Tokyo (3 days) - Kanazawa (3 days) - Shirakawago (1.5 days - book in advance or day trip from Kanazawa or Takayama) - Takayama (2 days) - Kyoto (include Nara daytrip) (4 days) - Osaka (3 days)- Tokyo (3 days)
-Expect half day travel time on JR routes between main destinations
Takayama Green hotel - large room (30 min walk from old town Takayama market)
Attractions:
(1) Hida Old Folk Village (took taxi from hotel)
- display village site featuring the traditional Japanese cottages known as gassho-zukuri (thick thatched roof, build at 60 deg angle to enable rain and snow to fall off the steep roof)
- Similar to Shirakawago, smaller scale
(2) Takayama old town
Spent an enjoyable afternoon here. Several long streets of traditional Japanese stores and eateries.
(3) Shirakawago - day trip
1 hour drive from Takayama (self drive or private tour)
- Shirakawa-gō, a small, traditional village showcasing a building style known as gasshō-zukuri.
- UNESCO World Heritage site
- Need at least 4 hrs (exclude travel time). Definitely worth visiting.
