Converting A Refugium To An Algae Scrubber Step By Step Build | Frag Tank

- In this video i will be converting my frag tanks refugium to a diy algae scrubber. The first thing i did was remove everything from the 20 gallon tall sump so i am able to take out the refugium in order to build the new scrubber. Once the sand if removed via the shop vac i put the sump back under the frag tank and started plumbing. I first had to make a small adjustment on the return pump as i had to move the sump forward to make room for the algae scrubber. Once that was done i added a 1inch T and a ball valve for the drain. I then continued the 1 inch pipe down until i make it 3/4 inch at the elbow for the scrubber. I connected a coupling so the algae scrubber would be easy to remove when its time to clean it. Once that was done i make the cut for the mesh screen on the scrubber and zip tied it in place. The next thing i did was rough up the mesh screen so the algae has a good place to grow. After replacing the new algae scrubber it was time to start the system. I added a par 38 54watt led bulb made to grow plants from ebay. A week later the algae is starting to grow on the scrubber!

And that's how it's done! Nice work... I recommend running it 16-18 hrs with its maturing ... then you can crank it to 24/7 after a couple of months... found that grew algae the best on my Scrubber. Good luck man ✊🏾
cj peeps say 18 hrs after that no difference. what you think
great job Travis and the algae scrubber looks great.
Thank You
Nice clean upgrade. I've been wanting to revamp my sump as well refugium modification. Keep us posted on the nutrient change
Will do
awwsome info bro. I've been darting around with the idea of adding an algea scrubber on my refug
ium. but too scared to cut into the piping. you made it look easy! lol. can't wait for the update. thnx
I will have an update for you in a few weeks but so far works great.
Awesome, really would love to hear how it works out. Strongly considered going the algae scrubber route before. Chickened out.
great build, I have one also. try making small horizontal cuts along the main slot so that you get a much higher water flow across. once the algae grows in it will clog quickly 👍😁
Simple and easy Hex good job......Great idea....
Thank You
Marine pure blocks will last out of water for quite some time I forget what they advertise but a couple hrs is fine... they’re like a sponge and hold a lot of water even when not in water..
Nice job. Does having that light not enclosed cause a lot of algae to grow on the sump and other than where you want it on the scrubber screen?
great video great build.
Thank You
Any updates ever drop on this? Thinking about making one, my Chaeto keeps dying off. .
What are all those white specs on glass of tank? I all sudden have those everywhere in my aquarium and can’t figure out what are they
Great video! Any updates?
My scrubber isn't producing much, it's been running for the weeks now :( maybe it's because mine is after the filter socks. Glad to see this is working good.
Yea its not doing bad for about two weeks
Mine only has a couple green spots, approximately how much flow is yours?
Honestly i dont know i just look for a constant flow over the entire screen
great video
Thank You
very cool, thx
seems insane that some of the commercially available options end up as expensive as they do considering whats really involved. no question a rain2 is a nice unit but it's hard to swallow that extra $400 for aesthetics.
How often to you calibrate the dosing pump for for alk, calcium and magnesium?
Once a year
Nice vid! 👍 one question tho, what was the thought process in replacing the fuge rather than having the scrubber feed into the fuge chamber? I'm just building my first salt water setup n I plan to have both (eventually)
Can an algae scrubber be submerged? I have the whole center part of the back of my 29 bio-cube that I want to make into an algae scrubber. But it seems like everyone has theirs above water with a waterfall going over it. Thanks
Yes, these are called upflows, and our units are the HOG and the SURF. You can DIY easily with an air stone.
On your 20 gallon high tank what is the mesurements on your baffels
no idea the tank is down
what is the name of ... the plastic net... and where can i found it... ???
raja lal that's basic knitting mesh. any craft store and even Wal-Mart has it. Just check in the arts and crafts section.
i used my table saw to gut the slot in the pipe for my scrubber, but that is a much larger, noisier, more expensive, and dangerous tool then a dremmel.
Nice build Hex
Thank You
Did you have to seed the mesh with algae or does it just start growing naturally? Thanks
nope it does it on its own
FishOfHex ok good deal
what are them bottles called you have the super glue in?
no idea i just buy it like that off brs
So did you have a zeovit reactor prior and still had nutrient issues?
I never had a zeovit reactor on this system
Nutrients have never been an issue i built the scrubber simply for the channel for those looking to make a diy
where did you get the screen scrubber???
Fabric store
how long till you get green algae? IM still getting brown and its been 3 weeks.
a month or so
Congrats on your videos
Has beautiful corals
How's the Algae Scrubber?
the algae scrubber worked great until i took the system down
so is ur system gona be only on ats??
?
FishOfHex i mean jus ats and no skimmer or any other filtration.?
The frag system has the algae scrubber, skimmer, gfo/carbon reactor
what happened to the arrow crab?
living in the 125 tanks refugium
that shit is legit bro!!!
Thanks man
FishOfHex you should sell a kit on your website
if only i had time for that. at this point its website daily, cutting, making boxes. making filter socks, making frag plugs, making breakout boxes. answering questions/emails custom client installs and trying to make videos. adding one more thing would probably kill me at this point. im so far behind its not funny
Hey Travis, I'm building a 200g Reef and I'm not sure whether I should build an algae scrubber or a sump refugium. I have plenty of room in the sump area and space is not an issue.
I personally like the look of a refugium. At the end of the day its up to you.
FishOfHex thank you for the quick response. I'm just getting into coral keeping which lights should I go with? I want the Best bang for my buck.
I grew everything in the 125 gallon with three chinese led boxes and 4 t5 bulbs. Check out the 11 months growth update to see what they can do. that video is in the 125 gallon playlist
FishOfHex that's very impressive. What are the Chinese led boxes called? $?
aquamars or sb reef light
I had some nice results with 16 hours per day.
Thats about what i kept it on after making some adjustments.
The light needs to be contained. Otherwise, you have algae everywhere in addition to the mesh.
Never had a problem
Entertaining but too advanced for me, I know one day I will understand everything u post.
I wouldn’t ever replace a cheto fuge with a scrubber.. they do the same thing and cheto just requires less maintenance and less parts. On my salt systems is 100% cheto.. my freshwater tanks all use scrubbers as it’s currently they only way to control nutrients for large predator tanks. Scrubbing a screen weekly is way easier then 50% weekly water changes taking up 3/4 of a day. (I don’t have a fishroom my tanks are spread all over the house in different rooms other then the living room which has 3 tanks lol.
not a fan of this build
