me mine went out side during the winter and got a lil rain every few weeks , they were in direct sun for a few hours ( temp never went above 60F in the day ) and now that it’s spring they’re inside where it’s warmer and producing new growth. They’re seedlings still so no blooms but I hope my care info helps

    Unfortunately I completely agree with all the cons for Dendrobiums, but for me personally the major con which made me only try to grow one plant and never wanting to try growing them again is - the general appearance of them (don't get me wrong I like the flowers they are pretty and love the fact that they are scented) but when they are not in bloom I honestly find them not appealing at all :/ 😳 😳 like all of it🙊shape, size and leaves ...
    Maybe t's due to the fact that I am a huge fan of small, compact orchids :)

    Good afternoon Danni,
    I also have some noblies , and am growing them semi hydro. how do you give them a winter rest, less water in that set up, because the reservoir should not be allowed to dry out., and you cant let it get to cool because its roots will suffer.
    How do you go about it.
    Thanks Have a great day.

    I was given one as a present at Christmas. It's still blooming, and the white flowers are very attractive. However, I'm a little taken aback, as the plant is so clumsy in some ways, and the plant itself is not attractive. It's VERY top-heavy, with only one stalk and two very small new stalks at the bottom of the plant, and is already a bit too big for the place I have it in my home. It will tip over at the slightest touch, but I don't have room for a larger pot where I could put stablilising rocks etc, in the bottom. So that's going to be a problem.
    I do have a glassed-in back porch where I can give it the cool rest it requires, as well as a fair amount of sun ...but what's the point? I want houseplants, not porch plants. Aaargh. I'm not sure, but I'll take the challenge and see if I can keep it going for another year. It's mostly the space issue, though. I also have four moth orchids, ALL gifts from friends and family. I've never had the heart to tell them I'm not crazy about orchids. They take up one entire window in my home. They are doing well, and bloom for me, but my enthusiasm is not high for these plants.
    Us plant lovers love plants, but sometimes it's not great to receive them as gifts. If the gift-giver doesn't understand the care or space required, they can become a problem. It's like giving a St Bernard puppy to somebody who already owns a miniature poodle. It's a DOG, right? You love dogs, right? Erm, well, yes, but....

    My question how do you give a winter rest when you live a tropics and have no cool time. My climate is very humid and hot and so to prevent dehydration i have to keep watering the plants all year as they will dry out and become wrinkly. The nobiles are outside but inside the house is hot as well.
