An excellent retrospective. Thank you. 'Tis grand to have films like this given recognition. With audiences crying out for something 'new' to entertain them, and there being little of merit made today, forgotten quality films and shows need more exposure. There is an opportunity for the good and the great to have a second bite of the cherry. Nice one. Cheers.
Yes, siree, agreed in full. And it really is great that we have companies like Kino out there putting out nice releases of notable yet somewhat obscure films. Stuff that easily could have fallen by the wayside.
Thanks, Tom.
The movie's one-sheet poster is gorgeous! 🙂
That it is. It's interesting too, because looking at it, one might think "gothic horror." And yet, when you see the film, it really does fit well.
@@AtomicSnackBar It does have that gothic look.
@ AtomicSnackBar - Right on both observations gentlemen. A very effective piece of art and it really does capture the romanticism and mystery of Night Tide. A wonderfully quirky little gem of a picture. Good call on this one Sterling. Atomic SnackBar mission accomplished. Chaaaaaaandu!
Thanks for the superb "Noirvember" NIGHT TIDE retrospective. It's a film that has rightfully become a genuine cult favorite of fans. Curtis Harrington was on top of his game with this $28K wonder! I would also mention that David Raksin wrote what has become one of the most memorable movie themes of all time for LAURA, one of the greatest noirs in film history. I would speculate that those tentacular special effects might have been courtesy of Ed Wood. That nightmarish octoped seems straight out of the pit of props for BRIDE OF THE MONSTER, but I guess we'll never know.
Interesting you say that. I had actually considered doing more for Noirvember this year, but time got away from me. Film Noir is definitely something I'd like to cover more. And nice pull there with the Raksin tidbit. That totally slipped by me. Also kudos for the Ed Wood reference.
_Laura_ is an excellent movie, I bought a digital copy of it. A beautiful theme as you note, as well.
@jerryrichardson2799 - that theme song is one of great earworms of film history.
I do look forward to your videos.
Thank you kindly, Enzo. And nice to hear from you again.
@@AtomicSnackBar You're very welcome.😁
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Nice Ice pirates tie in also.
It's not always easy to work Ice Pirates into these retrospectives, but if the opportunity arises, it's our duty here at the Snack Bar to take it.
What a great way to start the weekend. 👍
I certainly try. Thanks, Euan.
This movie is SOOOO underrated! It has so many things going for it that you have already covered. But it's the location shooting that really does it for me. A real slice of a bygone time.
I'm glad to hear you've heard of it. And you're right. I am just a sucker for carnivals, fairs, boardwalks, etc.
Excellent as always.
Thanks, Gregg. Have you managed to catch this one on Dr. Gangrene's yet? Makes the experience even better.
@@AtomicSnackBar I think it was on that weekend after you told me about Dr. Gangrene & NECAT. I tried to stay up & watch it, but I "gave up the ghost" about 20 minutes into it.
@gregg2560 - I often suffer from gastric narcolepsy myself. But it's even worse with books.
@@tonysantiago255 It definitely wasn't that Tony. I had to work that particular Saturday & I was exhausted. Even though I had some coffee, I just couldn't keep my eyes open.
When I saw the clip of Dennis Hopper wrapped up in the squid I immediately imagined Johnny Depp standing over him saying "Move his legs around so it looks like he's killing you. "
If I was still doing The Sophisticated Weirdo series, that would have made a good little mash-up. Though in the film itself, it's a pretty creepy scene.
Awesome night tide is available on the Roku channel. Playing now.
Okay, good deal. Thanks for the info.
Great atmosphere. Really dig how you went black n white too. Great video, can’t wait till next week!
Thanks, Eric. I dig it too. I think it adds to the atmosphere.
@ericmercier466 - I was just thinking about that yesterday. What we consider artistic choices of B&W photography was often just a budgetary consideration. Yet, they wouldn't be nearly as effective in color. This is a perfect example.
As for Mr. Hopper's nightmare, most of my nightmares are low-budget and unsettling too. Thanks for another fun episode!
I know. I've read your dream journal. Truly disturbing stuff. And that's just your daydream journal.
Thank you for another great video. I will have view this film.
You are much too kind, good Mr. Davis. You are appreciated.
And it's a good one. Free with ads right here on YT, but there is also a nice Kino release.
You always offer an entertaining, well-documented review. It’s not Friday without one. Thanks.
I certainly appreciate that. And I certainly try. It can be tough, but I don't think I've missed a Friday in at least two years.
@@AtomicSnackBar You can't miss a Friday, it's on the calendar every week after Thursday.
@@w.adammandelbaum1805 Maybe if you use those government controller calendars. Can't trust 'em.
This looks (visually and content wise) great. Good video with lots of info! Hope your day is safe from unwanted tentacle monsters
Well, you know, tentacles monsters are just par for the course in my line of work. Can't be helped. Regardless, thanks, pal.
Lawson, who died in 2022 also may be found in Peter Gunn (on TH-cam) and Ben Casey episodes. Her debut album may be found on TH-cam. She could sing as well as swim. Her last gig was a 2005 episode in ER where it was evident she had not been on the seafood diet.
A fun project would be to take some of Hopper's lines in Blue Velvet and dub them into Night Tide. Imagine him coming down the stairs of the jazz club in Night Tide and saying "Let's .... I'll... anything that moves." Then he sits next to Mora. He looks at his beer and says "Heineken, f... that s... Pabst Blue Ribbon."
The line about warm beer would fit nicely into Night Tide as well. Coincidentally, I actually saw Blue Velvet for the first time not long ago. It's one of those films I knew quotes from but didn't know I knew quotes from. You know how it goes.

Oh Mr . RS. Spiffing Segway's into the association/links as in the film industry and it's workings. The good Sir Tater of Taterstein Abbey, two weekends in a row. Glad to see no digital hurtles can keep you down for long.
@ TheCommonGardenTater1 - Judging from your perpencity to indulge in the occasional liquid libation, I caution you to resist the urge to roll it and smoke it. Rumor is that Ogilvy lit up the red herb once too often and he ended up a 'basket case' during the Invasion. Scooped up by one of those Martian metallic spider-like machines. Uuuuuuuullllaaaaaa indeed. Don't inhale the Black smoke. It only leads to visions of Taylor Swift. Just say "No"!
Dennis Hopper AND Peter Lorre in the same movie? The mind boggles! Just think of the six degrees connections, from Fritz Lang to David Lynch.
That would have been something. One could have linked Bogey to Phil Fondacaro.
@AtomicSnackBar Or Cary Grant to Keanu Reeves.
That Kino bluray is the way to go. For such a small budget, the cinematography and mood of this movie is in a class by itself. Enchantingly weird yet endearing. Time for a rewatch for the neverending Watchlist.
That it is. I'm glad a company like Kino put this one out. It's just too good to not have a nice release. And you summed it up quite well. There really is an endearing charm to the film. You just kind of root for everyone.
@ AtomicSnackBar - Take a look at the actor playing the Sea Captain again. I think the costume designer for Gilligan's Island stole that look. Nice job on the trivia, particularly the Edgar Allen Poe connections. That Alka-Selzer animation and the characterizations of foods is awesome. A wonderfully expressive army of personalities. A lost art.
@@tonysantiago255 I was surprised that there was actually a bit of trivia to find. It can be rather tough with these more obscure movies. I've been wanting to cover At the Earth's Core, I even shot the bumpers, but man, the info isn't exactly forthcoming on that one.
@@tonysantiago255 hey TS! Good call on Gilligan

I grew up in Florida, but, while in the army, spent a year in Monterey, California which this movie reminds me a lot of how it looked at the time. I think that low budget movies that use real locations and natural lighting have an impact that big budget Hollywood's expensive sets and intricate lighting can never duplicate.
That's an interesting observation. I think you're onto something there. And what part of Florida did you grow up in? If you don't mind my asking. There's a few Floridians here at the Snack Bar.
@@varanid9 your mention of seeing Monterey while in the service is great. This is why I like reading down through all the credits, when watching older films shot on location the background details are very interesting to me.

man, I haven't seen this, but at your glowing-in-the-dark recommendation, I'ma have to seek this out! The atmosphere and gradual nature of the plot, ESPECIALLY paired with that double-feature with _The Raven_ makes this sound like one hell of a date nite movie for the right spooky guys or gals out there. I think it kinda speaks to the scrutinies of both the wardrobe department AND the Navy to have that odd little snafu with the young Hopper out and about on the boardwalk. All of this is just the primo cuts of oddity you get at the Snack Bar and I am here for it all the time!
Also, I was waiting for the shark from the intro for _Catalina Caper_ to swim into that Starkist commercial. Sorry, Charlie, but sharks got no sense of taste at all!

Can’t help thinking about the movie “The Lighthouse”. Sex with an octopus. “Cabin in the Woods”, death by merman. “Dagon”, sex with the woman from “30 Coins”, and that underwater…door.
It is said that the sirens of Greek myth were the fate/curse of the human women who tempted the angels and gave birth to the nephilim.
Lyrics to the Eagles’ song “Try and love again”, with Randy Meisner.
“…Right or wrong what’s done is done, it’s only moments that you borrow. But the thoughts will linger on, of the lady and her song, when the sun comes up tomorrow…”
I could see this one being a prequel to Dagon. Heck, that's the shared universe we've all been dreaming of. So I hereby decree that to be the case.
This has to be one of your best videos. Brilliantly presented and the way you flow to each fact and reference point is really impressive. Also, the cartoon food attacking the man at bedtime was fantastic!

There are some similarities between NIGHTTIDE and THE BERMUDA DEPTHS (1978) starring Connie Selleca and Leigh McClosky. In 1992 I was on Venice Beach. That was also a location for DAUGHTER OF HORROR and TOUCH OF EVIL. Dennis Hopper had a house there.
Oh, that's interesting. I'm not familiar with that one. Do tell.
@@AtomicSnackBar TBD was some sort of Japanese-American co-production. The American side was Rankin-Bass, famous for Christmas stop-motion animations, and I think MAD MONSTER PARTY. The Japanese company was famous for ULTRAMAN. The movie is sort of a cross between an episode of TWILIGHT ZONE and GAMERA. There's a mysterious woman who is some sort of a ghost or siren, there's a giant turtle sea monster, it's set in the Bermuda Triangle, etc. It would take too long to explain - the movie is on the Internet Archive. Like NIGHTTIDE, there's a young male protagonist haunted by a mysterious woman who seems to live in the sea.
And while we are on NIGHTTIDE, could the woman have been one of HP Lovecraft's Deep Ones? Was she eventually going to move into the sea, mutated into some of fish person?

Here's some interesting trivia concerning Marjorie Cameron, who appeared in the movie. Parsons Kimmel (April 23, 1922 - July 24, 1995), who professionally used the mononym Cameron, was an American artist, poet, actress and occultist. A follower of Thelema, the new religious movement established by the English occultist Aleister Crowley, she was married to rocket pioneer and fellow Thelemite Jack Parsons.
Born in Belle Plaine, Iowa, Cameron volunteered for service in the United States Navy during the Second World War, after which she settled in Pasadena, California. There she met Parsons, who believed her to be the "elemental" woman that he had invoked in the early stages of a series of sex magic rituals called the Babalon Working. They entered into a relationship and were married in 1946. Their relationship was often strained, although Parsons sparked her involvement in Thelema and occultism. After Parsons' death in an explosion at their home in 1952, Cameron came to suspect that her husband had been assassinated and began rituals to communicate with his spirit. Moving to Beaumont, she established a multi-racial occult group called The Children, which dedicated itself to sex magic rituals with the intent of producing mixed-race "moon children" who would be devoted to the god Horus. The group soon dissolved, largely because many of its members became concerned by Cameron's increasingly apocalyptic predictions.
That's quite the story there. Really interesting. I had no idea. Too bad she wasn't a more prominent character in the film or I may have stumbled across that. Would have made for some interesting trivia. I was just looking at some of her art. Quite odd as well.
Thanks for sharing, Captain.
Must confess, you stumped the band with this one Rob 😳 I kinda get “Cat People” vibes from it, which is a good thing 😼 Added to the (ever unwieldy) watch/buy list 🙂
That's not a bad comparison there. But Night Tide is definitely a bit more dream-like and has that indie movie charm. I'd say it's like Cat People merged with Martin.

I have never seen this film but now want to see it. I like any films from the late 50s to early 1960s that show the boardwalk. Also if it has Dennis Hopper at a minimum it will be interesting. Always loved Luana Anders in any role she did especially her roles in The Outer Limits, The Pit & the Pendulum, Easy Rider, & her fantastic role as Noradelle De Leone ( AKA Agnes Hickey) on Dragnet where she totally messes with Jack Webb & Harry Morgan. That episode was hilarious & was Called The Big Dog. It still is on YT as a full episode from 67. She was a wonderful lady & a sad ending to her life. It's a pity you didn't mention the actress who played the mystery woman: Marjorie Cameron. (He was a devotee of Aleister Crowley and got himself entangled with L Ron Hubbard at one time.) Cameron - as she was known - also appeared in one of Kenneth Anger's occult films. She was friends with Hopper and with Harrington, who also worked with Anger.
Yeah, I dropped the squid covered ball on that one. I wasn't even aware of Cameron's fascinating backstory. I generally only research the main cast or genre favorites. Too bad too, that would have made for some great trivia.
There are a lot of cool words in here. Ice pirates. Blue velvet. Too bad I can't read.
At least you can write, though. And that's half the battle.
The negative is lost on this I read somewhere.
That's interesting. At least Kino managed to put out a nice quality print.
Wow that’s Paul freeze for the Starkiss tuna commercial
He must’ve been before Herschel Bernardi
Actually night tied would’ve fit better with the terror
Although there are some similarities between the terror and the raven
It's a rather ambiguous title for a rather ambiguous film. But I could see it on The Terror as well.
