Hey, just wanted to chime in with an idea that I’ve heard that I didn’t hear reflected here. From my understanding, Freud developed the idea of “penis envy” not because he was developing a sexist theory, consciously or unconsciously, but was actually highlighting the sexism already established in society. He reasoned that women develop this type of envy is because when they are children they’re oppressed and restricted from playing and expressing themselves because they are girls. And when a girl asks why they can’t go out and play in the mud, for instance, they’re told they can’t because they’re not boys. And when they ask why they’re not boys they’re told they don’t have a penis. And so over time, repression occurs because girls are told they can’t do things because they lack an essential sign for society that would let them express themselves (you can see the Nietzchian influence here I hope). If this is true then Freud isn’t trying to just develop a theory around the masculine or patriarchy but showing how engrained these concepts are in the formation of social roles and how it affects the unconscious. I’d be interested to hear your take on this.

Freud doesn't naturalize aggression so much as he describes the ontological (or material, if you will) conditions of human development: we depend so radically on our primary caregiver(s) that we love them with an overwhelming intensity, and therefore also experience their inevitable absences and failures with rage and confusion. These experiences are bound to be reawakened in our adult life when we are in conflict with others, especially if our own history is one where rage was met with punishment rather than understanding or soothing.

I just started reading "Bonds Of Love" by Jessica Benjamin and she refers a lot to Freud - and thereby explains behavior of men. Really interesting read to follow up ... maybe you can give it a read and video some day! :)

21:48 Freud was prefiguring evolutionary psychology. He wasn't the only one to do so. Darwinian evolution was revolutionizing the sciences of the late 19th Century.
David! You're covering Civilization and Its Discontents next perhaps? Are you working up to Eros and Civilization ?

Fascinating! I was on mat leave last year and I was wondering about how experiences that a baby will not consciously remember might impact them.
When you talked about the unconscious, it reminded me of this experience of watching a human being interact with the world for the first time, in ways they won't remember later on.
    Great discussion.

i'm still piecing together the unconscious and conscious ... conscience/superego ... being human, and finding GTB (goodness, truth, beauty) in spite of the darkness ... the right mix of joy and suffering, of selfness and givingness ... of the miracle of life

Are people really starting to abbreviate "goodness, truth, beauty"? Or is that a personal idiosyncrasy?

You've misread what Freud meant by "sex" in the text; it's a neologism.
