- After two years and some big adventures, we say goodbye to the e-Niro as it’s reached the end of its lease. On our last family outing (at the vet: tired and grumpy so apologies in advance for the lack of energy!) we discuss what we’ve liked and disliked.
This may seem like quite a negative video but the niggles are very minor in the grand scheme of things. We’d have happily kept the e-Niro for much longer. It’s an amazing car and, as we say several times, we’re really going to miss it.

This is great. Watching this channel made me go electric. We get our e-Niro in 3 weeks, for a 3 year lease. My wife & I will no doubt be having these conversations 3 years from now, but right now we are both fully looking forward to the next few years enjoying the transition away from ICE with this car.

I'm gutted! One of the key reasons I bought an eNiro FE was the information I gained from your videos. I absolutely love this car, but now that everybody has bought newer versions of the eNiro with strange things like UVO, I was feeling a bit left behind but still comfortable with the fact that you still had one! And now this!!!! Anyway - thanks for the very informative and entertaining videos and good luck with the next EV!

Our E Niro just makes me smile every time I drive it. Intrigued by the rational behind the Fiat 500 purchase, but the second car is the one I’m waiting to hear about. Be happy, your advice guidance and enthusiasm for the EV journey has enlightened many Recent EV purchasers and boosted Kia’s balance sheet. Looking forward to your review of the EV6 ? 😀
Yeah that Fiat 500e makes me confused as we, its an absolutely terrible choice in my opinion, a complete downgrade in every single way compared to the Niro.

Flaviana"s comment about the rear doors and locking, motivated me to go out and look at the door options, and surprise, surprise there is an option to unlock all doors on shut down. So thank you for that. Can't wait for your comments of the Fiat. !!!

Excellent and very entertaining video. Despite the issues mentioned you have both clearly enjoyed the car and I hope the Fiat 500 and whichever other EV you choose next make you happy.

Too bad your e-Niro is gone. You are right about the Camwipe and LED reverse bulbs to solve the reversing problem, mine is brilliant now that I have upgraded it. Interesting that your rear heating vent is not good, mine works fine. I agree that the cabin noise is higher than I would like in the Niro and the 12V battery management does suck in the 2019 version😎; the issue seems to have been solved in late 2019 and in the 2020 model year e-Niro.
What you say about DAB is really interesting. I used to have that issue (new edition eNiro), but it only lasted about 3-4 weeks. Ever since, DAB has never cut out.
Great video Andrew and Mrs 👍. I thought you might have mentioned the EV6 as a potential replacement for this? What are your (what we want to know is what your missus really thinks about it) thoughts about it?

MY21s DAB works excellent in South-germany/Switzerland, and Cam-Whipe is essential.
Your videos helped me feel good about buying my Niro EV. I bought because I never leased anything, but later realized that I might like a newer / different one sooner than the six to eight years that I normally hold to my cars. I have 25,000 miles on it and it is efficient. So hope Kia / Hyundai keep that in mind when they release their new models and your and Bjorn test them. Test drove the VW ID-4 and was less than impressed. It has fast charging, but the range and interior size is not that much different. The engine compartment is even more crowded than the Niro, which was not designed as a EV only. I also drive a Model 3 and the driver safety is much better. It seems like Tesla has a couple of years lead on VW. Looking forward to your family view of the Fiat 500.

You’re wife’s brutal honesty is fantastic. But could you please let her know that I also have been having the same problem with the door locks it’s not just her. Also I’m glad you mentioned about the useless DAB 📻 radio, so often we just sit in silence it’s less annoying.
It may depend which model you have. But ours is the 2023 e-Niro, and I have set the doors to lock automatically while driving. That results in all doors then unlocking as we come to a halt. A nice safety and convenience feature.
mine's set to unlock all the doors (and the charge port) on switch to park, but not if you just switch off, but it can be set to unock on off or not at all.
The air con blower in the back only really blows properly when you close the front outlets.. so its basically not balanced
Thank you for doing this as my leased Kia E Niro 4+ is due in the next week or two, having been held up due to the EV Grant not yet paid by the government. The return was far simpler than I envisaged as I was expecting a full on car check! I believe the choice of new EV's is far increased now and it will be interesting to see your views of the differnces between them over the last few years. As well as Mrs EV's thoughts!! I am looking forward to the fuel savings and hope to travel a lot further in my new car.
The rear blower works if you put it on face only and then manually turn the front blowers down/off. It's a shame there's no setting in the aircon to have the rear blowers on without fiddling though.

I agree wholeheartedly regarding the poor DAB performance but one other niggle is the lack of optional persistence for the ‘auto hold’ feature - just about the only thing I miss from my previous LEAF.
P.S. it’s not that you’re not funny Andrew but occasionally including the WAF (wife approval factor) certainly adds another dimension to the channel. 😀
I've got exactly same DAB problem on new Kia e-soul. Need to take it back. Never had this problem on other much older cars.

Spot on about lane keep assist, you should be able to alter the default setting, I hate it in my kia niro.
Hi, My new Tucson has the same. You can configure that in settings. Open doors when car is stoped or when car is put on park (P). But even you don't stop engine or put in park is first open door is driver door al doors seems to unlock, but is first door open is one of other 3 doors for example passenger door rear door remain locked even if driver door is opened. I think is a move that past over korean thinkingds. You can close door then lock and unlock from key and all doors are unlocked.
Why the 500e? Seemed like space was held in high regard when talking about the Niro.
Because they have replaced the e-Niro with Ionic 5. 500e is their second small car.
We were hoping to do things in the Tesla over this last year so I know how you feel. Still, you did do the trip to Italy (proving you can take a family in an EV on a cross Europe road trip) and you did the Lands End to John O Groats trip for charity. Proving its possible to do one end of the country to the other non stop in an EV.
Yes, I do think the model 3 tries too hard to "be" something so the styling isnt quite right but I'm not overly concerned with that. At the end of the day its important that any vehicle you have does the job you need it to do and I think the Kia has done that for you. Be interesting to see how the new cars perform.

Never had any problems with the radio. My one gripe was I always have to close the boot about three times to get it properly shut. And no footwell mats that fit. They promised they would let us have some when they turned up. Never turned up.
My issue with the radio (2020 version) is that DAB loses connection and it goes back to FM. Or that is fine but there is a glitch that the radio dab VS FM is not in sync so it usually repeats itself. I have the wiper as you mentioned. I've not had any issues in the dark though. Maybe I have a brighter ligh on my car. Also agree that lane assist can be annoying. At least one can tweak the default settings a bit but not turn it off by default is probably because of safety reasons. Regards from Sweden.
Just sold my MGZS EV and was planning getting the new 64kWh ZS EV but after a test drive of the Kia eNiro 4+ have decided the Niro is a far better car. Hopefully the 4+ have some of the niggles ironed out - but you and Johnathan Porterfield have convinced me the Kia is a great choice and something I can happily live with. Not driven the EV6 and although it has a fantastic spec, especially rapid charging, it is a very big car and I think the eNiro is more practical for my needs. Thanks for all the advice via your videos.

The same intermittent DAB issue happens with my partner's Ford Fiesta. We should go back to having huge aerials (maybe an electronic one) haha!
The doors locked in back happens on my new Soul it's just something you live with or safety so no one can get in the back without you noticing

It's easy to see a record of journeys made in the e-Niro with distance and efficiency. Are you aware of any way to get a charge session history with date and kWh loaded. It would be very useful when visiting friends or staying at b&b and charging overnight. You could show how much was used and be able to pay for the electricity. Great channel, thanks.
I had a Nissan Leaf on a 3 year lease which was 7 years ago and was also sad to give it back. In Dec 2000 I bought the same model and year for £4,000 with 50.000 miles on the clock. Maybe you can buy a used e-Nero sometime down the tracks?

DAB radio is patchy in Canterbury in both our cars especially between Westgate and the roundabout towards Wincheap. Reversing cameras always get filthy in the UK. Close some of the front vents and it'll send more air to the back.
My ideal household car combo is a 500e for my wife to replace her current 500, and the e-niro 4+ for me.
Hi Andrew we have the 4 spec e Niro and as for the radio never experienced the problems you did . As for the rear view camera we have the cam wipe cleaner and it’ is brilliant. I like you find the car has some Niggles but no car is perfect but over all it’s a really efficient a well appointed car which is a good size for us. We have our car for another 2 years but based on what’s out there at the moment I don’t know what I would buy. I’m hoping the EV6 is out at a sensible price to the Niro. Will be interesting to see how the fiat compares.

🤣 loved it. We have that Lane Assist nonsense on the Ioniq. Would be better if it just worked over 40 or 50mph. Annoying round town too when you have to pass parked cars that make you go over the line.
Interesting - my 70 plate Kona has really spotty DAB signal. I'd put it down to poor signal where I live (even though no issues in previous car). But sounds like they just have really crappy radios or aerials.
the lock thing is a modern vehicle issue - had 68 van and just got a 21 plate transit and press to open the front and the back will be closed unless you press fob again - which in a van is hugely annoying so what the boss said is 100% right

Radio in ours is excellent, shame the quality broadcast is so dire.
Ours supposed to go back in a couple of months but there's nothing else better out to beat it, prices have shot up it's ridiculous.
08:50 I replaced the backup lights with LED. The NIRO EV SX Touring trim in Canada was all LED except for fog lamps and back-up lights. Much brighter! the camera is OK.
The lane assist, the interval wipers, and the technical knowledge of sales are crap. The doors are a nuisance but out of an abundance of safety. The radio problem is because of DAB. Glad to hear that Italian accent again ☺️ Also, not boring Andrew, just she is bored 😂
Surely you've got to consider the new Kia EV6 for your next car.
Such a brave attempt of 'va bene' :D Is it common in the UK to lease a vehicle (In a lot of videos on youtube this seems to be the case)? In Belgium it seems only companies do this. The few private leases don't even offer EV's.

The DAB on the Kona does the same thing too, don't have the station changing to something else tho. Agree the reversing light is rubbish, we changed ours to a bright LED, which is ace at night.
Both the Niro & Kona are fantastic on efficiency, a great family car.
I have a Plug in Hybrid Nero and love it and have been looking to move into an EV Nero. I noticed that the 8,000 mile limit is becoming standard but I have begun to wonder how legal it is. I was a truck driver until retirement and every new truck has to have its Tachograph calibrated and renewed every 5 years with a check after 3. This ment that the speed odometer was spot on which I used to verify against my TomTom. Have you noticed that the Satnavs installed in cars does not have a speed indication and the speedomiters in cars are notoriously inaccurate, sometimes by as much as 10% in over estimating speed, so how can they legally enforce a charge for exceeding 8,000 miles per annum?
I have mine now 2 years as well. But I bought the car and plan to keep it at least another 5 years. Which will be a record for me, as the longest I had a car (on lease) was 4 years. I suspect you will regret not getting another Niro EV. I bet Flaviana will remind you frequently 😜
Dear Till family, It is because of you that August last year I decided to buy a Kia too. And I can tell you, it's the best car I ever bought. The last 15 years I was driving a Toyota Prius. At that time top of the technic, etc. But definitely now it's Kia. For me it's never going back to a petrol car. I am very interested to in the Fiat 500e. My wife she likes small cars, I prefer more the chubby ones, but never mind. Thank you very much for sharing you experience with us. I'am sure Kia will by back in your life, when possible. Never had a problem with the radio on my e-Niro. Also, the radio station stays the same next time I turn on the car. Strange.
Also, the issue with the low visibility with the rear camera at night is mainly due to the low intensity of the reverse light. You can replace the bulb by a much brighter LED one.

The lane beeping thing isn't on by default in my 2022 e-Niro (in the sense that if you turn it off, it remains off), so I guess they took comments on it into account.
