The guy who funded this film Chariots of Fire was Mohammed al-Fayed. He later became famous when his son Dodi al-Fayed was killed along with Princess Diana in the infamous car crash in Paris in 1997.

Miss Young later commented that She wanted the film to win and felt she "willed the winner" and thus the pause between reading and announcing it. She had hoped she did not err in wanting it so much she would not read it correctly. A grand star. And I loved Chariots of Fire. And what a score!
@@rosaaparicio6374 Raiders of the Lost Ark was a good film in its own right, but it was a summer action blockbuster picture. Different genre not really historically respected by the voters of the Academy. Notice that there is hardly any applause when it’s name is announced as a nominee?
How could it not win with the greatest opening and music...EVER! The West Sand Beach at St Andrews, Scotland as they couldn't recapture the historical period of the 1920's at the then current day Kent, England. Carson as host only adds to the class of the event which is so sorely missed today.
Loretta Young, a real Movie Star, gave an interview after the Oscars saying she personally wanted Chariots of Fire to win the Oscar and when she tore open the envelope one notices a pause ....Miss Young felt she "willed" Chariots to win and wanted to be sure. It is a great great movie and I am glad it won in a year of outstanding films
Cool that she wanted it to win. But honestly…I don’t like her. Mediocre actress. Republican. Need I say more? Hollywood Royalty…I think not. Ethel Merman knew she was a sanctimonious bore. When she used to charge people a quarter for cursing on the set of her stupid, boring TV show, Ethel had to pay up more than once. On the third offense, fully over Loretta’s sanctimony, she put a $5 in the coffee can and said “Here’s five bucks Loretta. Go fuck yourself!” 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Now before I go to sleep, there's something I should know about this. The Oscar nominated filmmaker of Chariots of Fire was Sir Hugh Hudson who passed away in 2023 at his London home. He also did Greystoke, Lost Angels and I Dreamed of Africa. Survived by his wife, children and family. Hugh was more than just a filmmaker but an artist who does everything naturally well on all the projects he had ever done in his lifetime. With all the love and gratitude he gave us, Sir Hugh Hudson will be deeply missed.
all films nominated were good, but Chariots of Fire was a true inspiration and quite profound and artisitic for most people, i'm glad it won, it deserved it.
An absolutely wonderful and inspiring film. Captured much of the world at the turn of the century into the 20th Century of war, blood, and guts. This film was inspired by two very extraordinary lives.
Raiders changed action-adventure cinema forever. The impact it's had was that in those days; If your action-adventure film was somewhat close to being as entertaining as Raiders; you had a winner. You didn't have Raiders, but a good movie nonetheless. Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Spielberg pretty much shaped the 80s world of cinema.
Reds and Raiders are phenomenal movies, but I think this movie deserved it on it's main theme: The drive and dedication it takes to master your craft. It's a theme that's universal to everyone.
Timothy Freeman it was one of the themes... But it also talked about how different can two men be even if they have the same nationalitu and fight for the same things
I saw it at the cinema in a city about twenty miles away from where I lived. Left the cinema wanting to run home in slow motion. However, my then girlfriend insisted we took the bus.
One of the biggest and most welcome surprises in Oscar history especially following Loretta Young's pontificating. Johnny Carson was a great Oscar host.
Agreed. I think Reds was the Best Picture, but it's kinda splitting hairs. I LOVED Chariots of Fire. Watched it in a Sports Literature class in high school and have enjoyed it ever since
Reds went into the evening as heavy favorite, but when Chariots won costume design and screenplay and when Raiders picked up the key film.editing award - there was real suspense when it came to the final award. It was 9 years since the last split between director and picture so it was due. Before Ms. Young announced the winner = Raiders had won 4 with On Golden Pond, Chariots and Reds 3 each. Only Atlantic City was out of the race.
Chariots of Fire won four Academy Awards. We have here the movie winning Best Picture and also Best Costume Design, in another video. Please, could you upload the other two awards (Original Screenplay and Music Score)? Thank you.
Reds was good but sappy, Raiders is phenomenal but at that time, action-adventure-fantasy was just getting better recognition. I thought of all of them Chariots was the best because it got the true human emotions in a time when the world had lost a lot of it innocence after WWI. Just my opinion of course.
Although Raiders of the Lost Ark was my favorite choice, I remember watching the Oscars at 18 years and had no clue who the presenter for Best Picture was, all I could remember until now was a woman with dark hair announcing Chariots of Fire as the Best Picture. Thank you for providing this clip and now, 41 years later I can say the winner was a fine choice. I actually saw twice during its first release sometime in 1982.
At the time this seemed like a huge shock. However, Beatty subsequently said he was not suprised that the best picture award went to another film. REDS was hot favourite for best actress, costume design and original screenplay - when those awards went elsewhere, he said he was pretty sure it was not going to win for best picture.
A truly wonderful movie. I remember when they were speaking about the odds of the top 5 nominees. Nobody gave Chariots of Fire a chance to win, but it did.
Anyone else here from The Crown S05E03?
Yep. Just watched it.

Here because of the crown. What a beautiful thing to know that the most British movie of all was funded by Mohamed Al-Fayed. Pure poetical beauty.

What does all this have to do with The Crown?
Big credits go to Vangelis for his great film score for this film in my opinion. I really enjoyed this film. :).

What a golden moment. Chariots of Fire was a profoundly inspirational and moving film. Well deserved win.

No
No did see it while go on the Crown.
One of the most beautifully done & inspiring pictures ever made. a classic for all time.

Loretta Young looked incredibly great for her age (69).
Brilliant movie..I love it now and always..
It was amazing how this film generated interest in running and marathons for both men and women.

I am sorry for not knowing about this earlier, I came here because of Netflix's the crown season 5, episode 3.
Good lord, Loretta Young is a stunner!! So is "Chariots."
The votes got it right. Chariots of Fire is a game changer and one of the greatest British films of all time.
so it deserved a BAFTA not an oscar
***** chariots of fire is the only script that made Sean Connery cry
I agree David
What game did it change and how did it change it?
It reasserted that decency can win an Oscar.
Loretta Young was obviously thrilled with a fine, old fashioned and moving motion picture about courage and ideals winning the award.
Who's here after The Crown?
Me :-)
Chariots of Fire will remain, always, one of the very best films ever.
Anyone else coming back here after watching The Crown S5? ^^
Everything in this film is perfect: the editing, the soundtrack, the performances, if all this were not enough, a script with a deep human history.
The Crown inspired me to watch this again.

Great films where studios took risks and trusted a Director's vision.
