Home Theater Wiring? Run thru walls like a PRO with THESE tools!

- When building a home theater system we need a way to run speaker wire from our receiver and AV rack to all of the speakers that are part of the system. We also need a way to run the signal cables. In this video I show some tools and techniques for running speaker wires and home theater wiring through the walls that makes the process much more simple!

The plastic bag tied to the end of the poly line is brilliant. I have always used a wine cork but have had issues with it getting jammed into a corner. Thanks for the knowledge!

Hey I'm that guy that has the wire all over the floor. It is neat and out of the way at least.
For pulling two runs walk the length of the run add 6-8ft if you are going to have a drop add 1-3ft for extra, wrap that back up to create a loop and with electrical tape wrap the loop so it doesn't come undone, add your pull wires and you will pull two runs at the same time with little waste.
I run wire professionally. You covered close to 90% of all the tips and tricks. Nice job.

Great timing. I need to finish up running some CAT6. Picked up a fish tape and pole about 10 minutes ago.
Harbor freight is the best place to get em.
If you drop 1 you aren't out more then a buck.
That's where I went. Got the 33' pole and 50' tape. $20 I think.
@@pkt1213 yeah they got 2 sizes now,1 is a longer tube , but they thread together with the other.
great for car audio stuff as well.
One question I haven't really seen answered, what to do when you have an irregular shaped room and one or more side surrounds are on stands, is there a good way to hide those wires?
What about HDMI cable? What if my TV is away from the receiver, can i run HDMI cable through the wall?
Just cut one long string that can be pulled back and forth in the tube to move each wire through. The string never leaves the tube. And when your finished...leave the string in the tube for future changes.

The biggest thing for me is to make sure not to rush the job and it really pays to have the right tools. I was running wire through the wall bordering my bathroom and it had some extra studs that were very close together. I didn't want to go spend $50 for one of those flexible bits and i already had a 24" solid spade bit... Thought the angle was fine and drilled through the stud and carved a big hole in the other side of the drywall. Had to realign and drill again to get it right...
If I hadn't been tired, frustrated and just wanting to get it done, i would have gotten the flexible bit to line it up perfectly, got the job done and not have to repair my dumbass mistakes.
Yeah if your going through a ceiling or long lengths 1/2 pvc pipe 10 ft at a time or with couplings even further and more strength then a rod

Would have liked to have seen the flexible drill bit in use. Does the bit wander when starting? How difficult is it to find the hole when fishing through it? Hopefully I can avoid that complication entirely, because the builder of our new home *won't* be installing fire blocking between the wall studs.
Question: After drilling through the fireblock in the wall, how do you find your drill hole afterwards with the fish pole? Just keep poking in the dark?

Would a fishtape make it a lot easier to have a wire go through car door grommets (no molex plugs)?
Not really because of the length of the fish tape and the tight bends in the grommet. Its a beast but I purchase really long zip ties, say 24 inches or greater and use those in an open grommet.
Get a fiberglass fish rod. They are extra flexible. I've done it several times and it works great
This would be a good video to include those mountable speaker plugs

Have you made a video about what amps you need for speakers and what kind of things you need for them i got 4 400 watts speakers and 2 tweeters but i dont know what to buy to make them sound nice
He has for car audio. If you have 400 W RMS surround speakers for your home theater you're going to pay a lot for a matching amplifier. But that's not a common number for car audio speakers either. Are you perhaps looking at peak numbers or talking about subwoofers?

Check the Fiber Fish Wire Python magnetic fish tool
You don't have to use smurf tube or even secure wires above a drop ceiling like that. You don't even need push rods or fish tape to run some cables. You can even get away with drilling a small hole in the wall and jamming speaker wire through. Taking this approach is definitely faster, but having the good tools to do the job properly and going the extra mile to put banana plug cover plates on the wall and running smurf tube makes things so much more enjoyable. People who have home theaters often times upgrade components a few years down the road. And sometimes those new components require higher spec, or completely different cables. Installing smurf tube and investing in quality, specialized tools makes this process a million times easier when you have to make a change. Do your future self a favor, do it right the first time and minimize some frustration. I'd also suggest buying a label maker and heat shrink labels to easily identify cables.
plaster and lath has dulled every tool I have, so the wires are in a loom on the floor... fugly aF.
Plaster is bear for sure! If I had drywall I'd cut open and drill all the studs, but repairing plaster is a hassle. Amazing for sound isolation tho.
Please don't use a staple gun!!! If and when you miss, you just ruined the wire. What I use are white 3/4 electrical staples. Hammer that to the stud, joist, whatever first and then using a zip tie, gently tighten. The benefit to this is if you need to run more wires, cut the zip tie and now the staple is reusable.
Don't miss? I shot probably 500 of those things and never had an issue. It's pretty easy to line up.
@@CarAudioFabrication That's good but whenever I see those "staples" on the job I cringe. I've been doing home A/V since 2004. Now, if you stapled them first, then zipped the wire to them, then that's a better use case for those types of staples.
Yeah never staple anything like cat 😻 wires or speaker wires you can kill the wires with to much pressure

You need some spray foam insulation, bc is air tight and it helps with the sound as well.
It's for temperature insulation not sound absorption

Your special string is called clothes line in most countries where people air dry clothes and it's available for cheap in every dollar store and supermarket. I guess they have a different packaging and price for the US market where people mostly use dryers. :D
We have clothes line here too, and it is nothing like the line in the video.
