This may be your best coverage yet. Great video of the firefighters at work like a smooth running army, the curious spectators, the nearby traffic on the freeway, the NY skyline, the news reporters, concerned citizens, the spaghetti pile of hose lines, the devastation of the businesses...you caught it all and gave me the feeling that I was actually there...(except for the smoke--I don't need that.) Thank you!

I was interested in getting a better look at the two very old red brick apartment buildings next to the fire buildings so I did a Google search. Most of the surrounding buildings in the immediate area are of very old construction too. The area seems to hold a lot of history with some interesting old architecture. Those old wood constructed buildings housing the businesses, each one connected to the other, didn't have a chance of surviving the fire. You and Skyler did a great job of filming, as usual. Great job as always by the FDNY.

Great coverage of this demon fire John. I hope nobody was injured. I liked that the community were handing out bottled water to the firefighters. These guys were exhausted. 🇬🇧

Spectacular coverage, JJ of a vicious fire in a unique Brooklyn neighborhood, Williamsburg. Not too far from where I attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn in 1956-1960. I am so happy you mentioned our Hasidic community brothers who have been a part of this community for so many years. FDNY in an all out attack on this fire. Thanks so much!

Miss the days when you could smell it before you even got there. Everyone amped it up a notch and we did our thing. Sounds bad to a non firefighter, but we had a lot of good fires where everyone got to go in and “play” Of course it was working, but to us it really did not feel like work.

    • @skipd9164

For some reason I was thinking about that. Never a firefighter but worked for a large gas utility in MASS. As a kid 70s the local FD was treated like the unwanted kid. Financially cut to the bone but major fires weekly and the great Lynn fire 1982 wiped out blocks of old factories up to 8flrs of oil soaked wooden floors.

Hi JJ. Cockloft fires are tough to put out. They have to pull ceilings, but when you have abandoned the stores, you pretty much have to wait till it burns thru the roof. Then it collapses down and burns. It's easier to put out. All 9 stores shared the same roof. No basements, just a utility room for all 9 stores under 1 store. Like they say, don't trust the truss roof. Thanks for video.

Thanks for another great video, JJ! Your coverage of these fires is beyond spectacular! I don't understand how you're allowed to get so close. I live in the Phoenix area, and I wouldn't be able to get within a mile of an incident like this. Just please watch yourself around the smoke. It is very hazardous, and you don't need to be putting yourself in that kind of danger just for a video. Be safe brother!

Excellent, excellent video, John! You caught all of it and then some. Great angles and great work showing the whole operation and its fringe edges. That one didn't want to stop. It ran the whole length and didn't stop til it reached the other end. That says a lot for fire walls between individual businesses but from the looks of things, I don't know if THOSE would even have stopped this one. Lot of tired firefighters and, I'm sure, the videographer, too.
Fantastic job, John. Stay safe out there, my friend.

This is one of the many groups within the Chasidic movement. Satmar is the name of the Hungarian area in which the movement started.

I can’t tell you how many times my crime team and I responded from the 79 or 81 up to the 90/94 for jobs on the J or L line and we drove rt past these buildings to get there. That police booth has been like that since I first saw it in 91.

This fire was a lot of work and it's a shame they couldn't have saved some of those stores. It sure wasn't from the lack of effort on the part of the FDNY. Those guys gave it their all. It's just a crying shame they didn't get much in return for their hard work.
I always took pride in saving anything we could save. I pulled up on a fire once, and saw off duty firefighters from another department moving out a few pieces of furniture and a grandfather clock.

Great catch. Once again I will comment with a little FDNY history. You made a comment about the amount of hose on the street . Back before the days of satellite hose and the super pumper, three to four parallel stretches of 2 1/2 hose would be used instead of satellite hose today. So at a incident like this you may hav seen 3 to 4 times the amount of hose. So much hose that engine carried hose tags. A tag would be attached at the nozzle or appliance where water was being applied to the fire and a matching tag was attached at the supply engine discharge. The tags would have the engine co. Number on them and a number so the chauffeur would know what discharge the line was fed by. In the mass of hose the nozzle team would know exactly who to contact about their water supply.

@@THEMAJESTIRIUM1 I grew up to be a FF(not FDNY). I lived in Bergenfield NJ. and did my buffing there and in NYC. Since I was a kid I had to take public transportation to get to jobs in the city. So when I was not visiting FDNY houses where i could ride with them sometimes ( don’t know if that was legal by department regulations then). But I knew the chiefs that would look the other way I guess. I had desk top radios some for FDNY and some for Bergen county departments. Unfortunately the technology was not there for hand held portable scanners of today. If wasn’t already in the city I had to take transportation to the scene so I went to only the biggest incidents so I could have time to get there. But I Bergen county I was able to get to some more routine jobs like you do. The FDNY has always treated their true buff’s well as they do you now. I was recognized by Chief of Department John O Hagen once. I visited many houses and the training center when it was o Roosevelt island. The FDNY also had a TV program called “on the job “ that was produced at the training center and broadcast two times a week on channel 31(WNYC). This was real FDNY training. It was required watching in FDNY houses. Many other departments within the broadcast range of the Empire State Building used it also in their training programs. This was also a great way for Buffs to really understand what was going on at incident sites. I do truly understand what you do and why you do it. I do truly enjoy you using modern technology along with Skyler to bring the art of buffing to the masses. Keep up the good work and stay safe my friend.

Hi, thanks for another video of the fireman's nightmare: a taxpayer fire! I reckon only some industrial fires are worse than that!
Anyway, this fire again matches the quality of previous taxpayer fires we could watch on this channel: a large number of businesses burning simultaneously, with a high fireload, no firewalls, and a fire escalating in minutes!
This scenario is accompanied by a very clear radio communication, with this distinctive NY accent🙂!

Was there a thunderstorm in the area when this happened?? ⚡⚡ 🤔 I pray they all had good insurance, this is really sad to see. That being said think it goes a little too far sometimes when the ads take up more time than the entire video. I’ll hit skip ad when they are obnoxiously long ( one as long as 15 minutes). That’s kind of ridiculous to expect any one to delay any one’s content that long.

    • @suesmith5746
      @suesmith5746 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

All the older building are "grandfathered" in. When they rebuild they will have to meet current codes.Where I live only update needed on a 120 yr old building was ground fault outlets in bath and kitchen and laundry. The 80 yr old tube and spool wiring was ok. No one could afford to update an old building it would cost less to tear it down and build a new one. What are the customers going to do during that 2-3 yr period, extra time for all the permits and paper work. Also someone who does business in a small store like those can't afford to be closed for that long. They also probably only have insurance for the original cost not rebuild in todays market, costs would be at 3 to 4 times higher maybe a lot more.
