  • What is Knee Bursa?
A bursa is a small, fluid-filled sac within your body that lies near bony prominences and joints. The bursa acts as a cushion between muscles, ligaments, and bones and allows structures to glide and slide past one another with ease and with minimal friction. Injury to a bursa may cause pain, limited motion, and decreased functional mobility.
    What is KNEE BURSITIS?
Knee bursitis is inflammation of a small fluid-filled sac (bursa) situated near your knee joint. Bursae reduce friction and cushion pressure points between your bones and the tendons, muscles and skin near your joints.
Any of the bursa in your knee can become inflamed, but knee bursitis most commonly occurs over the kneecap or on the inner side of your knee below the joint.
Knee bursitis causes pain and can limit your mobility.
What is the function of Bursa?
Your bursae serve to reduce friction between your body’s bony prominences and muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
They help structures glide and slide past one another while movement occurs.
A bursa may also provide a bit of shock absorption; the olecranon bursa in your elbow or your pre-patellar bursa in your knee may help soften a blow to those joints.
    KNEE BURSA -
Knee bursa are small fluid filled sacs which contain synovial fluid.
Bursa are found all over the body and there are approximately fourteen around the knee.
They sit between two surfaces, usually muscle and bone, to reduce friction, a bit like ball bearings. This allows everything to move smoothly preventing inflammation.
The Main Knee Bursa / Bursitis -
    Prepatellar Bursa -
The prepatellar knee bursa is found directly in front of the kneecap, just underneath the skin. It provides protection and cushioning for the kneecap
Repetitive or prolonged, forwards kneeling places a great deal of pressure and friction on the prepatellar knee bursa which can lead to inflammation.
Inflammation here is known as prepatellar bursitis, or Housemaids Knee. It commonly affected people who spend lots of time kneeling and today is more common in trades such as roofers and carpet fitters than housewives
    PREPATELLAR BURSITIS -
Prepatellar bursitis is also called housemaid's knee or carpenter's knee. A bursa is a fluid-filled sac which ensures there is less friction between body parts.
The prepatellar bursa is located superficially between the skin and the patella. The inflammation of a bursa is called bursitis.
    INFRAPATELLAR BURSITIS -
Infrapatellar bursitis (or clergyman's knee) occurs with inflammation of bursae around the insertion of the distal patellar tendon. The inflamed bursa may be:
Superficial/subcutaneous: anterior to the distal patellar tendon.
Deep: posterior to the distal patellar tendon, in the region of the infrapatellar fat pad (Hoffa's fat pad)
    PES ANSERINE BURSITIS -
Pes anserine bursitis occurs when the bursa - or fluid-filled sac - inside your knee joint becomes irritated and produces too much fluid. The bursa then swells, causing knee pain and tenderness. This condition is sometimes called pes anserinus pain syndrome (PAPS).
    Semimembranosus Bursa / BAKER’S CYST -
A Baker's cyst is a fluid-filled cyst that causes a bulge and a feeling of tightness behind your knee. The pain can get worse when you fully flex or extend your knee or when you're active.
A Baker's cyst, also called a popliteal (pop- luh -TEE-ul) cyst, is usually the result of a problem with your knee joint, such as arthritis or a cartilage tear. Both conditions can cause your knee to produce too much fluid, which can lead to a Baker's cyst.
    SUPRA - PATELLAR BURSITIS -
The suprapatellar bursa, also known as the suprapatellar recess or suprapatellar pouch, is one of several bursae of the knee. It is located proximal to the knee joint, between the prefemoral and suprapatellar fat pads. As with all bursae, its purpose is to reduce friction between moving structures.
